Started in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained working.
