Your home course will seem like miniature golf after a round here. Quivira Golf Club

To the average golfer, the phrase “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” might not mean much, but for a lot of us it is the annual reminder that Golf Digest has done all the work in creating the ultimate bucket list. When you scroll this marvelous celebration of international designs and see the photos from No. 1 Newcastle, Northern Ireland, to No. 100 Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland, it’s impossible not to want to book a trip so you can cross one off.

However, for many of us, one might be it. With courses in Japan, Dubai, New Zealand, and many other exciting destinations, we must accept the fact that our budgets and schedules will make choosing a truly difficult task. But what if a course is located near a resort community that is an ideal destination for any type of vacation? That could certainly make it easier, if it means convincing the family, that special someone, or your best friends that you know just the place for the big getaway.

For me, that place was Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf and Spa Resort, a terrific property that is as luxurious as it is entertaining. It is also home to the No. 87 entry on Golf Digest’s 2022-23 list: Quivira Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus design that opened in 2014 and instantly became a dream course for players of all skill levels. Even having heard of its reputation, I wasn’t prepared for this masterpiece.

And things are only getting better here, as Nicklaus is working on a second course and he’s promising that it will be “stunning and equally as spectacular” as Quivira G.C. Is that even possible? I can’t imagine so, but I do know that no matter how wild his first design may be, it shouldn’t scare away the average golfer.

Prepare to Make a Day of It

A hole at Quivira Golf Club.
The epic, sweeping views here will make everyone play a little slower, so just enjoy the ride. Islands

Quivira Golf Club is as much an epic journey as it is a round of golf. This is a sprawling course with large gaps between holes, like the long ride between holes 4 and 5, 6 and 7, and especially 15 and 16, as those last two are set on the west side of the property like they’ve been shunned from the rest. I like to think Nicklaus left so much room over here so frustrated golfers can shout their profanities all at once without disturbing the local wildlife.

In all seriousness, though, the expansive layout is my favorite thing about QGC because it allows for magnificent views at every turn, and some of the holes even feel like they’re not even on the same course. I’ve heard other golfers say they want the most bang for their buck when they’re playing golf on vacations, and this one is worth every penny and then some. So, sit back and enjoy the ride… even if you’ve lost a dozen balls by the turn.

Don’t Sweat the Tough Stuff

The view from the tee box on the 13th hole at Quivira Golf Club.
Of all the holes here, golfers will talk about the 13th the most. Islands

No matter how good the player, this is not an easy course. In fact, I’d love to see a PGA event held here so we can all watch and marvel at how the pros would play it. But don’t let the challenge scare you away. The key for golfers of any skill level is to treat a round here like a vacation in general: leave the stress at home (or in the clubhouse) and just appreciate the opportunity to play one of the best courses in the world.

When you’re below average or a beginner, a difficult design can be a deterrent for continuing, so it is crucial not to let the lost balls bother you. And there will be a lot, especially when you’ll want to hit at least three shots on the Par 3 13th hole, with its breathtaking gap between the tee box and green. So, once you’ve stepping into that first tee box, take a deep breath, do a 360-degree twirl to take in the first sights, and repeat after me…

“It’s Time to Be Creative”

A golf hole at Quivira Golf club.
Nicklaus wasn’t brought in to make sure everyone breaks 90. Islands

Once I put the frustration in my rearview, I realized the best course of action is to spend a little more time examining the layout of each hole and finding ways to take advantage of the designs. You know, what good golfers do. Granted, there are plenty of obstacles you won’t be able to avoid and the curves run wild on many of these holes, but common sense might actually trump talent at Quivira.

For example, one of my favorite holes on the planet is the Par 4 5th, which the better golfers in my group Bryson’d to try and make the green in one. With a slower swing speed and a tendency to hit low runners for safer shots, I focused on sticking to the right side, keeping it on the fairway, and running it down the remarkable slope. A medium chip and two putts later, I had my only par of the round.

I more than earned my phenomenal paloma at the first course snack shack.

Shorten Your Game

The fairway view of the green on the 5th hole at Quivira Golf Club.
The sharp slope on the 5th hole allows golfers to hit shorter and run longer. Islands

While most of the rest of my game was lowlighted by double bogeys and replies of “I forget” when pressed for my actual score, I was at least able to keep the ball on the fairways by playing shorter. Three-quarter and half-swings might’ve put my ball well behind those of my cohorts, but nobody wants to hit out of the rough or sand here. Hell, the sand is at least manageable—I should know as I spent enough time there to use Shooter McGavin’s Hasselhoff joke multiple times.

The rough, though, is especially bad, and the stuff beyond that is no man’s land. Even very good golfers will be spotted kicking out of the thickness, so don’t be too hard on your buddies when you catch them picking a friendlier spot to hit from. Save the heavy roasting for when you catch them doing that tossed ball trick from a bunker.

Prepare to Storm the Shores

The beach view from the green of the 10th hole at Quivira Golf Club.
You can tell people that, like Brad Pitt, you spent a lot of time in the Cabo sand. Islands

At most courses I play during my travels, I’m usually teamed with strangers, which is awesome because I love having someone else’s perspective, not only for golf tips, but also seeing the courses through their eyes. But with my professional mindset, I’m too often caught up in the moment of enjoying the scenery, so I feel like a broken record when I say things like, “Can you believe this is real?” and “How amazing is this view?”

On this course, however, that’s all anyone in my group of eight said. The elevation allows for the best photo opportunities, so be prepared to take selfies and group pics on every tee and green. One element that people might miss without a proper heads up from the staff is that the sprawling beach that’s best seen from the green on the 10th hole is the spot where the battle for the Trojan beach was filmed for the movie Troy.

So, at the very least, you can tell people you’re the Achilles of scoring 110.

Vista Encantada
As stylish as it is relaxing, this resort has people buzzing for all the right reasons. Vista Encantada Spa Resort and Residences

When I felt the wave of relaxation first hit, I was cozied up on one of the daybeds lining Vista Encantada Spa Resort & Residences’ rooftop infinity pool, a margarita in one hand and a book in the other. The feeling snuck up on me so quickly, I wasn’t even quite sure what it was; after all, when was the last time I had even felt truly relaxed? Over the last few years, my mind has been convinced that a feeling of relaxation and escape is only attainable in some far-flung destination that’s a hassle to get to. It certainly wasn’t something I’d find at a resort in Los Cabos, one of Mexico’s most popular beach cities.

Yet there I was, at Vista Encantada—a family-friendly resort—experiencing a calmness devoid of any nagging anxiety or annoyances. I gazed across the sleek infinity pool, out toward the rocky coastline, and then traced the perfectly clear blue sky back to the white umbrella stretched out over my daybed. The verdict was in—relaxation was inevitable. But was it really? A sip from one of the best margaritas I’d had in recent memory confirmed my suspicions: Resistance was futile.

Vista Encantada opened in 2019 as an exclusive luxury boutique offering across from its sister properties, the 222-room Hacienda Encantada and the eight private villas of The Residences at Hacienda Encantada. Perched on a cliff, above all others, this 36-suite property offers uninterrupted views of the famous Cabo coastline and creates an environment that almost demands guests sit back, relax, and soak it all in.

Here’s how it gets the job done.

It feels like a personal vacation home

Vista Encantada villa
The elaborate décor adds a strong sense of luxury to the villa experience. Vista Encantada Spa Resort and Residences

Vista’s exceptionally spacious suites feature residential floor plans that range from 1,622-sq. ft. one-bedroom to 3,564-sq. ft. four-bedrooms with all the fixings. Rooms sport individual AC controls (a lifesaver for some), and home comforts and conveniences like full living rooms and kitchen, a washer/dryer room, and, in some units, a gorgeous master bath with a standalone soaking tub and dual-headed rainfall showerheads.

Off the bedrooms and living rooms, guests have their own private terrace with coastline ocean views. Most come with a full-size gas grill, and large plunge pool that can be transformed into a heated whirlpool at the touch of a button. Suites are designed with full privacy in mind, and it’s likely you’ll never hear (and you certainly won’t see) your neighbors, making it truly feel like your own place in the sun.

Superb service makes it easy to let go

The service at Vista Encantada sets a high bar and is a big reason relaxation comes so easily. From greeters to bellboys to your own private butler, you’ll be genuinely enthusiastically taken care of by people who know how to anticipate your needs and cater to your wants. Butlers do everything from arranging reservations and transportation to making sure your minibar is full of exactly what you want and escorting you to appointments. Anything you may need or want, you need not lift a finger (well, except to text your butler, that is).

Each suite has a dedicated butler who is on the clock around the clock. At any given time, butlers are only taking care of three to four rooms, giving the service an ultra-personal feel. Normally, having a butler stresses me out; I don’t like people doing things for me. However, my butler, Lu, was so warm and efficient, it didn’t take long for me to pony up the reins, knowing I was in her excellent hands. Going forward, her service will be hard to match.

The cocktails are an experience

cocktail
The mixologists work with guests to create cocktails that fit their preferences. Vista Encantada Spa Resort and Residences

Vista Encantada is hiding a secret—they have an incredible cocktail program. Mixologist Jessica a.k.a. Gin Reyes understands that a cocktail can elevate an experience and has designed the cocktail menus at Vista Encantada’s Atica Rooftop & Pool Bar, Mestizo del Mar restaurant, and CantoMar lobby bar with extra thought, often using local ingredients, spirits, and liqueurs. Infused tequilas, syrups, bitters, and several garnishes are made in-house and take these craft cocktails to the next level.

In CantoMar, trained mixologists whip up bespoke cocktails after asking guests a few questions (I was made a fantastic mezcal and charcoal cocktail with rose and lime) or roll out your new favorite version of a tried-and-true classic.

While by the pool, try the Vista Margarita, which contains Damiana (a local liqueur); it was a hands-down favorite among guests during my visit. Best of all, the all-inclusive plan covers top-shelf spirits which, again, help take the cocktail experience to the next level.

The spa features a grotto-style hydrotherapy circuit

Vista Encantada spa
It’s impossible not to find peace in this spa. Vista Encantada Spa Resort and Residences

Vista’s Milagro Spa is tucked away in the corner of the resort but shouldn’t be missed. Treatments include the usual body scrubs, wraps, and massages, as well as a few more-unique offerings such as the Mayan Ritual, a traditional Temazcal experience, and two hydrotherapy circuits, one inside and one outside (beneath a gorgeous brick-domed grotto that faces the ocean, to boot).

Similar to the rooftop pool, the outdoor hydrotherapy area has a distinct Mediterranean vibe that feels extra luxurious and adds to the resort’s overall feeling of escape and seclusion. Access to the hydrotherapy areas comes with any body treatment, but you can also book it on its own.

Stunning sunrise and sunset

pool
Morning, noon, or night, there’s no bad time of day to enjoy these views. Vista Encantada Spa Resort and Residences

Once again, the resort’s cliff top location wins it extra points. Cabo’s great weather means you can usually count on spectacular sunrise and sunset views from the resort. One evening, while dining at La Trajinera, the sunset was punctuated with a small fireworks show; another evening, at Barolo, the sunset was so saturated it seemed as though it had melted into the horizon, and even the hotel staff were pulling out their cameras for a capture.

Even with the best of intentions, I never made it up quite early enough to watch the sunrise from my east-facing terrace—a huge regret—but I can only imagine it was just as spectacular, if not more.

Exclusive spaces and clever design create a feeling of seclusion

The smart design of Vista Encantada plays a huge part in creating an environment primed for relaxation. Built on the cliff, either side of the boutique resort sports sprawling coastline views. However, most of the resort is built facing east, creating a limited view of your surroundings and a feeling of seclusion and intimacy. Because of Vista’s privileged location on the cliff, views are unobstructed, and the closest resorts are several stories below guests’ line of sight.

The positioning also blocks out any views of the neighboring Hacienda Encantada and The Residences (which are to the back of the building). The only time guests can see they are a part of a larger complex is through the floor-to-ceiling windows at Mestizo del Mar, but even then, the vantage point is elevated and feels exclusive.

The rooftop pool feels like your own slice of heaven

rooftop pool
The rooftop pool is an influencer’s dream come true. Vista Encantada Spa Resort and Residences

One of the more exclusive spaces at Vista Encantada is the rooftop pool. Aside from the gym, it’s the only space on the property that is strictly for Vista guests only. Resting high on the 7th floor, overlooking the cliffside, and featuring a collection of polished stone columns and arches, lounging here can feel almost untouchable.

Once again, Vista Encantada is playing with your sense of place, making you feel like you’re farther away than you actually are—and it makes all the difference. Surprisingly, even though the rooftop pool is family-friendly, it was never rowdy as kids—and adults—seemed to be on their best behavior.

You’ll get your pick of 16 different restaurants

One of the perks of having Hacienda Encantada in your backyard and being a sister property to yet another resort down by the Cabo Marina is that you’ll get to dine at their restaurants. All but two restaurants available to Vista guests are included in the all-inclusive plan. If you’re not all-inclusive, no sweat—you can just charge meals at these restaurants back to your room, easy peasy. All-in-all you’ll have 16 restaurants to choose from serving different iterations of seafood, steaks, Mexican, Italian, and Japanese cuisine, meaning there’s something for everyone and nary a bad meal in the house.

Standout spots include Vista’s signature restaurant, Mestizo del Mar, where the views almost surpass the menu; La Trajinera, a fine dining Mexican restaurant; and Los Riscos, a grillhouse with stunning cliffside sunset views. As a shameless shellfish lover, I beelined for Baja Lobster Company over at the marina, grabbed a seat outside overlooking the water, and indulged in a plate of plump raw oysters, some shrimp aguachile, and a couple of ice-cold Corona cheladas—all included in my plan.

Ample transportation makes it a cinch to get around

Along with rarely needing to lift a finger, guests at Vista Encantada barely have to lift a leg either, unless they want to. The intimate 36-room property has a compact and easy-to-navigate design covering just seven floors (three of which are just suites), while a seemingly endless string of golf carts provides transportation around the more expansive Hacienda Encantada side of the resort complex. Want to head down to the Cabo San Lucas marina? No problem, they’ve got you covered with free private shuttles for there and back between 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Private airport transport can also be arranged through the hotel.

Vista Encantada also offers free Wi-Fi, though the urge to check emails, social media, or the news cycle somehow doesn’t seem as important once you’re here. Here, atop a cliff overlooking Cabo’s famous rocky coastline, relaxation will find you, whether or not you even knew you were looking for it.

The magnificent cucumber margarita
The magnificent cucumber margarita is just one of the creative treats that guests will enjoy. Pueblo Bonito Golf and Spa Resorts

Have you really lived if you haven’t sipped a margarita in Mexico? The answer is no, no you have not. But you can make up for lost time in Los Cabos thanks to an agave-fueled offering at all five Pueblo Bonito Golf and Spa Resorts

The resort’s Margarita Mile package was created to spread the gospel of Mexico’s most famous cocktail by presenting it in five different iterations at Baja California Sur locales around Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos across the resort’s collection.

Serrano chiles, jalapeno, cucumber, and pineapple are among the ingredients used to give the classic margarita its own spin (while still being made with 100 percent blue agave tequila) at Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, the adults-only Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, Quivira Clubhouse, and Montecristo Estates. And if that doesn’t set the ground for a margarita-hopping tour, we’re not sure what does. Just be sure to have the concierge arrange a driver.

Guests are invited to learn more about tequila and its beneficial properties (including fighting cholesterol and aiding weight loss–who knew?) during tequila-tasting sessions with the resort’s catadores—tequila’s answer to sommeliers. You’ll learn how to judge different tequilas according to qualities like color, body, nose, flavor and finish. And you might even surprise yourself by discerning notes like mint, vanilla, and butterscotch among different producers.

The Margarita Mile package includes a three-night all-inclusive stay at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica or The Towers at Pacifica, with different inclusions (lime salt scrub and beach massage anyone?) at varying price points.

Quivira Los Cabos
It’s as if a sandcastle was built by on one of the world’s most beautiful stretches of sand, and guests definitely feel like royalty. Quivira Los Cabos

While eating breakfast at the Palomas Restaurant in Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos, it felt like I traveled back in time. With my back to the Sea of Cortez, I had a panoramic view of this stylish, Mediterranean-vibed resort’s outdoor amenities, and as I devoured the beyond-delicious Veracruz-styled eggs, I was overwhelmed by the sense of classic Cabo. It was as if a 1980s Spring Break movie was about to break out and a young Tom, Hanks or Cruise, would sprint by, hands full of bikini tops.

An hour later, I was on a Cabo Adventures catamaran, viewing this spectacular city from the water, which is a rite of passage for first-time visitors. Hanging a right at El Arco, passing an armada of snorkeling boats and yachts packed with wannabe influencers angling for just the right shots, I was treated to another glimpse into the past. This time it was the row of colorful cliffside mansions, each one more elaborate (some even a little gauche) than the next, that once served as second or third homes to icons like Sylvester Stallone, George Clooney, and even the notorious El Chapo. Today, the top draw is the controversial Dan Bilzerian. (We’re not sure if he’s the reason Cabo King Sammy Hagar moved to another neighborhood.)

But sailing a little further, I laid eyes on a magnificent sight, and a familiar one at that. It was The Towers at Pacifica, the “resort within a resort” at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf and Spa Resort. As luxurious as it is intimate, it represents the future of Los Cabos.

And the future is blindingly bright.

Far More than a Resort

Golf course
From the first tee to the 18th green—and especially holes 5 and 6—the Quivira Golf Club is one of the most Instagrammable courses in the world. Quivira Los Cabos

Getting the lay of the land at Quivira Los Cabos can be a little confusing. When the golf-focused travelers among us hear the name Quivira, we experience a Pavlovian response of packing our clubs and bursting through the wall like the Kool-Aid man to get to the airport as fast as humanly possible. That’s because the Quivira Golf Club is world renowned for being one of Jack Nicklaus’s greatest creations—a magnificent collection of 18 holes boasting stunning views, frustrating twists and turns, and the most delightful pit stops with palomas and snacks no mouth will ever forget.

But this is far more than just a golfer’s paradise. Quivira Los Cabos is a luxury resort residential community, which means it offers world class hotels and luxury estate lots, making it the kind of place people visit, fall madly in love with, and then never want to leave. Of course, being able to purchase property in this region is a tall order for many, so the great news is the planners and creative geniuses behind the curtain are constantly developing new ideas.

Quivira Coronado
Don’t mind the mess. How could you? Every family member and guest will be mesmerized by the views. Quivira Los Cabos

The thing about those golf views, though, is that they’re not just relegated to the Par 3 cliffside 13th hole or the Par 4 5th hole (that feels like it was created by children who love rolling down hills). Quivira currently boasts three residential communities—Copala, Coronado, and Novaspania—and just as the ocean provides breathtaking views on the coastal holes, the unique, stylish homes do the same everywhere else. And anyone teeing off right now will quickly learn that construction is well underway, with Alvar and Old Lighthouse Club slated to become the next headline makers.

To the homeowners go the spoils, there is no doubt, but this is a community that also knows how to make the resort guests feel like family.

The Ultimate in All of the Above

Quivira Los Cabos pool
Visitors will be elated with the sprawling pool and vast array of amenities at this adults-only resort. Quivira Los Cabos

Stepping inside The Market at Quivira for the first time, I could immediately tell why the residential lots sell like elote hot cakes. Inspired by European food halls, this retail and dining combo serves as an exclusive gathering place for anyone in need of a cocktail, snack, full meal, or decadent dessert. There’s even a sports bar for when the game cannot be missed. It’s like a bustling downtown scene organized in a compact setting, but without feeling small.

Now, if these were merely perks for homeowners, there would be no fun in spilling such secrets (unless it was an act of jealousy). Fortunately, this amenity is also open to guests of the resorts, which is obviously a huge selling point, even if this is a place that doesn’t really need to twist your arm.

Make no mistake about it, the resort experience puts an emphasis on adults-only luxury, romance, and excitement. It begins with Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf and Spa Resort, which exists almost as a Looney Tunes desert oasis mirage that can’t possibly be real. Only it most certainly is, and the most wayward wanderers will want to dive face-first into it over and over again. Set on a stretch of Cabo beach as if it is an A-list giant’s sandcastle, this resort is every couple’s dream come true, from bliss-seeking honeymooners to eternal soulmates who have lost track of how many years they’re celebrating.

Towers at Pacifica
The Towers at Pacifica operate with a concept of treating each guest with the utmost importance, and it delivers on every level. Quivira Los Cabos

Within minutes of checking in I heard the familiar cries of joy from young parents who left the little ones with grandma and papa for a few days, maybe even a week. Now, the Pacifica experience is incredible as-is; however, there’s another level of luxury here that might not be rivaled by any other resort in the region. The “resort within a resort,” The Towers at Pacifica are, to put it in a term every traveler understands, wow.

In addition to everything Pacifica already offers, guests of the Towers are spoiled beyond the boundary of mortal imagination by 24-hour butler service, which might invoke Big Brother vibes, but the staff is trained so well (by the British Butler Institute, no doubt) that by the second day, it’s like they’re finishing your thoughts. Cabo is famous for the sunsets, and the view from the VIP lounge is unparalleled. The same goes for the beachfront restaurant Peninsula and even the fitness center, which might not be at the top of anyone’s amenities list, but this one is so nice that it basically dares guests to squeeze in a workout.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach
Families will be thrilled with the space and variety at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. Quivira Los Cabos

Don’t get the wrong idea, though. This is a community for families, too. Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach is the kind of resort where the seeds are planted for second and third generations to make Cabo their vacation destination of choice. If the all-inclusive convenience and location don’t seal the deal, the amazing pools will. And the property is about as ideal as it gets for a home base of all-ages adventure, including swimming with dolphins, exploring the natural landmarks by catamaran, and playing golf, obviously.

But some families still won’t cap the price on privacy. For seclusion amid hosting special milestone events, or merely quality time with loved ones, Pueblo Bonito Montecristo Estates boasts three-bedroom villas in a gated community, in addition to private infinity pools, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and butler service. Booker beware, though: this experience is guaranteed to make guests want to consider investing in a lot of their own.

The Future is Fantastic

old lighthouse
There’s plenty of work to be done, sure, but that just means so much more excitement is in store. Quivira Los Cabos

What could possibly make Quivira any better than it already is? Creativity and foresight, of course. The latter being the common-sense realization that more people will want in on this otherworldly resort community and therefore the former means coming up with new ways to keep everyone entertained. The aforementioned Alvar and Old Lighthouse Club neighborhoods are merely the tip of the sand dunes (or perhaps the honey on top of the Roasted Pineapple cocktail at the Refresca Tequila Bar) when it comes to living here.

Both residents and guests—perhaps of the soon-to-open St. Regis at Quivira’s 120 suites—will want a cabana at the Quivira Beach Club when the red carpet finally rolls out, and afternoons will be made of chasing the La Choya Wandering Kitchen around the entire community for the sake of devouring its surprise treats. Families will love the sense of peace and educational lessons found in the Amakiri Botanical Garden, and while the gym will satisfy any fitness nut, there’s nothing quite like grabbing a bike and hitting the trails.

Hole 13 in Quivira Los Cabos
Golfers of all skill levels have undoubtedly cursed Jack Nicklaus for the cliffside green on Hole 13, but can he top the coolness of this design? Quivira Los Cabos

And it’s important to repeat that Quivira isn’t simply a golf destination, but a second Jack Nicklaus Signature Course will undeniably put this in the top echelon of vacation choices for everyone from Sunday slicers to some of the PGA’s greatest legends. Groundbreaking won’t take place until later this year, and it’ll be a while before the first foursome is ready to tee off.

But that just means we’ll all have a little more time to appreciate this Los Cabos renaissance and the incredible role Quivira is playing in ensuring this golden age will never end.

Mexico
Mexico’s best beach towns feature some incredible Airbnb rentals that make for great vacation settings, like this luxurious property geared toward larger groups. Airbnb

Endless sun, tacos at every meal, jungles to explore, and mountains framing epic sunset views are just the beginning of Mexico’s endless appeal—and we can never get enough. Looking for a little more privacy and exclusivity? Head off the beaten path a bit on your next trip and book an Airbnb rental.

Most on our list come with their own private pools and some even include private chefs, but all of them guarantee an amazing time. From Cancun to Puerto Vallarta, here are our picks on where to relax and recharge on your next Mexico escape.

Surfer Style—Sayulita

Sayulita
This is a great spot if your goal is to hang ten without sharing waves with too many people. Airbnb

Surf chic located steps from the water, Casa Playa—a three-bedroom bungalow in Sayulita on Mexico’s Pacific Coast—is barefoot luxury at its finest. Accordion glass doors open to connect the bedrooms and living areas to the outdoors, ushering in the sounds and smell of the sea.

We especially love that this home offers room service from of the nearby Don Pedros Restaurant, which boasts a varied menu that includes a mix of flavor, including octopus carpaccio, spicy tuna sashimi tostadas, and Mexican pizza with chorizo, chiles, and black beans.

Castle on the Beach—Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres
Everyone wants to live like royalty on vacation, so why not stay in your own castle? Airbnb

We love Casa Alkimia, a four-bedroom castle on Isla Mujeres, which is a 15-minute ferry ride from Cancun. The towering home has a Moroccan vibe, with bright white walls and lots of curves; inside, the style leans toward nature and neutrals, with basket lamps and raw wood railings. We’re especially taken with the rooftop lounge where you can take in 360-degree views while soaking in the private plunge pool.

Art Lover’s Dream—Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta
Style takes on a new meaning in this spectacular Puerto Vallarta rental. Airbnb

Mexican artist Sergio Bustamente created the paintings and sculptures in this three-bedroom sprawling retreat in Puerto Vallarta on the west coast. Book this home for the delights and surprises, including the palapa-covered outdoor living area, the wall of tiny sculptures catching dreams above one of the beds, and the balcony opening to a jungle of palm trees leading to the water.

Rooftop Pad—Tulum

Tulum
Enjoy views for days from this rooftop setting that will make you wish you were staying for weeks. Airbnb

It’s almost a shame that the interior of this Tulum gem is so lovely—including the raw-edge dining room table for eight in the open-floor plan modern main level—because you’ll likely spend most of your time on the rooftop hangout space. Surrounded by palm trees and rainforest, this space has a private, hidden gem feel.

Up on the roof level, there’s plenty of room to spread out on the day bed, outdoor dining table, and the pool. What’s more, the host works with a concierge team that includes a chef and driver for a truly five-star, pampered experience. Also of note: We like that this three-bedroom home is in a gated community.

Treehouse Charmer—Puerto Vallarta

tree house resort
As kids we dream of having an amazing tree house, and adults we dream of vacation luxury. This is the best of both worlds. Airbnb

Open-air living meets modern vibes in this Puerto Vallarta four-bedroom hideaway. While there aren’t ocean views, this home does boast a sweeping deck set higher up, making the whole place feel like a treehouse. Plus, that deck sports a pool and a collection of sun loungers with partial shade thanks to the gumbo limbo tree anchoring the space.

Inside, find pops of character and color, from the bright, bold paintings to the collection of carved wooden masks.

Big Group Luxury—Isla Mujeres

Casa Isla Bajo villa
The more the merrier at this spacious property that feels like a miniature resort. Airbnb

The six-bedroom Casa Isla Bajo villa on Isla Mujeres caters to groups—literally. The in-house chef reaches out weeks ahead of your stay to plan menus based on your preferences, whether those be for light fare like just-caught fish or Mexican comfort foods like enchiladas. With meals taken care of, guests have more time to enjoy the pool, set steps from the water; take a plunge with a margarita while enjoying sea views.

Open Air Relaxation—Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo
Take a deep breath and appreciate the connection with nature here. Airbnb

We love how seamlessly the hacienda-style Villa Noche transitions to the outdoor living space—and right onto the beach. Part of the Las Palmas Luxury Villas boutique hotel, this villa has access to extra amenities, including several pools, a restaurant and a spread of lounge chairs and day beds on the sand.

Jungle Mansion—Cozumel

Cozumel
Spend the day exploring all that Cozumel has to offer, and then wind down at night in the pool or jacuzzi. Airbnb

This 5-bedroom private villa gets rave reviews for its lush outdoor patio—with pool and Jacuzzi—where curling vines, palms and planters pack the space with tropical greenery. Inside, the vibe is boho-eclectic, mixing Frida Kahlo murals with street signs, candelabras, chandeliers, oversize paintings and more for a collected, maximalist feel.

Modern and Simple—Todos Santos

Todos Santos
No, there’s no such thing as too many selfies and Instagram Reels at this fascinating concrete beach home. Airbnb

A departure from most beach homes, this modern, concrete two-bedroom space boasts a clean, minimalist design, lots of light, and thoughtful touches. It’s set in the town of Todos Santos on the Baja Peninsula, located about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas with a beach popular as much for surfing as it is sea turtle nests.

A luxury resort-style horizon pool by the ocean.
Pools, beaches, views for days—Los Cabos is certainly one of the most amazing destinations in Mexico, and resorts like Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort are part of the reason. Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort

Very few vacation spots offer such an incredible bounty of resorts—from world-class luxury enclaves to lively all-inclusive properties—as Los Cabos, one of Mexico’s premier destinations known for its ample sunshine and dramatic desert-meets-sea beauty. Since the late 1990s, this tourist mecca at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, has lured travelers with its stunning architecture, impeccably manicured golf courses, excellent deep-sea fishing and whale watching, and immersive spa experiences.

Its reputation as a favorite escape of Hollywood celebrities is legend and continued development has added several impressive new properties to the mix in recent years, both in vibrant Cabo San Lucas and quieter San José del Cabo, as well as along the 20-mile corridor that separates them. Here’s a look at 10 of the best resorts in Los Cabos.

Esperanza

The Esperanza resort by the beach.
Want to talk about views? The beach here makes an incredible setting for any type of stay. Esperanza

Esperanza, an Auberge Resorts Collection property set on a gorgeous private beach where waves crash against dramatic rocks and surround guests with the rhythms of the sea, has been welcoming couples and families since 2002. While not ideal for swimming, the beach and ocean here can be enjoyed from sunrise to sunset from the two-tiered oceanfront infinity pool, palapa-style dining venues and the terraces of some of the resort’s casitas, suites and villas.

All 102 accommodations are decorated in a casually luxurious hacienda style, including generously sized Casitas (925 sq. ft.) and Suites (1,200 to 2,000 sq. ft.) offering indoor-outdoor living, with some featuring a hot tub on the terrace, and two-and-three-bedroom Oceanfront Villas (2,000 to 3,000 sq. ft.) that feature a private pool and are ideal for families or groups of friends.

Since its debut, Esperanza has embraced an eco-centric philosophy, with four restaurants dedicated to sourcing local, organic and sustainable ingredients and a spa centered around the healing properties of indigenous plants.

Esperanza is located just outside Cabo San Lucas near Punta Ballena.

Grand Velas Los Cabos

Each of the 307 suites at Grand Velas Los Cabos, an upscale, family-friendly all-inclusive open since 2016, offers at least 1,100 sq. ft. of space and a sweeping ocean view thanks to the property’s striking tiered architecture. Suites are awash in beachy neutrals and pale blues, with contemporary décor, large terraces, and spa-inspired bathrooms. Gran Velas resorts are known for their excellent dining venues and this property offers guests seven all-inclusive options.

Among them are Azul, for al fresco breakfast, lunch and dinner; Cabrilla for fresh seafood and ceviche; Piaf for French cuisine; Frida for contemporary Mexican dishes; and Cocina de Autor for multi-course gastronomy. There’s also a 35,000 sq. ft. SE Spa featuring a seven-step water ceremony that’s included in every treatment as well as multi-tiered oceanfront infinity pools (the sea here has a strong undertow and isn’t swimmable) as well as separate kids and teens clubs with their own pool and splash area.

Grand Velas Los Cabos is located along the corridor, about halfway between San José del Cabo and Cabos San Lucas.

Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort

A luxury resort-style pool overlooking the ocean.
It’s a marvelous feat when a resort manages to offer both family-friendly and romantic settings, as if it is two properties in one. Hilton Los Cabos does this with aplomb. Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort

Fresh from a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2019 and set on one of Los Cabos’s truly swimmable beaches, the 268-room Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort, which opened in 2000, attracts both couples and families with its combination of beachfront fun and traditional-meets-contemporary Mexican decor.

The new Enclave Beach Club, set on serene Tequila Cove, transforms from daytime activity zone to an evening cocktail venue with music and fire pits. Four pools—Serenity for adults ages 21 and older, Jewel with its fun swim-up bar, Dolphin for families (complete with a waterslide), and Sunrise for a quieter vibe—suit a variety of vacation styles. The resort’s six dining venues include Vela, serving Mediterranean; Talavera, offering Mexican specialties from seven regions; Mio, for sushi and raw bar; and Enclave for tapas—plus the Sotol tequileria offers tastes of 200-plus varieties of tequila.

Rooms are 546 sq. ft. with a king or two queen beds, while suites range from 619 to 4,460 sq. ft., with the 664 sq. ft. Altamar Plunge Pool Suite ideal for a romantic escape. There’s also a 7,000 sq. ft. Eforea Spa.

The Hilton Los Cabos is located in the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

Montage Los Cabos

Comprised of contemporary low-rise buildings set on 39 acres around tranquil Santa Maria Bay, Montage Los Cabos, which opened in May 2018, offers secluded, understated luxury in 122 rooms and suites as well as 52 privately owned Montage Residences. The beach is swimmable, but there are also three cabana-lined pools and the Paintbox children’s program (for ages 5-12) offers half- and full-day creative activities for an additional fee, making Montage an option for families seeking an upscale escape.

Accommodations, all featuring sleek décor in neutral hues, include coastal and ocean view rooms (895 sq. ft.), coastal and ocean view one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites (1,645 to 3,595 sq. ft.) and an array of residences with two to five bedrooms. The resort’s restaurants are Mezcal (for modern Mexican), Marea (casual seaside menu for lunch and more formal steak and seafood for dinner), and Talay (a pop-up eatery serving Thai specialties in a night market setting). The serene Spa Montage specializes in treatments inspired by traditional Mexican “Tree of Life” folklore.

Montage Los Cabos is located on the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

One&Only Palmilla

A luxury resort style pool by the ocean and a lit up pagoda.
There’s a lot of history at this One&Only property, but it’s still as modern and sophisticated as anyone could imagine. One&Only Palmilla

One&Only Palmilla, one of Los Cabos premier luxury resorts, opened in 2004 and is known for its bold traditional-meets-modern Mexican design, charming hilltop wedding chapel and an ambience that channels a serene and authentic Baja spirit. Interestingly, the property was originally home to the area’s first resort, a 15-room luxury hideaway built in the 1950s.

One&Only Palmilla’s 174 oceanfront accommodations, all with impeccable décor, include Rooms, Premier Rooms and Palmilla Rooms (600 to 700 sq. ft.), Junior Suites (770 sq. ft., some with a private plunge pool), One-Bedroom Suites (1,150 to 1,470 sq. ft.) and One-Bedroom Casita Suites (2,100 sq. ft.). The free-form Agua Pool overlooks one of Los Cabos’ most dramatic beaches and is a showstopper. There is also an adults-only Vista Pool and a private beach cove with floating day beds and overwater hammocks.

Culinary wise, One&Only Palmilla offers four restaurants: Agua, a cliffside eatery specializing in seasonal Baja seafood; Suviche, offering Japanese fusion with a Mexican twist; Seared by One&Only, with menus by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten; and Breeze for al fresco all-day poolside dining. The One&Only Spa, set amid a blooming garden, is centered around authentic Mexican wellness and healing rituals.

The resort is located close to San José del Cabo.

Pueblo Bonito Pacifica

Pueblo Bonito Pacifica
Pool or beach? Here, guests will be challenged to spend equal time at both, since both settings are as desirable as it gets. Pueblo Bonito Pacifica

An adults-only all-inclusive resort—one of four Pueblo Bonito resorts in Los Cabos—with a tranquil vibe, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica opened in 2005 within the Quivira development of Cabo San Lucas and added the more luxurious The Towers at Pacifica in 2016. In the original 154 rooms and suites, décor reflects the resort’s Zen-inspired architecture and cacti-studded landscape with minimalist lines, teak wood furnishings and neutral hues, while the 47 rooms and suites in The Towers have a more contemporary organic feel.

The Towers also features Towers Pool Suites with private plunge pools and a 3,233 sq. ft. Presidential Suite. Pacifica offers a wide array of dining choices, both at its onsite restaurants (which include Peninsula for traditional Baja favorites and Pescados for sushi) and at the three other Pueblo Bonito Pacifica resorts in Los Cabos, where guests can reserve tables and hop a shuttle to dine around, including at the atmospheric LaFrida at the Sunset Beach property.

The resort’s expansive pool overlooks a dramatic stretch of beach (where daybeds are comfy hideaways but rough surf prohibits swimming) and golf, beach yoga and pampering at the Armonia Spa are all popular activities.

Pueblo Bonito Pacifica is located just outside of Cabo San Lucas.

Marquis Los Cabos

An infinity horizon pool by lounge chairs.
An infinity pool is always nice, but this one offers an otherworldly appeal. Marquis Los Cabos

Open since 2003 and offering 209 suites and 25 casitas, Marquis Los Cabos is an all-inclusive adults-only resort with a welcoming vibe. Chilling by the large beachfront infinity pools is the focus here since the undertow in the ocean can be strong, but the resort’s sweeping views and spacious accommodations appeal to couples and groups of friends seeking a sophisticated and relaxing all-inclusive experience that’s also fun. Guests are greeted by a dramatic arched lobby offering a panorama of the Sea of Cortez. The same view can be enjoyed from the ocean-facing suites (650 sq. ft.) and the beachfront casitas (670 square feet) with private plunge pools), all featuring a mix of traditional and contemporary Mexican décor.

Master Suites are 1,420 sq. ft. and feature plunge pools while the Two Bedroom Presidential Suite, at 2,604 sq. ft., boasts expansive top-floor terraces. The resort has four restaurants for all-inclusive dining (Pergola for Mediterranean/Italian, Dos Mares for coastal-inspired seafood, Sakke for Asian specialties and Vista Ballenas for international menus) as well as Canto Del Mar for a four-course French-inspired tasting menu at an added fee. There is also a 13,000 sq. ft. Spa Marquis.

The resort is located on the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

Viceroy Los Cabos

Viceroy Los Cabos, which opened in 2018, has an architecturally unique, ultra-modern design featuring elevated walkways surrounded by water features, creating a spare and tranquil oasis where the focus is on the vivid blue sea and blazing sunsets that captivate guests as clear Baja days transition to starry nights.

The 192 hotel rooms and 50 residences, awash in pure white and medium wood tones, include 575-square-foot Rooms, 1,000 sq. ft. Junior Suites, 1,200 sq. ft. one-bedroom suites and three-to-five-bedroom Casitas and Villas. There are five pools, including ones designated as adult-only and family-friendly, as well as five restaurants and lounges. Nido, specializing in sushi and ceviche, is set inside a captivating nest-like structure that seems to float atop water, while the rooftop Cielomar serves up panoramic views along with fresh seafood, flame-grilled entrees and wood-fired pizzas.

The 11,000-sq. ft. spa is a mood-lit enclave with signature vitality pools and thermal rooms.

Viceroy Los Cabos is located just outside of San José del Cabo.

Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort

An arrangement of lounge chairs around a lounge pool.
Couples will absolutely love this romantic setting, as it is ideal for destination weddings, honeymoons, and anniversary celebrations for years to come. Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort

One of Los Cabos’ most luxurious and atmospheric resorts since its opening in 1997, Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort exemplifies upscale romance—its name means “the windows to paradise” after all—with an unapologetically seductive ambience centered around a landscape of soothing white architecture, serpentine pools and glowing lights.

Offering 84 suites (from 960 to 3,900 sq. ft.) and villas (3,900 to 7,800 sq. ft.) decorated with examples of local Mexican craftsmanship and artistry that include hand-carved headboards, enchanting quilts and wood-beamed ceilings, the resort is known for pampering guests with both immersive decor and attentive service.

Dining venues include Arbol for seafood with an Asian-Indian inspiration, Alebrije for Oaxacan-inspired gastronomy and Sea Grill for fresh local seafood and Mexican specialties. The resort’s Tequila & Ceviche Bar also offers casual light fare beneath a charming palapa. The main Beach Pool faces the sea and features a swim-up bar, while the Oasis Pool & Lazy River caters to families with kids. The Spa at Las Ventanas offers a Four Elements menu inspired by earth, air, fire and water.

Las Ventanas al Paraiso is located in the corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

Formerly known as The Resort at Pedregal and opened in 2009 as Capella Pedregal, this intimate and dramatic property has been the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal since late 2019. It is located on 24 acres and each of its 115 rooms, suites, villas and casitas has an ocean view and private plunge pool.

These spacious accommodations—all featuring traditional Mexican décor such as wood-beamed ceilings, decorative headboards and Baja-style throws, include Oceanview Plunge Pool King Bedrooms (856 sq. ft.), Dos Mares Junior Suites (1,410 sq. ft.), Oceanview One-Bedroom Plunge Pool Suites (1,600 sq. ft.), Oceanview Villas (2,685 sq. ft.) and a range of other expansive villas, casitas and private residences.

Guests can relax at two beachfront infinity pools and enjoy four restaurants, including the ultra-romantic cliffside El Farallon for fresh local seafood and the signature Don Manuel’s for hacienda-style dining featuring fresh local ingredients. The resort’s Waldorf Astoria Spa—Luna y Mar features treatments based on the phases of the moon.
