Can’t make it to the famed Soggy Dollar Bar in the British Virgin Islands to enjoy a true Painkiller drink? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Our Painkiller recipe comes straight from the Soggy Dollar Bar on the island of Jost Van Dyke so you can make your own, true-as-it-gets Painkiller to relax in a hammock on your front porch or perhaps sunbathing poolside.

It’s a bright drink with vibrant fruit flavors and colors that’s meant to be celebrated and consumed on a hot, sunny day. Don’t worry: The convenience of concocting these cocktails from home means you have the option of either staying dry or getting in the spirit of Soggy Dollar Beach by getting wet. Then, you can find your in-home bartender and pay with a soggy dollar bill, as the namesake bar suggests.

Where did the Painkiller originate?

As the name suggests, the Soggy Dollar Bar earned its keep from patrons who would swim to the bar and pay with soggy bills. They did so on the island of Jost Van Dyke, an island with a population smaller than 400 people. The Soggy Dollar Bar, however, is not just there to accommodate guests who want to enjoy a Painkiller after a relaxing day in the water; there’s also food.

Try everything from filet mignon kabobs, Soggy’s famous conch fritters, coconut shrimp, crab cakes and lobster rolls, among many other items — and those are just some of the appetizers.

Want to take a piece of the island home with you? Check out the Soggy Dollar’s boutique. Not able to make it out to the BVIs? You can shop their goods, including Soggy Dollar Rum, online, too.

Optional Ingredient:

Is that mango rum? Yes it is. To each his or her own.

The most important step: Enjoy your Painkiller drink in a hammock, preferably alongside a fellow Caribbean beach bum. Does the resulting painkiller drink actually kill pain or increase it? That’s up to you.

Mai Tai Drink Recipe https://www.islands.com/mai-tai-drink-recipe/ Fri, 30 Mar 2018 03:50:50 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=40986 Learn how to make this iconic cocktail, made popular by The Royal Hawaiian hotel on Oahu.

The post Mai Tai Drink Recipe appeared first on Islands.

]]>
There’s some debate about who invented the first Mai Tai. Victor J. Bergeron, aka Trader Vic and founder of the tiki bar of the same name, claims to have invented the rum cocktail in 1944. He made the drink for his friends from Tahiti, who were visiting his original outpost in Oakland, California. As the story goes, after tasting his concoction, one of his friends said, “Maita’i roa ae,” which translates to “the best,” and the name Mai Tai was born. Don the Beachcomber disputes this invention, arguing that the Mai Tai is based on his own libation, the Q.B. Cooler, invented in 1933.

The Mai Tai became associated with Hawaii when it was served by Oahu’s iconic “Pink Palace,” The Royal Hawaiian. Bergeron was hired to create the hotel’s drink menu, and he made a new version of the Mai Tai to appeal to visitors who wanted to sip fruity cocktails on the beach. (We can relate.) It became so popular, it was featured in the Elvis movie Blue Hawaii, and it was said to be one of President Nixon’s favorite drinks. So get your tiki bar stocked and ready: Here’s how to make a Mai Tai at home.

The best way to keep warm on chilly winter nights? Hot buttered rum, of course.

The history of the drink dates back to Colonial New England, when Jamaica began importing molasses to the United States. People started adding rum to their hot beverages, and hot buttered rum was created.

It’s delicious, easy to make and it will warm you right up on the coldest of January nights. And in case you need an excuse to imbibe, January 17 is National Hot Buttered Rum Day.

Hot Buttered Rum Recipe

Serves about 16

  • ¾ lb softened butter
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • salt
  • aged rum

Instructions:

Beat butter and sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and a pinch of salt and beat again to combine. Chill buttered rum base until ready to use, up to two weeks.

To make 1 serving of hot buttered rum, put 1 heaping tbsp. of the buttered rum base and 1 oz. of aged rum into a mug. Fill with boiling water. Stir to melt and mix; serve at once.
