For an easy beach vacation, it’s hard to beat Cancun. Direct flights are offered from several major U.S. cities, plus the destination won’t break the bank. The nicest stretch of beach (complete with the translucent Caribbean water straight from a postcard) is found in the Hotel Zone area, which is lined with all-inclusive resorts and luxury properties.
If the latter is what you’re after, check in to the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, which recently completed a $40 million renovation. We checked out the new updates, and here’s what we loved about the hotel.
Renovated Rooms
You can’t go wrong with any of the 447 rooms and suites, since each features a private balcony with an ocean view. And now the digs have been revamped to complement the surroundings.
The redesign, helmed by Martha Gaos and Claudia Gonzalez of G+G Interiorismo, incorporates elements of local culture. Wooden accents feature intricate carvings of native symbols including hummingbirds (sacred in Mayan mythology), quetzals (local birds), flowers and other symbols found in Mexican folk art.
Bathrooms also got a makeover, with dual sinks, an oversized soaking tub and a chic rain shower — and this one actually feels like you’re standing in the pouring rain, thanks to the water pressure.

New 150 Margaritas Menu
When in Cancun, a margarita is a must. And while your stay probably won’t be long enough to try all 150 specialty margaritas on the updated menu at the lobby bar, you have to sample at least a few.
Ranging from classic (strawberry lime) to modern (prosecco) to fusion (hibiscus) to exotic (Serrano pepper), you’re sure to find a ’rita to suit your taste. Bonus: each is made with premium tequila, like Casa Dragones and Herradura.
Beach and Pools
With a prime location along Cancun’s Hotel Zone, the resort’s beach is one of the nicest you’ll find in the area. The property also features two gorgeous pools: one a beachfront adults-only infinity pool, and a sprawling family-friendly pool.
There are plenty of lounge chairs to go around, but we recommend booking a shaded Bali daybed overlooking the Caribbean for the day. For the full VIP experience, order a beach brunch basket with gourmet-picnic treats like champagne, sandwiches, chips and guac, and charcuterie.
Four-Hands Dinner
The resort has also launched a monthly “Four-Hands Dinner” concept where two chefs design a multi-course meal based on a theme. (Our seven-course meal was inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins.)
Each course is paired with wines curated by the staff sommelier, including a few local Mexican varietals. This collaboration dinner can also be booked as a private dining option for groups.
The Spa
If you need a break from the sun, the property features a two-level 35,000 square-foot spa. Cool off in the indoor pool with views of Cancun’s Nichupte Lagoon before your appointment.
Opt for a Mayan-inspired treatment, like the Ichtaca Mayan, which starts with a relaxation ritual, followed by an herbal body scrub and traditional Mayan massage.
