Who knows when we’ll see James Bond on the big screen again? With Daniel Craig having hanged up his tuxedo for the final time following the very permanent ending of No Time to Die, we’re still no closer to learning which actor will fill his form-fitting tactical shirts than we were several years ago when oddsmakers were giving the role to Idris Elba and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, as well as the Toms, both Hiddleston and Hardy. And with Warner Bros. giving Henry Cavill a little extra free time, a lot of people are praying he trades his cape for an Aston Martin.

There’s always another alternative to watching the movies, though, and that is living the James Bond experience. After all, the film franchise has taken 007 all over the world, to some of the most beautiful destinations, and we should be thrilled to follow in his footsteps. However, planning such trips takes a lot of effort, so we’d need some experts to step in and make it a little more convenient.

Enter: Black Tomato. The luxury travel concept has partnered with Eon Productions to create the most authentic 007 experiences—of course without the whole saving the world aspect. Instead, fans can book itineraries that will not only take them to some of the most memorable, luxurious filming locations, but also allow them to safely participate in their own action scenes.

For example, travelers who want to get their pulses racing can spend time learning moves from Daniel Craig’s stunt double, racing an Aston Martin at Casino Royale filming location Millbrook Proving Ground, and hitting the Thames on a Sunseeker Superhawk 34, which was featured in the opening of The World is Not Enough.

Experiences include making the one and only Vesper Martini and exploring the River Thames by speed boat. Rick Barrett/Hugo Sousa

Anyone who’d rather drink like Bond will be especially excited to do the impossible: drink the legendary Vesper Martini. This has been an impossible feat considering the key ingredient, Kina Lillet, was discontinued long ago. Sure, there have been replacements and substitutions, but for the real thing, this opportunity to take a martini masterclass means guests will be among the last people to ever try the real deal Vesper. They’ll also tour the Champagne Bollinger Chateau and Estate, sampling Bond’s preferred La Grand Année vintage in the process, and top it all off with a candlelit dinner in a Murano glass factory, where keen observers will spot the Coppa Barovier from Moonraker.

Obviously, style also plays a huge role in the Bond experience, so a bespoke suit fitting will take place in St. James, before fans head to Lake Como to tour some private villas and then Venice’s Torre dell’Orologio clocktower, which was also featured in Moonraker. Finally, the accommodations speak for themselves, as travelers will be staying at Das CentralVilla PassalacquaBelmond Hotel Cipriani, and The Corinthia.

This is but a taste of the Black Tomato Bond experience, as fans can book any number of experiences. There’s even a chance to meet Bond Girl and actress Carole Ashby, who will share her personal, behind-the-scenes stories from Octopussy and A View to a Kill.

‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Will Be Filmed in Thailand, So Let’s Look at the Possible Resorts https://www.islands.com/resorts/white-lotus-season-three-filming-locations/ Tue, 28 Mar 2023 20:08:01 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=46705 Mike White loves Four Seasons properties and now the showrunner has four to choose from.

Choosing between Thailand’s incredible Four Seasons properties will be tough. Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

The speculation is finally over. After months of travel experts trying to guess where the third season of HBO’s smash hit series The White Lotus will be filmed, Variety has learned that the answer is Thailand. This probably isn’t much of a surprise, given the fact that we knew the show’s creator, Mike White, was eyeing Asia and there are only so many settings that could handle this kind of production, especially in terms of finding accommodations for the cast and crew.

Some people were certain that White would choose the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, so much so that Japan has already been heating up as the “place to be,” albeit not nearly as hot as Taormina and other parts of Sicily, where the second season was filmed. (Of course, I should also point out that the first season’s filming location, the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, is always a crowd favorite.)

White previously suggested the next season “would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality,” and he has reportedly been recently scouting locations in Thailand. Given his preference for Four Seasons properties—and who could blame him—he has four to choose from in the Land of Smiles, so let’s do our own scouting and pick the most attractive and luxurious accommodations from each.

Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River

A view of the city and river from Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River in Thailand.
This resort is a hub for any travelers seeking to enjoy the city’s rich food, art, culture, and history. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River

If White and Co. want a stylish, sophisticated setting with Bangkok’s phenomenal art scene as the backdrop, this is the place. Exploring the capital city by river is a must for any first-time visitors, as it is also known as the “Venice of the East.” Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River can organize two-hour longtail boat tours, offering guests the best views imaginable, up to and including a stop at Wat Arun. That’s just one of many immersive cultural tours available, in addition to visits to the Grand Palace and Ayutthaya, among other locations.

Of the various rooms and suites, guests will clamor for those offering river views, but the most fabulous of them all is the Riverfront Penthouse. With room for as many as nine guests, this three-bedroom Presidential Suite will feel like its own property, allowing visitors to spend an entire day simply appreciating the cityscape from the terrace or private pool.

Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai

An aerial view of the emerald rice patties at the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai in Thailand.
There might not be a better resort in the region for rest and rejuvenation. Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai

If you’re visiting Thailand for the city life, art, history, and culture, Bangkok is a great choice. However, if your goal is otherworldly wellness and relaxation, it’s time to book a pavilion or multi-bedroom residence at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. This property hosts private retreats that spoil guests with a personal live-in attendant, while providing myriad amenities and activities that will make each family or group feel like the only people at the resort.

Encouraging guests to “live life in a balance,” the resort’s various experts host experiences for the rejuvenation and renewal of the mind, body, and soul. Yoga, restorative healing, clean eating, holistic well-being—there’s a class or activity for whatever travelers are seeking. It’s a shame Tanya McQuoid won’t be around to experience it. (Or will she?!?!)

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

A view from the infinity pool at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui in Thailand.
The crew will certainly enjoy taking a break next to this awesome pool. Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

When the setting calls for beautiful beaches, a stunning infinity pool, and rooms that are as luxurious as they are authentic in décor, Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is the ideal filming location. In fact, if I was a betting man, this would be my pick, but let’s just daydream until White decides. And dreaming is an easy task when you look at the marvelous multi-bedroom residence villas with their private pools and butlers, as well as all the space an extended family—or TV series cast—could ever want.

Nature lovers and adventurous souls will also fall head over heels for Koh Samui and the neighboring areas thanks to the thrilling experiences offered by this resort. For starters, even novice divers have probably heard of Sail Rock, one of the most beautiful diving spots in the world, and guests can take private excursions to explore. A private yacht, “Minor Affair,” is also available for excursions to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Angthong Marine National Park.

Four Seasons Tented Camp, Golden Triangle

One of the tent experiences at the Four Seasons Tented Camp, Golden Triangle, in Thailand.
Adventure awaits at this luxurious campground set against the beautiful jungle. Four Seasons Tented Camp, Golden Triangle

This is certainly the most creative choice, as the resort’s luxurious tents are a world apart from the majestic suites at San Domenico Palace. It is also probably the most far-fetched, but it would be an undoubtedly fascinating setting.

Surrounded by lush forestry and not far from the borders of Myanmar and Laos, this is possibly one of the most incredible glamping experiences in the world, as guests of the Four Seasons Tented Camp can get up close with rescued elephants, fish with locals, or explore the culture and temples of Chiang Rai. Or, for those travelers who want every aspect of a vacation to be exclusive, the resort’s concierge team will bend over backwards to fulfill almost any dreams—within reason, of course.
As for the tents, there are three styles to choose from: Deluxe, Superior River-View, and Superior. Each sleeps up to three guests, and while children are welcome, they must be at least 10 years old. The Explorer’s Lodge is also an excellent choice for a family, as it sleeps up to six guests and boasts a private infinity pool. It would be hard to stir up drama in such an unbelievable location, but we’re sure the writers could come up with something.

The Crown and Anchor from ‘Ted Lasso’ is about to Be Available on Airbnb https://www.islands.com/europe-mediterranean/ted-lasso-crown-anchor-airbnb/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 19:19:48 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=46649 A very exclusive selection of Greyhound fans can stay in the friendliest pub in Richmond.

When it comes to the chaotic obsessions of sports fandom, the more irrational among us will travel all over the world to cheer on our favorite teams. But just how far are we willing to go for a team that doesn’t actually exist? That’s what fans of Apple TV+’s hit series Ted Lasso will spend the next week asking themselves, as AFC Richmond faithful everywhere wait patiently for Airbnb’s coolest listing to go live.

On Tuesday, March 21, at 1 PM ET, booking will open for travelers to stay at the Crown and Anchor Pub, the favorite hangout of Greyhound fans. In reality, this establishment is known as The Prince’s Head, but for the three dates available—October 23, 24, and 25—it will be transformed once more into the show’s pub, and guests will be virtually greeted by the lovable Mae, played by Annette Badland.

Once checked in, AFC Richmond’s best fans will then enjoy a variety of Ted Lasso-inspired fun, including:

  • Enjoying pub fare while discussing their favorite moments from the show.
  • Cheering on the beloved local Richmond sports teams, decked out in AFC Richmond gear, of course.
  • Taking part in a competitive round of darts—whether left- or right-handed—or aiming for the highest score on the pinball machine.
  • Taking a seat at Ted’s favorite table in the pub and challenging their fellow guests to a round of chess.
  • Showing off their karaoke skills with a rendition of their favorite song.
  • Trying those biscuits and enjoying them over some English tea (or as Ted calls it “hot brown water”).

The most important thing for potential guests to understand before booking is that this is not a contest. All aspects of travel must be handled by the visitors, just as they would with any Airbnb booking. Also, this thing is going to book in light speed, so have those refresh-clicking fingers ready.

The pub boasts two bedrooms with two beds and one bathroom, accommodating as many as four guests. With a prime location in Richmond, it is within walking distance to plenty of retail stores, and Coach Lasso’s apartment on the Richmond Green is also nearby. That makes an excellent selfie opportunity if guests can find the building.

No pets or parties are allowed, lest visitors wish to earn a red card. Other than that, it’s Richmond til we die when season three kicks off this week.

An aerial view of Rocca delle Tre Contrade, a luxurious 12-bedroom villa located in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
There’s so much more to Taormina than just ‘The White Lotus’—all you need is the right villa. The Thinking Traveller

Let’s state the obvious: The White Lotus is an absolute smash hit. Thanks to the success of the first season, guests have been flocking to Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, at least a little more than usual. Season two was just as entertaining and inspiring, because it will be a while before any of us can get a room at the spectacular San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel. And if you’re up to date on the rumors, then you know now might be the time to book a stay at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto.

But let’s not give up on that dream trip to Sicily just yet. While rooms at the Four Seasons or some of the other beautiful resorts and hotels in and around Taormina are in high-demand, The Thinking Traveller has a pretty great alternative: luxury villas. Specifically, there are four properties that are ideal for any kind of getaway, from a romantic escape to the dream family vacation. Just try to keep all the drama to the actors, okay?

Rocca delle Tre Contrade

The private pool at Rocca delle Tre Contrade, a luxurious 12-bedroom villa located in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Guests can lounge by the pool and enjoy the spectacular views of Taormina without having to deal with resort crowds. The Thinking Traveller

Let’s start big and bold with an aristocratic estate that screams the destination wedding of your dreams. With a dozen bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the option to be fully serviced, this villa basically becomes a resort, taking luxury to new heights—and I’m not talking about the views offered by this elevated setting. But the scenery is phenomenal here, as guests will undoubtedly fall in love with the breathtaking looks at the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.

From the infinity pool to the wine room, the amenities in this villa are astounding. There’s even a gym for getting in a morning workout, but most guests will probably want to break a sweat exploring the magnificent grounds.

Don Arcangelo all’Olmo

The pool at Don Arcangelo all'Olmo, a luxurious 12-bedroom villa in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Surrounded by beautiful gardens, this villa puts an emphasis on seclusion. The Thinking Traveller

Want something that feels even more secluded? This 12-bedroom villa is equally majestic and also capable of being fully serviced, but guests will especially love how this property seems to be built into its gorgeous, lush surroundings. Friends and family can argue over who gets which room, but the bulk of the vacation time will be spent celebrating in the common spaces, especially outdoors.

Arguably the best aspect, at least for anyone visiting Italy for the incredible food, is having a chef on-site to prepare meals each day, if requested. There isn’t much better than authentic cuisine with views of the sea.

La Prora

The outdoor, poolside dining area at La Prora, a seven-bedroom luxury villa in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Smaller groups will enjoy plenty of spaces for intimate moments at this villa. The Thinking Traveller

Sleeping up to 14 guests in seven bedrooms, this villa has been upgraded to blend its historic elements with modern luxuries. Guests will probably want to call dibs on the ground floor rooms since they all open onto a shaded terrace with all the furnishings required for a lazy day of simply enjoying life. However, that would cut into pool time, so plan accordingly.

Between the stylish design and décor and, again, the stunning views, this villa is almost guaranteed to cause multiple people in your party to attempt to stay forever.

Villa Carmine

The pool and outdoor space at the three-bedroom Villa Carmine in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Guests who want to be near the action in Taormina will appreciate this stylish villa. The Thinking Traveller

Owned by the same family for decades, this three-bedroom villa is as authentic as it is luxurious. Smaller groups or families who want to explore as much as relax will appreciate the setting, as it is located right in the heart of Taormina. Everything is within walking distance, from the landmarks to the city’s best restaurants, and some of the region’s oldest cities and nearby heritage sites make for memorable day trips.

But little will top waking up each morning and staring out into the city, as it will be all the inspiration everyone needs to start a new adventure.

San Domenico Palace
The incredible setting offers magnificent views of Mt. Etna and the Ionian Sea. San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel

Few TV shows and movies have lit a powder keg around pop culture travel quite like HBO’s smash hit series, The White Lotus. Out of everything that has been set and filmed in paradise—or set in one tropical destination but made in another—no production has invoked Liz Lemon’s catchphrase “I want to go to there” quite like this one, and thanks to the recently concluded second season, all eyes are reportedly on Sicily.

Specifically, people have been Googling and Asking Jeeves like crazy: Which resort did the characters stay at? The answer is the phenomenal San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel in Taormina.

Royal Suite
Every palace needs a Royal Suite, and this one will make any peasant feel like a king. San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Thanks, I’m going to book a room now!” Unfortunately, for starters, the hotel is closed until March 14 as the staff prepares for what will presumably be one of the biggest years in its history. And when it finally reopens, interest in this property is already sky high, which means it will be busy. Contrary to some reports, the Palace’s reps tell me it isn’t completely sold out for 2023, but it’s probably going to take a lot of praying and refreshing the booking page, unless your schedule is open the week of June 5.

In the meantime, we can all do what we do best: daydream. And San Domenico Palace makes that especially easy.

Long Before Jennifer Coolidge

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor once had a grand time at the Palace, prior to a headache. San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel

Prior to becoming a hotel in 1896, San Domenico Palace was a convent, which makes the fact that a newspaper once called Taormina “Disneyland of sin” very amusing. Why did it earn that reputation? We’ll leave that to local legends; however, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realize that the wealthy and famous guests who have checked in for more than a century—from Baron Rothschild in its earliest days to Audrey Hepburn in the 1960s and Madonna just last year—probably treated the property and its surroundings like a playground.

San Domenico Palace garden
Talented guests undoubtedly drew inspiration from the hotel’s beautiful gardens. San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel

The Palace has been as much a haven for some of the world’s greatest writers, including Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Henry Miller, Oscar Wilde, and D.H. Lawrence, as it has a place to be seen for glamourous stars of their times, like Sophia Loren, Joan Crawford, and Ingrid Bergman. And while it was Greta Garbo’s annual getaway for nearly 30 years, it might be better known as the place where Elizabeth Taylor El Kabong’d Richard Burton with a mandolin on their room’s terrace.

What Makes It So Amazing?

plunge pool
Romance has always been a primary element here. San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel

Where else would a palace exist in Italian paradise than on a promontory that offers captivating views of Mt. Etna and the Ionian Sea? In fact, that’s the “Thing the Show Gets Wrong” about the setting, because there’s no way for guests to arrive by boat—the real dock is at La Cambusa at Giardini Naxos—and the beach scenes are actually filmed at Unahotels Capotaormina. Small screen embellishments aside, there’s still so much to love on-property.

All great vacations begin in the accommodations, and visitors may find it hard to leave their rooms, no matter the choice, from the 301-sq. ft. Superior Room to the 1,507-sq. ft. Royal Suite. Five is a special number here, because that’s how many types of guest rooms, suites, and specialty suites there are to choose from, and they’re all luxurious. Although, the Executive Suite with Plunge Pool might take the cake. Just leave the string instruments inside.

pool
If a regular picture is worth a thousand words, a selfie here might be valued at 6 billion. an Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel

Guests who want to relax in the water might even prefer a dip in the hotel’s infinity pool to the sea below, because the former is where creative cocktails and delicious bites from Anciovi are enjoyed. Mornings can be spent strolling through the lush gardens before heading out to lunch at any of the town’s various restaurants, but at least one evening should be spent at the Palace’s Michelin-starred Principe Cerami, where celebrated chef Massimo Mantarro’s signature dishes leave visitors speechless.

With a location this convenient, the concierge can help schedule a car rental for exploring the landmarks and some of the other neighboring cities. Of course, a day trip to the island of Ortigia is the icing on the cake. Just don’t take too long to book or else we might learn where season three is taking place and fall in love all over again.

Could an Asian resort be in the cards? That seems to have the best odds right now.

Where was Knives Out 2 Filmed: Quick Facts about the ‘Glass Onion’ Filming Location in Greece https://www.islands.com/resorts/netflix-glass-onion-knives-out-filming-location/ Tue, 03 Jan 2023 16:45:08 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=46167 Edward Norton’s billionaire retreat is a villa at the Greek resort Amanzoe, and it’s just as spectacular as it looks.

Imagine having to clean all that glass. No thanks. Netflix

Netflix had fans of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in a bit of a tizzy over the holidays after a listing for billionaire Miles Bron’s private island estate appeared on Zillow. If the eye-exploding price tag of $450,000,000 didn’t tip people off that this was a clever marketing ruse, the “Sponsored by Netflix” label should have; however, some people were blinded by the literal glass onion and couldn’t help but dream of purchasing such a home in the Greek Isles.

Just for giggles, the retreat of the fictitious “genius,” who will forever be remembered in the same breath as the Mona Lisa, was listed by Derol Zablinski, aka the guy just working through some things, and boasts of “multi-layered living in paradise.” The 29,000-sq. ft. compound sits on a 26-acre lot and includes 17 bedrooms, 22 bathrooms, a state-of-the-art gym, hourly time chime voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a spa, and many priceless works of art. However, some of those might be in more pieces than they were a month ago.

Where was ‘Glass Onion’ filmed?

If this was a real listing, we’d warn potential buyers of fire damage but it’s not, so no worries. What is real, however, is the movie’s filming location: Amanzoe, a stunning, luxurious resort in Porto Heli, Greece. Here, guests seeking seclusion and spoils will discover some of the most amazing villas offered anywhere in the world. That includes the truly magnificent, Acropolis-inspired Villa 20, which is the perfect cover for a billionaire’s murder mystery retreat.

An aerial view of Amanzoe's Villa 20 multilevel property and pools.

Villa 20’s Amenities

While it’s not nearly as big as the Glass Onion residence—and it certainly does not feature the marvelous dome, a dock built by Banksy, or the elevated parking pedestal for “Baby Blue”—Villa 20 sleeps as many as 18 guests in nine bedrooms and offers a bevy of amenities that make this property a resort unto itself, ideal for larger family getaways for the most incredible occasions.

Designed with the Peloponnese peninsula’s immense natural beauty as inspiration and the Aegean Sea as a majestic backdrop, there’s no such thing as a bad view from the villa’s five pavilions. Three offer master suites and their own swimming pools, while four luxury studio bedrooms will spoil guests enough that they won’t be upset about not calling dibs on the bigger rooms. There are six pools in all, including a pair of heated infinity pools on the second and sixth levels.

  • A meeting room for when business can’t wait
  • Full library and games room
  • Five kitchens
  • Private beach cabana
  • Yoga platform
  • An outdoor BBQ area with one massive table, and a traditional Greek taverna set among the olive trees.

One element from the film that is most definitely real is Villa 20’s beautiful gardens, although no one will have to worry about a loud voice alerting everyone else to smoke should a guest slip away for a post-dinner cigar. Just leave the snooping to Benoit Blanc.

Other FAQs about Knives Out 2 filming locations

The first Knives Out film takes place primarily in Harlan Thrombey’s Massachusetts estate, which is actually the Ames Mansion, built in the 1920s and located in Borderland State Park. (Fun fact: It was also used in the 2016 Ghostbusters film, starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.) Director Rian Johnson didn’t change the formula too much with Glass Onion, as it also mostly takes place in one location: Amanzoe’s Villa 20.

However, there are a few other locations of note, including the Port of Dapia in Spetses, where Ethan Hawke shows up for a New York minute to give the guests their miracle cures. Another location that deserves a little more fanfare is Benoit Blanc’s Manhattan apartment, where Helen Brand asks for his help. That magnificent balcony can be found at 778 Park Avenue, and the residence has been called home by Vera Wang, Mark Rockefeller, and Gary Cooper, among other celebrities. Finally, the scenes involving Andi’s home and the road where Miles almost pancaked Duke were filmed in Connecticut. (We’re not counting the interior stage reshoots that took place in Serbia.)

  • What resort is the Glass Onion filmed? Amanzoe’s Villa 20, located in Porto Heli, Greece
  • Is the Glass Onion house real? Villa 20 is very much real, but it doesn’t have the glass onion or a pier built by Banksy
  • Where are Knives Out 2 filming locations? In addition to Porto Heli, scenes are also filmed in Manhattan and Connecticut, with additional work done in Belgrade, Serbia
  • Where in Greece is Glass Onion filmed? Scenes are filmed in Porto Heli and Spetses
  • Can you visit or stay at the Knives Out 2 house? Villa 20 is very much available, although it is quite expensive
  • What island is the Glass Onion filmed on? While the movie depicts Miles Bron’s getaway as a dream private island home, Amanzoe’s Villa 20 is actually located on a peninsula in Porto Heli

When the cast and crew of No Time to Die, the 25th James Bond film, gathered at Ian Fleming’s villa at GoldenEye resort in Oracabessa, it signaled the start of something exciting for Jamaica. For the first time since 1973’s Live and Let Die, James Bond returned to the island, not just for a ceremonial announcement, but as a setting.

As Jamaica Film Commissioner Renée Robinson explained at the time: “Jamaica is the home of James Bond. This is where it started. All the books were written here. We’re ready to bring Bond back home. This is a big deal.”

For the latest film, the spotlight was on Port Antonio, where “a significant portion” was filmed. Whereas Port Antonio was once known as “Jamaica’s best kept secret,” Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett said 007 put an end to that.

“That secret is out… and out in a big way. You don’t get much bigger than James Bond—one of the greatest movie franchises ever—and we all know the love affair its founder, Ian Fleming, had with Jamaica over the years.”

Among the most exciting aspects of Bond movies are the exotic filming locations, as fans travel with 007 on the big screen and watch as he saves the world. But why stop there? Devoted fans can visit these filming locations from the entire franchise, from Bond’s “home” to the beautiful beaches of Sardinia.

Before you schedule a boat excursion, you should know the titular villain’s exclusive private island, Crab Key, doesn’t exist. Some of Bond’s debut adventures took place in Kingston, but Dr. No’s secret lair was a composite of several scenic locations, including Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios.

The beach at Laughing Waters was the setting for arguably the most famous scene in Bond history, when Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress) emerged from the ocean. That’s why it’s now also known as Crab Key Beach.

Long before Nassau was a tourist destination, and even before the island had a bridge, a Bond villain named Largo called Hog Island home. As the story goes, the owner of Hog Island changed its name to Paradise Island and eventually allowed Bond producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to film Thunderball on his section of the island, which is now home to The Atlantis Paradise Island. His wife just so happened to land a small role in the film, including a quick dance with Sean Connery.

Fans can visit Clifton Pier in Nassau Harbour or hire a tour guide, like Cheryl’s Bahamas Taxi and Tours, to swing by the Rock Point villa that served as Largo’s Palmyra lair. But diehard Bond fans will want to take a dip in Thunderball Grotto and then schedule the “James Bond Wrecks” dive package with Stuart Cove to check out the remains of Thunderball‘s Avro Vulcan bomber.

Live and Let Die — Jamaica

Just as Dr. No‘s Crab Key was made up of various spots in Jamaica, so was Live and Let Die‘s imaginary setting of San Monique. To experience the home of Baron Samedi, fans can stay at Couples San Souci in Ocho Rios, which served as a hotel and nightclub in the 1973 film. Then, head to Jamaica’s north coast and take a tour of the Green Grotto Caves, where Roger Moore’s Bond took out the evil Doctor Kananga.

The film’s Louisiana crocodile farm was actually located in Falmouth, Jamaica, and is known today as the Jamaica Swamp Safari Village. Guests can visit this wildlife preserve and see more than 150 American crocodiles, and even hear the story of how the first owner, Ross Kananga, ran across his crocs for the film’s unforgettable stunt.

The Spy Who Loved Me — Sardinia, Italy

Located on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, Hotel Cala di Volpe served briefly as Bond’s accommodations, before he took on Karl Stromberg in Atlantis. Bond fans looking to stay in the spy’s spacious suite will be disappointed to know it can’t be reserved, because his room was actually the hotel bar.

Set out from this hotel to recreate the route of the film’s legendary car chase scene (at safe speeds, of course). Good luck finding a Lotus Esprit, though. A better idea is simply relaxing on nearby Romazzina Beach, where Bond’s car came ashore.

For Your Eyes Only — Corfu, Greece

Corfu's Issos Beach
Corfu’s Issos Beach was the setting for a thrilling dune buggy chase, but it’s much better for relaxing under an umbrella. Shutterstock

Greece’s Corfu Island was featured prominently in this 1981 film, from Corfu Harbour to the Achilleion’s casino. The small village of Pagoi won’t offer much adventure and excitement, but Bond fans will want to stop by the appropriately-named Spyros Bond 007 Cafe Bar, where the walls are adorned with autographed photos of Roger Moore and his For Your Eyes Only co-star, Carole Bouquet, as well as other Bond actors.

Fans can also grab some loungers and umbrellas at Issos Beach, where the film’s dune buggy chase was filmed.

License to Kill — Key West and Isla Mujeres

Famed Mexican diver and filmmaker Ramon Bravo directed the underwater scenes for this 1989 Timothy Dalton entry, filmed in Isla Mujeres. Dive companies like Carey Dive Center and Poc Na Dive Center offer trips to Manchones National Park, where the Cross of the Bay statue serves as an underwater tribute to the late Bravo.

Bond fans can stay dry in Key West by visiting Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea, where Felix Leiter’s wedding took place. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is already a must-see for tourists, but it is also the place where Bond’s license to kill was revoked.

GoldenEye — Arecibo, Puerto Rico

In this 1995 film, the Arecibo Observatory was portrayed as an antenna hidden underwater in Cuba, but in reality it is located in the Puerto Rican municipality of the same name. While the radio telescope collapsed in 2020, fans can still check out the visitor center to learn about the site’s history. But don’t get your hopes up for a view like 006 and 007 had in the film’s climactic fight.

Instead, leave the center and head to one of the local beaches, like Los Morillos or Las Tunas, and enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

Casino Royale — Nassau, Bahamas

Four Seasons Ocean Club
You might not get James Bond’s actual Ocean Club, but it won’t matter with a view like this. Four Seasons

Sean Connery reportedly loved filming Thunderball in the Bahamas so much that he bought a home in Lyford Cay, and became a lunchtime regular at One&Only Ocean Club. When Daniel Craig took over as 007 with 2006’s Casino Royale, it was only fitting that the franchise returned to its Caribbean roots and paid tribute to its first star by filming the poker scenes at this resort, where Craig’s Bond made Villa 1085 a popular accommodation.

The resort became a Four Seasons property in 2017 and was renamed, simply, The Ocean Club, which recently unveiled an extensive renovation. The villas are still available at quite the price, but visitors can make reservations for lunch or dinner at Dune and check out the resort’s Versailles Gardens that were also featured in the film.

Almost 30 years have passed since the original Jurassic Park film was released, and it’s safe to assume that Steven Spielberg and Co. were confident they had a blockbuster on their hands. Some of the more optimistic studio execs might have foreseen a future with a massive franchise, merchandise, spin-offs, and theme park tie-ins, but it’s still pretty surprising that all this time later fans are still wondering what’s next following the conclusion of the second trilogy with 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion.

Spoiler alert: There will be more movies.

Until the next project becomes a little clearer, though, fans can still enjoy and visit some of the films’ major stars. The islands of Hawaii provided the backdrops that helped the mystical homes of dinosaurs come to life. Here are nine Jurassic Park filming locations you can visit on your next trip to Hawaii. Please note that some locations are on private property, so it’s important to follow posted signs.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Kualoa Ranch, Oahu
Kualoa Ranch is a popular choice for film and TV projects that require immense natural beauty. Shutterstock

This spot may look familiar. Dubbed Hollywood’s “backlot of Hawaii,” Kualoa Ranch has served as the filming locations for several movies and TV shows, including Hawaii Five-0, LOST, Kong: Skull Island and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. One of the most notable movies filmed here is the first Jurassic Park, and several scenes from Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom were filmed here as well.

While being chased by dinosaurs, Grant and the kids took cover behind a fallen log, which almost wasn’t part of the film. In 1992, production was forced to move from Kauai to Oahu for a few final scenes due to Hurricane Iniki. Had the storm not caused the location change, this famous fallen log would never have made its big screen debut. The log is a popular photo op on Kualoa Ranch’s movie tours.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Manawaiopuna Falls, Kauai

In an early scene of the first Jurassic Park, a helicopter lands at the base of a beautiful waterfall. You’ll find this spot on Kauai—in fact, Manawaiopuna Falls is now commonly referred to as “Jurassic Park Falls.” Want to recreate the scene? The site is located on private property and is only accessible via helicopter, so you’ll need to take a tour with one of the helicopter companies that are permitted landing access, like Island Helicopters Kauai.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Na Pali Coast, Kauai
The Na Pali Coast is already a must-visit location, film ties or not. Shutterstock

In 1997’s Lost World, Kauai’s NaPali Coastline is shown as the fictional Isla Sorna, which is located approximately 90 miles from the fictional Isla Nublar.

Kipu Kai, Kauai

One of Kauai’s beaches, Kipu Kai, is also featured in Lost World, and can be seen when the Bowmans are dining on the beach. Located on Kauai’s southeastern side near Moleuhu, the beach is difficult to access and can only be reached via boat. To catch a glimpse of the area, take a Kipu Kai Ranch tour.

Pilaa Beach, Kauai

Jurassic Park III‘s final rescue scene features Kauai’s Pilaa Beach. This difficult-to-access beach is infrequently visited and not good for swimming. But if you brave the steep, rocky access trail you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and solitude.

Jurassic Kahili Ranch, Kauai

Other scenes from Jurassic Park III were filmed at Jurassic Kahili Ranch, however the ranch is private property. No tours are available and the no trespassing rules are strictly enforced.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Garden of Eden, Maui

For 2015’s Jurassic World, the helicopter entrance scene was filmed on the north shore of Maui, near the Garden of Eden Arboretum.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Makai Research Pier, Oahu

Also in Jurassic World, the Nublar ferry arrives on the Makai Research Pier, which is open to the public. The Navatek Boat that doubled for the ferry in the movie has since been retired, but you can whale watch or go for a dinner cruise on one of the company’s newer vessels.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Halona Beach, Oahu
There are worse places to wash ashore than Halona Beach. Shutterstock

In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, when Owen, Claire, and Franklin wash ashore after escaping a volcanic eruption and dinosaur stampede (because it wouldn’t be a Jurassic Park movie without one!), the spot is Halona Beach. A steep, rocky hike is the price of admission, but the picturesque cove is worth it. Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides were also filmed here, though they called the spot Whitecap Bay.

As an added bonus, drive by 42-139 Old Kalanianaole Road on Oahu and see where Chris Pratt lived during filming.

‘Ticket to Paradise’ is Set in Bali—But Here’s Where it was Actually Filmed https://www.islands.com/resorts/ticket-to-paradise-is-set-in-bali-but-heres-where-it-was-actually-filmed/ Tue, 25 Oct 2022 20:19:06 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=45653 The new romantic comedy, starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, is full of stunning tropical island scenery and splashy comic antics.

Tangalooma Island Resort
Moreton is home to Tangalooma Island Resort, where scenes for Ticket to Paradise were filmed. Tangalooma Island Resort

The new romantic comedy that reunites stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney, Ticket to Paradise is set on the Indonesian island of Bali, but here’s a fun nugget of movie trivia: It wasn’t actually filmed there. What tropical paradise was chosen to fill in? That would be Moreton, an island in the Australian territory of Queensland that’s located just a ferry ride away from Brisbane. And assorted other locales along the Gold Coast and in the Whitsundays were also involved.

Moreton, which is fringed with protected beaches and washed by aqua-hued waters, served as one of the outdoor film sets where beach scenes from the movie, which features Roberts and Clooney as a divorced couple who travel together to Bali to try to stop their daughter from marrying a man she just met, were filmed in December 2021. The island is home to Tangalooma Island Resort, which boasts a range of accommodation types from hotel rooms to beachfront villas and was the setting for the dolphins swimming scene and other coastal segments.

Hamilton Island
The cast and crew had to hop from Moreton to Hamilton Island to film the hotel lobby scenes. Qualia

However, interior shots (Roberts’ and Clooney’s hotel rooms, for example) were a stage set at Gold Coast Studios, while the Long Pavilion at Qualia resort on Hamilton Island served as the fictional resort’s lobby and bar. An incredible Tangalooma sunset does have a major cameo toward the end of the movie.

“Only a 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane, we often position ourselves as a ‘conveniently remote tropical paradise,’ with our seasonal temperatures, blue waters, tropical palms and relaxed island vibe perfectly fitting the Bali description,” said Bernie O’Keefe, Tangalooma’s Director of Marketing.

Glass Onion house

You Can’t Buy the Private Island Home from Netflix’s ‘Glass Onion’—But You Can Vacation There

Edward Norton’s billionaire retreat is a villa at the Greek resort Amanzoe, and it’s just as spectacular as it looks.

Other filming locations around Queensland included the Gold Coast’s outdoor Carrara Markets, Hamilton Island’s Catseye Beach, North Burleigh Beach and Palm Bay Resort in the Whitsundays. To follow in the steps of the cast and crew, check out this guide by Tourism Queensland.

Monaco’s Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo Wants Guests to Live Like James Bond https://www.islands.com/monacos-hotel-metropole-monte-carlo-wants-guests-to-live-like-james-bond/ Fri, 06 Sep 2019 18:23:37 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=42509 In honor of the upcoming 25th Bond film, ‘No Time to Die,’ the hotel is offering an incredible secret agent experience.

Hotel Metropole
When you arrive at Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo in Monaco, you’ll instantly be tempted to say, “The room is under Bond… James Bond.” Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo

You don’t have to be a James Bond super fan to appreciate the film franchise’s love and celebration of some of the most beautiful tropical island locations in the world. You don’t even have to know who the character is to have a reason to visit Port Antonio in Jamaica, but it’s hard not to admire (and even be a little jealous of) the way Bond always ends up in the most luxurious hotels or on the most gorgeous beaches before, during and after saving the world.

Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo in Monaco shares this sentiment and is now offering an incredible Bond experience of a lifetime. With the 25th Bond film, No Time to Die, set to open on April 3, 2020, the hotel will now allow guests to enjoy the appropriately named GoldenEye Experience.

Named for the 1995 film that introduced Pierce Brosnan as the legendary super spy, this experience is available to guests who book the Suite Carré d’Or penthouse, and the hotel has thought of everything.

Suite Carré d’Or
The view from the Suite Carré d’Or penthouse balcony will certainly make you feel like the most important person in the world. Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo

The day begins with a private visit to the Monte-Carlo Casino, where Bond sat down for a quick game against Xenia Onatopp, and continues with a helicopter tour of the city. Lunch will be enjoyed at the Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo’s Japanese restaurant, Yoshi, but it’s really just an appetizer for the most important Bond activity: cruising the French Riviera in an Aston Martin.

The evening is when the romance begins, as a couples massage welcomes guests upon their return, and is followed by a candlelit dinner prepared by the culinary team at Restaurant Joël Robuchon on the Suite Carré d’Or penthouse’s amazing terrace that offers breathtaking views of the city and beyond. A tuxedo and evening gown will be provided for the dinner, and, upon finishing the meal, the butler will deliver gaming chips and a cigar for the return trip to the casino, where the bartender will prepare the most important Bond accessory: a martini… shaken, not stirred.

Alas, all adventures must come to an end, and upon returning to the penthouse, guests will be greeted by rose petals and champagne. All that’s missing is a super villain, but with so much action in one day, you probably won’t even have time to save the world.
