On March 17, Southwest Airlines will launch its inaugural flight from Oakland International Airport to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport marking the beginning of daily service between California and Hawaii. The flight is the culmination of an effort by Southwest that began in 2017 with the goal of not only offering service to the Hawaiian Islands, but also between the islands.
Following the initial flight and the start of return service from Honolulu to Oakland on March 18, Southwest will operate twice-daily flights beginning on March 24. Daily routes from Oakland to Kahului, Maui, begin on April 7 (twice-daily on April 10), while service between San Jose and Honolulu and Kahului will launch in May. Interisland flights between Honolulu and Kahului start on April 28, followed by Honolulu and Kona, on Hawaii’s Big Island, on May 12.
“We’re focused on bringing Hawaii an authentically Southwest experience with comfort across all seating — for every customer — along with in-cabin snack enhancements for our flights between the State of Hawaii and the U.S. mainland,” Tom Nealon, Southwest Airlines’ President, said in a statement.
In the coming weeks, Southwest will also announce dates and details for flights from San Diego and Sacramento, as well as service to Lihue, Kauai.

To promote this new service, Southwest is offering one-way fares as low as $49 from Oakland and San Jose to Honolulu and Kahului, depending on the dates of travel. Flights between Honolulu and Kahului or Kona are available for as low as $29. The good news is that these fares are still available. The bad news is flights need to be booked quickly, because the promotion only runs through today, March 5. The discounted travel dates run through June 19.
