Antigua is often known for romance, but resorts like this turn it into the Caribbean’s best family destination. Verandah Resort and Spa

Becoming a parent changes the way we vacation—as it should. We picture the dream family vacation as one where the kids stay happy, while everyone is making memories and trying new things. But as much as it becomes about seeing them smile, it’s natural to miss what vacation looked like before.

That’s why we appreciate the family-centric, all-inclusive Verandah Resort and Spa on the eastern Caribbean island of Antigua. It’s a well-thought-out resort with plenty to do as a family, as well as opportunities for parents to kick back and enjoy some cocktails, downtime, and even a stolen romantic evening that can have you thinking you’re on a second honeymoon.

What Your Family Can Expect

  • A bevy of games and activities, from mini golf to ping pong, can be enjoyed throughout the property.
  • There’s not a bad seat in the house when it comes to enjoying the view from the Beach Bar.
  • When space is a priority, having interconnecting rooms is great for kids and especially parents who need a break.
  • The staff at the on-site tour desk is ready to make any vacation action-packed.
  • Little guests will have plenty of activities to choose from, but teens who are harder to please will love the variety.
  • When the day doesn’t begin without the perfect cup of coffee, the Pirate’s Den Coffee Shop is here for you.
  • Don’t be afraid to hit the open water on a variety of craft, as the staff is standing by to offer lessons.

For Them: Mini Golf Course

Verandah Resort and Spa in Antigua offers a variety of on-property games and activities for guests of all ages, including mini golf.
When you want to enjoy a round of golf in paradise but don’t have your clubs or the time, this version works well, too. Verandah Resort and Spa

Every beach town has a putt-putt course, and at Verandah, it’s on site. This pirate-themed 18-hole setup costs nothing extra and requires no sign up—just show up, ready to play through this scenic layout packed with waterfalls, ponds, tropical landscaping and fun, oversized obstacles like the giant treasure chest.

Mini golf is open from 9 am to 1 pm, and again from 3 pm to 9 pm. Our favorite time was after dinner and before a round of dessert at Seabreeze Restaurant.

For You: Beach Bar

The Beach Bar at Verandah Resort and Spa offers incredible views of the island, paired with delicious signature cocktails.
The Beach Bar at Verandah Resort and Spa offers incredible views of the island, paired with delicious signature cocktails. Verandah Resort and Spa

You can’t come to an all-inclusive resort and not partake if that’s your thing. The Beach Bar, just steps away from the main beach, is a sweet, low-key daytime hang where the beverages, like rum punch, are free flowing.

The best part is the layout. With stadium-like seating, every spot comes with a view of that turquoise water that the Caribbean is so famous for. It’s a great lunchtime venue, too, but we liked it best for al fresco dinners. The menu, with ribs, burgers, fresh fish, and salads, has something for everyone, and the vibe is more informal, so we could get in and out with enough time leftover to pop back to the pool or squeeze in a game of lawn chess.

For Everyone: Interconnecting Rooms

If your kids are old enough that travel entails two rooms, you’ll love that Verandah allows you to connect two rooms via the outdoor deck. Just like on cruise ships, this connecting door can be unlocked on both sides, creating a compound with a double deck, so to speak, and you each have your own space. If the adults need privacy, let the kids know and close that door.

What we loved most was that we could ease into our mornings, meeting each other out on the deck. I’d make my coffee in the room and then read outside, taking in the pink sunrise over the cove, until the whole brood was awake and ready for the day.

For Them (and You): Kids Club

The Kids Club at Verandah Resort and Spa hosts all ages for a variety of activities that will not only entertain them but teach them about Antigua as well.
From arts and crafts to smoothie-making classes, there’s enough happening in this spot that’ll make it easy to leave the screens back in the room. Verandah Resort and Spa

The life-size pirate ship caught our attention when we first passed by the Kids Club. It’s just one of the big attractions—along with a splash pool—that Verandah offers to this hangout for kids ages 2-12. The toys and foam-matted floors are geared toward younger children, but there are plenty of activities grown up enough for bigger kids. Check the daily schedule and you’ll find sessions like tennis and smoothie-making lessons.

The bigger win here is that the Kids Club also arranges movie nights and other evening sessions that start at 7 pm, so parents can have an evening off. It’s a chance to have a special dinner at Nicole’s Restaurant on site or make any other plans for just the two of you. The best part? Your kids will likely think you’ve done them a favor by giving them a kids’ night out.

For You: On-site Tour Desk

You could plan out all your excursions before you arrive, or you can take advantage of the on-site tour desk where you can ask questions from someone who knows the island intimately. The Pink Panther Jeep Safari is a must to get a lay of the land and appreciate the size of Antigua and its historical significance—and history doesn’t have to be boring to them.

Much of the island’s storied past dates back to Admiral Nelson and a time when battles took place at sea. Your kids will like visiting Shirley Heights, a fort where the entry is marked with cannons, once used to signal soldiers down below. If a full day tour is too much for your little ones, dinner at Shirley Heights is a fun outing with barbecue and live music. Be sure and arrive before sunset to enjoy the sweeping views of English Harbor.

The tour desk can also arrange a visit to Antigua Rainforest Zipline Tours, which allows zippers as young as 4. One of the shorter packages includes six ziplines, perfect for first timers. The Screamer is the longest, sending you careening over a river valley as you test your vocal cords. The best part? The staff shoots photos and videos of your experience, so you and yours can see the results, regardless is you choose to buy. If you’re anything like us, your faces during the Screamer will provide fodder for teasing, oh, for the rest of your life.

For Them: Pool Table and Ping-Pong

Your teens won’t come out and say it, but they’re secretly glad that this resort has a space just for them. In between the adults-only pool and the kids’ club is an outdoor, covered space known as the Chill Out Zone, with ping-pong, billiards, foosball, and shuffleboard. Older kids can also jump in with age-appropriate daily activities, including hikes, beach volleyball, games, and more.

For You: The Pirate’s Den Coffee Shop

It’s hard to say who brings more joy—the bartender or the barista. Luckily, Verandah has you covered on both fronts. Pirate’s Den, around the corner from the main pool, whips up specialty coffee drinks like frappuccinos and oat milk lattes, so you can get your caffeine fix throughout the day. You’ll also find cookies, cakes, and other sweets, as well as afternoon tea for an hour starting at 4:30 pm. Come 10 pm to midnight, you can also stop by for late-night snacks like croquetas.

For Everyone: Main Beach with Watersports

Verandah Resort and Spa sits on one of Antigua’s many beautiful beaches, and there’s a variety of water sports crafts available to guests.
Inexperienced guests will love that the staff is ready to offer lessons, while seasoned adventurers will head right out into the beautiful water. Verandah Resort and Spa

The main beach feels like a toy store—for kids of all ages. There’s a small fleet of Hobie cat sailboats, paddle boards, paddle boats, and kayaks that the watersports staff line up on the shoreline every morning, rigging and readying everything for you.

Paddle boarding was hop on and go for us, as we had all been before. We did, however, take the staff up on their offer for a sailing lesson. As many times as I’ve helmed sunfish, I wanted a few extra tips and pointers for sailing in the cove where the breezes come down off the hillside.

Bobbing just off the beach are a series of floating hammocks. Each has a wide outer ring and netting inside, and enough space to fit about four adults or two adults and four kids. We saw some people reading in them, but we, with drinks from the Beach Bar and Grill in hand, opted for a floating happy hour while just enjoying the view with each other.

Carnival
February is already an ideal time to visit Aruba, but Carnival makes it even more thrilling. Visit Aruba

The islands of the Caribbean are known for their vivid turquoise water, champagne-hued beaches, and verdant green landscapes, but once a year these two-dozen-plus isles reveal even more vibrant personas with the day-to-night Technicolor partying and pageantry that takes place during annual Carnival celebrations.

Amid the feathers, sequins, steelpan drumbeats, and dance moves, these islands’ history and culture are celebrated with passionate revelry—whether to coincide with pre-Lenten traditions or to mark important historic dates (the abolition of slavery in the British territories, for example) or nature-centric time periods.

Here’s a guide to when and how each island gets festive, and why you’ll want to experience it all.

Anguilla

Name: Anguilla Summer Festival

When: Late July–Early August

This small island known for its extraordinary beaches and excellent restaurants hosts its annual Caribbean carnival-style celebration, known as the Anguilla Summer Festival, from the end of July through the first week of August to commemorate the emancipation from slavery in the British Caribbean on August 1, 1834.

Anguilla’s festival features music, dancing, food, pageants, parades, beach parties, calypso competitions, fireworks, and boat races, with an event held almost every night (some are free and others charge a fee).

Antigua and Barbuda

Name: Antigua Carnival

When: Late July–Early August

Waves of music and locals dancing in colorful feathered costumes during high-spirited parades and street parties mark Antigua’s vibrant 13-day Carnival celebration, which takes place from late July through early August on Antigua. Timed to celebrate emancipation from slavery in the British Caribbean, Carnival in Antigua offers a calendar of events that include musical competitions, pageants, food fairs, calypso contests, and cultural shows, with the most important event being J’ouvert (on Emancipation Day), during which brass and steel-drum bands perform.

Aruba

Name: Aruba Carnival

When: February

The Dutch-Caribbean island of Aruba has a month-long Carnival celebration, centered in Oranjestad and San Nicholas, incorporating dozens of lively events, including Torch Light Parades through the streets at night, musical performances, colorful floats, lavishly costumed celebrants, electrifying Jump Ups and multiple parades culminating with the Grand Parade.

Finally, the Burning of King Momo marks the end of Carnival Season, after which the entire island goes on hiatus, known as Carnival Monday (an official day of rest).

Bahamas

Name: Junkanoo

When: Dec. 26–Jan. 1

The islands of the Bahamas are widely known for Junkanoo, an annual Carnival-style festival held between Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) that celebrates Bahamian history and culture with street parties and vibrant parades of elaborately costumed revelers.

The biggest take place on Bay Street in downtown Nassau, but Junkanoo can be enjoyed on all 16 islands.

Barbados

Name: Crop Over Festival

When: Late July–Early August

Carnival on Barbados is known as the Crop Over Festival, which last for three months (June through August) and culminates in early August to mark the end of the sugar cane crop season. This uniquely Barbadian festival, which owes its roots to the island’s colonial past when sugar cane was king, is known for its musical concerts, art exhibitions, calypso competitions, and revelry at Foreday Morning Jam.

The celebration climaxes during Grand Kadooment when costumed bands and masqueraders parade through the streets in St. Michael with a party that continues late into the night with music, food and fireworks.

Bonaire

Name: Karnaval

When: February (pre-Lenten)

With activities split between the Dutch-Caribbean island’s two main towns, Kralendijk and Rincon, Bonaire’s Carnival celebration, called Karnaval, features week-long revelry with all the usual festive events—musical performances, parades with costumed dancers, and colorful floats and fireworks—that culminates on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) in advance of Ash Wednesday.

British Virgin Islands

Name: BVI Emancipation Festival

When: Late July-Early August

With its heritage and ongoing status as a British Overseas Territory, the British Virgin Islands times its annual Carnival festivities to Emancipation Day (August 1)—in fact, the first Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in the BVI are public holidays. The BVI Emancipation Festival is a two-week celebration featuring food fairs, Jam Band music, and J’ouvert parades with floats and costumed revelers with the largest events held on the island of Tortola.

Cayman Islands

Name: Cayman Carnival Batabano

When: May

The Cayman Islands holds its national Carnival, known as the Cayman Carnival Batabano, annually in May at the start of the turtle nesting season; the festival’s name is derived from the word batabano, a Caymanian term that refers to the tracks left in the sand by egg-laying turtles.

Carnival on Grand Cayman is a cultural melting pot (Caymanians comprise more than 100 nationalities) of music, dance, and pageantry. There are both Adult Batabano and Junior Batabano parades, held on separate weekends.

Curaçao

Name: Curaçao Carnival

When: February (pre-Lenten)

This Dutch-Caribbean island celebrates Curaçao Carnival every year in sync with Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) and holds a series of festive parades (for children, teens, and adults) in its capital, Willemstad, over the 10 days leading up to the final nighttime Grand Farewell Carnival Parade in the hours before Ash Wednesday. The celebration on Curacao encompasses music, dancing, floats, and beauty pageants.

Dominica

Name: Mas Domnik

When: February (pre-Lenten)

The small Caribbean island of Dominica celebrates its French and African traditions during its annual Carnival celebration known as Mas Domnik, held to coincide with Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) and featuring calypso music, competitions, and two days of exciting street “jump-up.”

Dominican Republic

Name: Dominican Carnival (Carnaval Dominicano)

When: February and early March

Every Sunday during February, parades of brightly costumed and masked revelers fill the streets in cities all around the Dominican Republic, including Santiago, La Vega, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, and Barahona, for Dominican Carnival (aka Carnaval Dominicano).

Carnival season culminates on Feb. 27 with the island’s Independence Day celebration and then with the National Carnival Parade on the first Sunday in March along the waterfront in Santo Domingo.

Grenada

Name: Spice Mas

When: Late July and early August

While colorful Soca and calypso competitions are staged throughout the month of July, Carnival partying on the island of Grenada reaches its climax during the first week or second week of August in St. George’s with the marathon two-day celebration known as Spice Mas

Over its 48 hours, lavishly costumed locals dance through the streets, party on flotillas of boats and participate in the pre-dawn J’ouvert (also known in Grenada as Jab), which features chanting, dancing, and defiant symbolism, including the wearing of black body paint and oil to honor their African heritage and the carrying of broken chains to show a breaking away from slavery.

The culmination is Monday Night Mas and Tuesday’s hours-long Parade of the Bands.

This French Caribbean paradise begins its annual Carnival celebrations on Jan. 6 (Feast of the Epiphany) and ends on Fat Tuesday (aka Shrove Tuesday), with the major events, such as the Grand Parade on the Sunday before, taking place in its final few days.

This is a major cultural event throughout the Guadeloupe islands, but especially in Basse-Terre, which hosts the main parades of costumed dancers and musicians. On Ash Wednesday, King Vaval, the symbol of the Carnival, is burned.

Haiti

Name: Carnaval (Kanaval in Creole)

When: February (pre-Lenten)

Haiti’s Carnaval, or Kanaval in Creole, is an annual three-day celebration in February during which the streets of its capital, Port-au-Prince, where the National Carnival is held, and beachside Jacmel are filled with festively costumed locals. Jacmel is particularly known for the over-sized papier-mâché masks depicting animals and demons. Voodoo and historic slavery references comingle with heart-pounding street music and traditional dance performances.

Jamaica

Name: Carnival

When: April

In Jamaica, a series of Carnival events in early April leads to a week of dozens of festive events in Kingston, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay featuring colorfully costumed bands and dancers, capped off by the grand finale: Carnival Sunday with its Road March–Parade of the Bands in Kingston featuring large trucks blasting music and bands competing for best music and best costumes.

Martinique

Name: Carnival

When: February (pre-Lenten)

In the week leading up to Shrove Tuesday (aka Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras), the French-Caribbean island of Martinique celebrates its own unique Carnival. On Fat Sunday, parades feature locals carrying fantastically dressed puppets known as bwa bwa as well as nègres-gros-sirop (revelers with bodies covered in coal tar and sugarcane syrup).

On Fat Monday, islanders enjoy burlesque-like “mock weddings” featuring men dressed as brides and women suited up as bridegrooms. Fat Tuesday is Red Devils Day with parades of costumed red devils of all ages, while Ash Wednesday is The Day of She-Devils as revelers wear black and white to close out Carnival.

Montserrat

Name: Carnival (or Year-End Festival)

When: Dec. 26–Jan. 1

The island of Montserrat is one of several Caribbean island nations that celebrates Carnival to close out one year and welcome in the next. While events begin in early December, the main festivities (for Soca Monarch and Calypso Monarch) begin on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and the celebrations culminate on New Year’s Eve with Festival Day featuring a gala and New Year’s Day with a Street Parade to mark the closing of Carnival.

Puerto Rico

Name: Carnaval Ponceño

When: February (pre-Lenten)

Timed for the week leading up to Ash Wednesday, the Ponce Carnival (known to locals as the Carnaval Ponceño) attracts up to 100,000 revelers to the historic city of Ponce, located on Puerto Rico’s southern coast. In addition to a masquerade ball and street parades, a highlight of the Ponce carnival is the “vejigantes,” papier-mâché-masked folkloric creatures in colorful costumes and multiple horns that represent the Devil and taunt the crowd.

Participants also enjoy the appearance of King Momo, the crowning of Carnival Queen the ritual Burial of the Sardine to signify the start of Lent.

Saba

Name: Carnival

When: July

For a week in late July, the small Dutch-Caribbean island of Saba celebrates with a festive Carnival Village and events that include live musical performances, food stalls, and colorful dance troupes.

St. Barth

Name: Carnival St. Barths

When: February (pre-Lenten)

The tiny French-Caribbean island of St. Barth has a two-day Carnival St. Barth festival with a colorful Mardi Gras parade in the streets of its capital, Gustavia, and a nighttime party. The celebration ends on Ash Wednesday with the burning of Vaval on Shell Beach just outside of town.

St. Eustatius

Name: Statia Carnival

When: Late July–early August

Home to the smallest capital city in the world, Oranjestad, the Dutch-Caribbean island of St. Eustatius holds its annual Statia Carnival in late July and early August with vibrant Carnival March parades, musical performances, Youth Night, and more—and Carnival Monday is an island-wide holiday.

St. Kitts and Nevis

Name: Sugar Mas (aka St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival)

When: December–early January

While events on the two-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis actually begin in November with pageants, Soca competitions, and more, the main festivities of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival (aka Sugar Mas) kick into high gear just before Christmas with the Festival of Lights Glowfest and continue from Dec. 26 through early January with J’ouvert morning, the National Carnival Queen competition, Calypso Finals, and the Carnival Grand Parade.

St. Lucia

Name: St. Lucia Carnival

When: June–July

There’s a continuous calendar of Carnival events throughout June and July on St. Lucia—including steel-pan and calypso competitions, parties, and parades—but the festivities culminate in July with a two-day street celebration focused on Caribbean history and culture and featuring costumed revelers, bands, DJ music, and more.

St. Maarten/St. Martin

Name: St. Martin Carnival and St. Maarten Carnival

When: February (pre-Lenten) in St. Martin and April in St. Maarten

The dual-nationality island of St. Maarten (a Dutch territory) and St. Martin (a French territory) celebrates Carnival twice, with each side holding their parades and parties in a different month.

The French side gets things started in February with pre-Lenten jump-ups and colorful parades featuring zouk and reggae music on the streets of Marigot and Grand-Case, while the Dutch side holds a bigger extravaganza that lasts more than two weeks in April. It features Technicolor parades of calypso dancers in Philipsburg and a Carnival Village just outside of the capital featuring booths serving Caribbean culinary favorites.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Name: Vincy Mas

When: June-July

Preparation for St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ annual Carnival celebration, known as Vincy Mas, spans two months, but its biggest events begin on the last Friday of June and run for 12 days. These include the Miss SVG Competition, colorful Parade of the Bands, Calypso Monarch, and King and Queen of Carnival competition.

Trinidad and Tobago

Name: Carnival

When: February (pre-Lenten)

Famous for its music and pageantry, the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is celebrated annually on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, although some festivities begin right after Christmas. Carnival Monday on multicultural Trinidad starts before sunrise with J’ouvert as Carnival-goers parade through the streets covered in paint, grease, and mud and party until sunrise.

Later that day and all day on Carnival Tuesday the streets fill with costumed revelers, energetic dancers and bands playing Soco, steelpan, and calypso.

Turks and Caicos

Name: Maskanoo and Junkanoo

When: Dec. 26  and Dec. 31

The day after Christmas in Grace Bay on the Turks and Caicos main resort island of Providenciales, locals celebrate the island nation’s West African and Caribbean heritage with Maskanoo (in homage to the 19th century slaves who would celebrate Christmas by mocking their owners’ elaborate masked balls), which features street parties, music, food, and fireworks.

Then on New Year’s Eve, it’s time for Junkanoo parades featuring glittering masks and costumes and revelers who dance to drumbeat rhythms until dawn.

U.S. Virgin Islands

Name: VI Carnival, St. John Festival and Crucian Christmas Festival

When: April (St. Thomas), July (St. John) and December–early January (St. Croix)

The three islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands all hold Carnival celebrations—they just do them at different times of the year. To experience it on St. Thomas, you’ll need to visit in late April-early May for VI Carnival, the largest celebration with steel pan bands, lavishly costumed dancers, calypso shows, and more.

The St. John Festival celebrates the spirit of freedom—July 3, 1848, marks Emancipation Day for slaves who lived in the USVI—and the festivities begin in late June on St. John’s Day and culminate on July 4 in Cruz Bay with parades, parties, and fireworks.

St. Croix’s Carnival period is known as the Crucian Christmas Festival, with festivities in late December and early January spread between its two cities, Christiansted and Frederiksted.

The bay and resort of Carlisle Bay.
In addition to making guests feel right at home, this resort will also help get them started on a brand new wellness journey. Carlisle Bay

Wellness. Not only is it an increasingly popular buzzword in the lexicon of daily life but also in vacation-planning since getting away to someplace warm and sunny with activities designed to relax and strengthen the body, declutter the mind, and inspire healthy living is a great way to begin a wellness journey.

Anyone who loves the mellow vibe and soothing blue panoramas of the Caribbean should consider Carlisle Bay, an 87-suite resort on Antigua offering all kinds of enjoyable ways to kick your wellness resolutions into gear. Ideal for couples, families, or a group of friends, the property boasts the kind of understated luxury that fosters instant relaxation, along with an amazing culinary program and exceptionally warm and friendly service. It’s a terrific place to reset priorities, reinvigorate lazy muscles, and renew your spirit.

Plus, Antigua has designated January 2023 as Wellness Month and is offering a guide to wellness experiences all around the island. Carlisle Bay, which features a 900-sq. ft. Fitness Center with Techno-Gym equipment and offers stellar views of soothing sunsets across its horseshoe-shaped bay, makes it easy to start your journey.

Here are some of the ways you can embrace a healthier you as you enjoy a wellness getaway at this welcoming resort.

Start or strengthen your yoga practice

A person posing yoga on the beach of Carlisle Bay in Antigua
Even on vacation, there’s no better way to start a day. Carlisle Bay

The Garden Yoga Pavilion at Carlisle Bay is a serene, open-air oasis where complimentary yoga classes are offered multiple times a week, either in the morning or late afternoon (Pilates and Soca Zumba are scheduled, too). You can also book a personalized health retreat or private yoga or Pilates sessions to enjoy daily consultations and instruction.

As the island’s gentle breezes lift sheer fabric panels into the air all around you, an instructor will guide you through a series of stretching and strengthening poses, offering insights into the varying types of yoga and the benefits of a developing a personal practice.

This is a deeply inspiring and bonding activity for couples, mothers and daughters, or groups of friends to enjoy together, followed by a revitalizing green juice and a freshly prepared breakfast at waterfront Indigo on the Beach restaurant.

If yoga is a passion—or part of a resolution to lead a healthier lifestyle—Carlisle Bay also offers a series of three-night all-inclusive Wellness Retreats featuring specially curated yoga classes led by mindfulness coach, holistic health practitioner and yoga instructor Tara O’Rourke. I experienced this retreat in December and the next two are scheduled for Feb. 24-27, 2023 and May 19-22, 2023. O’Rourke, who lives and teaches in Dublin, Ireland, offers calming and insightful instruction for all ability levels and introduces participants to the ways yoga can help strengthen alignment and stability as well as work on core engagement and help achieve personal goals. With her gentle guidance you’ll feel your body beginning a transformation that you’ll want to continue at home.

A session on mindful meditation, a cooking demonstration, hiking and snorkeling excursions, and the Simply All-Inclusive food and beverage offer also included in the package, priced at $2,850 per room (double occupancy—so about $475 per person per night) in May 2023 and $4,395 per room (double occupancy—so about $732 per person per night) in February 2023 (which is high season in the Caribbean). Single occupancy rates for the three-night package are $3,318 per room in February and $1,884 per room in May.

Surround yourself with nature on a scenic hike

Hike and scenery at Carlisle Bay in Antigua.
While Antigua’s beaches are always the main draw, there’s plenty more to explore here. Carlisle Bay

While Carlisle Bay itself is set amid well-tended gardens and backed by a series of scenic green hills and ridges, the true lushness of Antigua’s rainforest is best appreciated on a hike—and surrounding oneself with the elements of nature is also known to have beneficial effects on physical and mental well-being. Several of the resort’s friendly and knowledgeable landscapers lead complimentary Nature Walks around the property’s gardens as well as longer small-group off-property hikes.

One option is Signal Hill, where you’ll trek upwards through a dense rainforest for an elevation gain of more than 1,000 feet on the moderately challenging 3.1-mile trail. The payoff? Sweeping panoramic views of Carlisle Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and the neighboring island of Montserrat. You’ll want to strike a pose at the summit and have someone capture the moment to remind yourself how strong and invigorated you felt getting there.

The second option is a moderately challenging 4.1 mile hike up Mount Obama, the highest peak on the island, which rises to a height of 1,318 feet and also offers stunning views. Pack sturdy sneakers, a hat, water bottle, and bug spray to conquer Antigua’s top hikes.

Hit the tennis courts for an energetic workout

The tennis courts of Carlisle Bay in Antigua.
While pickleball is all the rage, nothing will work up a Caribbean sweat like a good game of tennis. Carlisle Bay

Along with the gentle, rhythmic rush of waves tumbling onto the beach, the sound of bouncing tennis balls provides a hypnotic background beat at Carlisle Bay, which is home to nine tennis courts, four of which are floodlit for cooler post-sunset play. The resort offers complimentary court time as well as weekly complimentary clinics and tournaments—plus group clinics and private sessions with the on-site tennis pro at extra cost. The resort also has a pickleball court.

Relax your mind and body at the CARA Organic Beauty Spa

The resort’s CARA Organic Beauty Spa offers a full range of massage, facial, and body treatments—and after several yoga sessions, a challenging hike or an intense tennis match there’s nothing like a 60-minute Hot Stone Massage ($120) to ease overworked muscles. Other well-priced spa offerings designed to relax and rejuvenate include the 90-minute ESPA Mindful Massage ($150) and the 60-minute ESPA Body Wrap ($100).

View Antigua’s scenic coastline on a picnic lunch boat tour

There’s something about being out on the water, especially in the placid blue Caribbean, that instantly relinquishes any level of stress. At Carlisle Bay, you can book a Half-Day Beach Picnic that cruises along Antigua’s scenic coastline (the island has 365 beaches) as you enjoy lunch and a stop for snorkeling. The cost is $1,200 for up to six guests.

Learn to windsurf or paddleboard with onsite complimentary watersports

A person paddleboarding off Carlisle Bay in Antigua.
When the gear is offered on-site, guests would be fools to not give paddle boarding a shot. Carlisle Bay

It’s tough to enjoy most watersports if you live in a major city or the suburbs, but as part of your Caribbean wellness journey at Carlisle Bay you can enjoy unlimited and complimentary non-motorized watersports such as windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and sailing. The equipment is all on site and the friendly watersports staff will offer helpful hints and basic instruction to get you closer to mastering the activity of your choice.

Eat fresh, healthfully prepared meals at four restaurants

Food on a dinner plate.
Just because the food is fresh and healthy doesn’t mean it won’t be creative and delicious. Carlisle Bay

Vacation is typically a time of overindulgence, but the four dining outlets at Carlisle Bay—Indigo on the Beach, East, Ottimo, and The Jetty Grill—offer plenty of healthy options (and yes, some not-so-healthy ones, too) that are freshly prepared, locally sourced and incredibly delicious. The property’s on-site garden provides much of the greens and herbs as well as tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables to the kitchens.

At open-air Indigo on the Beach, breakfast options include the Healthy Bowl (quinoa, avocado, cherry tomatoes, poached egg, and other ingredients), while wellness-focused lunch and dinner starters include Roasted Beet Salad, Tuna Tartare, and Herb-Crusted Scallops and entrees such as Pan-Seared Tofu and Snapper served with squid pasta and leeks.

Ottimo, located poolside and serving Mediterranean classics, is the spot to enjoy Sautéed Mussels or Fish Carpaccio as a starter and then the Catch of the Day with eggplant caponata for your main (the pizza is also delicious if carbs work into your wellness plan). For an immersive pan-Asian dining experience, there’s East, where you can enjoy sushi, sashimi, and poke along with miso soup and edamame, followed by flavor-rich Thai Curry or Miso Fish grilled with yo choy and sesame-honey sauce.

For a more intimate lunch or dinner with a sea view, head to adults-only The Jetty Grill for healthy menu options that include starters like Callaloo Soup and Conch Salad followed by Fresh Catch of the Day or Island-Style Curry with chicken or shrimp. Every bite is a treat to be savored.

The culinary staff at Carlisle Bay knows what they’re doing and produces consistent, high quality, and flavorful options for guests to enjoy.

Take a break courtesy of Carlisle Bay’s Kids Club

What’s better than a place called The Caribbean Cool Kids Club? How about the places—the beach, the spa, the tennis courts, the sailboats—that mom and dad can enjoy while their kids are at the club engaged in fun organized activities (watersports, movie screenings, arts-and-crafts classes) led by qualified childcare professionals.

Since part of wellness is selfcare, leaving the business of entertaining your kids and teens to the resort’s pros frees up time for you to relax, revitalize, and reconnect. The complimentary Caribbean Cool Kids Club is open seven days a week from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:15 pm to 4:15 pm, leaving you with eight hours to do everything—or nothing at all.

Grand Fond Beach
St. Barth’s natural pools of Grand Fond Beach must be visited and getting there is half the fun. Jeanine Barone

Sure, the Caribbean conjures peaceful images of gentle breezes that rustle palm fronds and golden beaches where umbrella drinks are ubiquitous. But a Caribbean getaway that involves hiking may not be quite so laid-back. After all, given that the topography of so many of these idyllic islands is shaped by volcanic activity, it’s no wonder that the trails lacing the rugged landscape might require grabbing onto vines, or snagging exposed roots just to remain upright.

These sorts of adventures might satisfy thrill seekers, but here are seven picturesque paths for those who prefer an experience that’s as chill as the calm Caribbean vibe.

Golden Rock Nature Trail—Nevis

nevis golden rock
There’s a lot to see and learn about on this hike, so having a guide is very helpful. Jeanine Barone

Beginning on the property of a former sugar cane plantation, now the upscale Golden Rock Inn, this short track enwraps hikers in an abundance of foliage. You might want to book a guide (Sunrise Tours), who can point out and discuss the common usage of numerous fruit trees, herbs and other plants, such as bitter orange (used to make marmalade) and soursop (it’s a treatment for fever).

Overhead, vervet monkeys dart among the tree branches, and, along the way, two wee villages (Malli Ban and Stonyhill) are populated with simple chattel dwellings. Through openings in the foliage, you might spot the island’s signature sight, Nevis Peak, that towers over 3,000 feet, though it is often shrouded in clouds. Once you enter the rainforest, the flora grows denser, with aerial roots dangling like a fine curtain.

Katouche Valley Hiking Trail—Anguilla

Anguilla
Anguilla’s natural beauty is on full display throughout this journey. Jeanine Barone

Set on a private estate—and requiring visitors to sign up for a trek with Katouche Tours—this 1.5-mile flat trail is believed to have been created either by the indigenous peoples or the slaves who worked at the old plantation. The dense forest is rich in a variety of plant species, from white cedar, Anguilla’s national tree, to delicate tree orchids.

One captivating sight is Cavannagh Cave, a spacious, 30-foot-high cavern with an immense fig tree puncturing the roof, and where fruit- and insect-eating bats can be observed (and heard). Hikers will delight in the colorful butterflies fluttering about as well as the green throated Caribbean hummingbirds and other birds found along this path that terminates on the pristine sands of Katouche Bay Beach.

Signal Hill Hike—Antigua

Signal Hill
The view from Signal Hill is always breathtaking, especially when the neighboring islands are visible. Jeanine Barone

This two-hour, round-trip hike from Wallings Dam isn’t flat, but the mostly gentle climb to the island’s second highest point (1,200 feet) is worth the effort for the panoramic views. The route takes its name from the time (during the British occupation) when flags in different locations would signal to Fort James and Fort George, two major defensive outposts, if an enemy ship entered the harbor.

The route alternates between rainforest where tall mahogany, cedar and other trees shade your way, and sunny stretches with lemongrass blanketing the undulating landscape. A low stone wall beckons you to sit awhile and relish in the refreshing breezes and the views of protected Cades Reef. On a clear day, from the summit, you’ll be able to gaze at the neighboring islands, including St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, and Montserrat.

Natural Pools of Grand Fond Hike—St. Barth

St. Barth
At only nine square miles, St. Barth is an explorer’s delight, and this spot is a crown jewel attraction. Jeanine Barone

A narrow, sun-drenched, sandy path weaves along the cliff edge for barely a mile from Grand Fond Beach. But you’ll want to stop often, snapping dramatic photos of the wild sea from your elevated perch. Mountain goats traipse along the hillside, nibbling on the dry shrubbery. The shore below is a magnet for local surfers and body boarders who come to ride the tremendous waves at a spot aptly named the Washing Machine.

Farther along, you’ll spot a pair of clear teal green tidal pools below the trail. The salt waters are calm, protected from the roiling seas by a ring of volcanic rocks. Though they make for an attractive destination for a dip, you’ll have to scramble down (and back up) a rugged slope to get there.

Vatable Forest—Martinique

martinique
Pack a lunch for a picnic and turn exploring these trails into a day of adventure. Jeanine Barone

Populated with teak, Caribbean pine, palms and other trees, this stretch of woodland is networked with easy trails that come off a main path, crisscrossing this coastal expanse. (The scenery is so bucolic that getting pleasantly lost is something to look forward to.) This destination is especially popular with families who come to picnic. Those who stroll parallel to the water will enjoy lovely views of a small uninhabited island, Les Gros Ilet, and the placid Bay of Fort-de-France.

A few benches scattered about offer the opportunity to be mindful of the sights and sounds of the forest. You can also saunter along a boardwalk for close-ups of the mangrove forest, an ecosystem that’s vital to the health of the coast, as well as the life cycle of fish.

Central Forest Reserve National Park—St. Kitts

The trails in the Central Forest Reserve National Park were carved so visitors can enjoy multiple adventures. Jeanine Barone

In the rear of the Wingfield Estate, a former sugar plantation dating to the mid-17th century, a series of loop trails course through a thick rainforest that’s part of the Central Forest Reserve National Park. Hiking guide O’Neil Mulraine cleared these paths himself, creating a trail system that’s a bit more than three miles in length, with lots of options (many are fairly chill).

Because these trails are unsigned, it’s best to sign up for a trek with Mulraine (oneilmulraine@hotmail.com), who will point out the myriad botanical curiosities, from the sandbox tree with its spine laden trunk to the quill fern that resembles a feather. Paralleling the Wingfield River, you’ll hear the gurgling of water tumbling over boulders. Under the dense shade canopy, a small, serene pool makes for a picture-perfect spot to cool off.

Salt Rocks Nature Trail—Little Cayman

Follow in the footsteps of locals on this adventure and keep an eye out for the curious wildlife. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands

Just over a mile in length one way, this flat but at times limestone rock strewn trail originated in the 1840s as a path that locals would walk from Blossom Village to the Salt Rocks Dock on the north coast of Little Cayman, the smallest of the three Cayman Islands. Visitors who are keen on spotting flora and fauna will not be disappointed with this trek, starting at the airport in Blossom Village.

You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for reptiles, such as Sister Islands Rock iguanas and green anoles, as well as vitelline warblers, bananaquits and other bird species. The plant life varies greatly along your route and includes an array of cacti, from branched varieties to pillar shaped ones, as well as the pink blossomed whitewood tree, and banana orchids, the Caymans national flower.

When you think about escaping to paradise, does a beachfront villa in the Caribbean spring to mind? Aside from providing plenty of living space—whether traveling as a family or with a group of friends—a villa rental offers privacy, both on the beach and at the pool. Love to cook? With a modern kitchen, it’s easy to delve into local culture by transforming fresh regional ingredients into a communal feast and enjoying at around a dining table with a sea view.

Best of all: The nightly cost per person is usually far less than what you would pay at a resort. Here are 10 beautiful Caribbean beach villas for rent on Vrbo. All accommodate at least six guests (and as many as 16), have a private pool or hot tub and can be booked for about $89 to $140 per person per night at full occupancy.

But a recent refurbishment has also freshened the indoor and outdoor living spaces with island-inspired décor, there’s a trail down to a small private cove and it’s just a 10-minute drive to Cruz Bay and 2.3 miles to famed white-sand beaches such as Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay Beach.

The villa is adults-only (all bedrooms have king or queen beds) and pets or smoking are not allowed.

Airy and modern, the three-bedroom/three-bath Camden Nook villa is located steps from the sand between Mullins Beach and Holetown on the west coast of Barbados. Outdoor daybeds with gauzy canopies create a chic beach club vibe and a large plunge pool/Jacuzzi overlooks the brilliant blue sea—offering views of magnificent sunsets that guests rave about.

The villa also has a sleeper sofa, so it can accommodate up to eight guests and nearby Holetown, a charming foodie haven lined with restaurants, offers plenty of dining options.

Rates from $850/night for up to 8 guests, with a three-night minimum stay.

Sandpebbles Villa—Jamaica

An outdoor pool next to the beach.
Some villas are so nice and modern that they’ll feel like miniature resorts. Vrbo

Located just yards away from the white sand and aquamarine sea of Bengal Beach, between Ocho Rios and Falmouth, Sandpebbles features four bedrooms/four bathrooms and can accommodate up to 10 guests (bed configurations are ideal for six adults and four kids).

Loungers line a sparkling beachfront pool with a swim-up bar and indoor/outdoor living spaces with natural wood furniture make the most of the lush tropical setting and ocean views.

Rates from $890/night for up to 10 guests, with a three-night minimum stay.

Starfish Villa—St. Maarten

An outdoor lounge area by a pool and a beach.
New and improved design makes this villa one of the best choices on this laidback island. Vrbo

Located on Dawn Beach within the Coral Beach Club community on St. Maarten, the three-bedroom/three-bath Starfish Villa sleeps six and offers 5,300-sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor living space. A recent renovation has brightened the overall ambience and given the home a modern gourmet kitchen.

Guests can lounge around a magazine-shoot-ready beachfront terrace and pool with a covered gazebo or relax indoors amid breezy décor featuring Tommy Bahama furnishings.

Rates from $575/night for up to 6 guests, with a five-night minimum stay.

Bellamare Villa—Anguilla

A resort-style home with an outdoor pool next to a beach.
Nature lovers will be thrilled with the surroundings here—but that’s not to say they won’t love the accommodations, too. Vrbo

Set around a main infinity pool overlooking the tranquil sea just to the east of Anguilla’s stunning Shoal Bay Beach, Bellamare Villa features three bedrooms (two of them with king-size beds and ocean views; the third is much smaller with the option of two twins or a king) and three bathrooms, making it ideal for two couples and two or three kids.

A shady gazebo, lush tropical foliage and natural stone accents outdoors are complemented by polished wood floors and a white, blue, gray and yellow palette inside.

Rates from $770/night for up to 8 guests, with a seven-night minimum stay.

Palm Jewel—Turks and Caicos

An outdoor pool and lounge area by a resort-style home.
Fancy an elopement to one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and convenient destinations? There’s enough room here for a small reception, too. Vrbo

With room for 14 guests (eight of them adults), this five-bedroom/four-bathroom villa on Providenciales in Turks and Caicos makes a terrific spot for a small family reunion or a gathering of friends with young kids.

Located just 100 yards away from secluded, quarter-mile-long Sapodilla Beach, Palm Jewel features 2,200-sq. ft. of outdoor living space with a 40-foot infinity-edge pool, hammocks and a shady gazebo. Indoors, clean modern finishes and soaring whitewashed ceilings create a chic yet relaxed ambiance.

Rates from $950/night for up to 14 guests, with a seven-night (Saturday to Saturday) minimum stay.

Yumey Sands Villa—Exuma, Bahamas

A beach house with a pool and jacuzzi.
Pool or beach—it’s not a difficult decision since the daily answer will most certainly be both. Vrbo

Open-air relaxation, panoramic views and serene Out Island vibes are the hallmarks of this new four-bedroom/four-bath villa on Exuma in the Bahamas. It overlooks tranquil Tropic of Cancer Beach, sleeps 10 (eight of them adults) and features soaring ceilings with equally soothing taupe and pale blue décor atop natural wood flooring that brings the beach palette indoors.

An outdoor dining and lounging deck leads to a sparkling pool and hot tub with a stairway onto the beach.

Rates from $1,245/night for up to 10 guests, with a seven-night (Saturday to Saturday) minimum stay.

La Marea Oceanfront Three-Bedroom Villa—Antigua

An outdoor resort-style pool and lounge area near the beach.
This villa might be located in Antigua, but it feels like something you’d find in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Vrbo

Gather your best friends for a couples’ getaway at this sophisticated three-bedroom/three-bathroom oceanfront villa located on the northwest coast of Antigua. La Marea’s owner has filled the home with globally sourced, handcrafted furniture and artwork, giving it a Bali-and-Africa-meet-Caribbean ambience that’s rare in a rental villa.

There’s water access for snorkeling and beaches are nearby, but the pool with its surrounding green lawn is the place to be, especially at sunset when tangerine and mauve transform the 270-degree ocean views.

Rates from $760/night for up to six guests, with a three-night minimum stay.

Encantada Vieques Eco-Luxury Villa—Vieques, Puerto Rico

A beach coastline in the Caribbean.
Endless natural beauty awaits on Vieques, from the idyllic beaches to the famed bioluminescent bay that is the brightest in the world. Shutterstock

Open-air living is why many travelers escape to the Caribbean—and this five-bedroom/five-bathroom eco-villa on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques takes that concept to the max. Architect John Hix designed Encantada Vieques to be environmentally friendly and that not only means cement construction, no air-conditioning, and outdoor showers, but also no glass or screens in the windows. This provides natural cooling breezes, but also lets in local residents (yes, that means mosquitos and other larger insects).

Gather up to 16 friends or family to fill the various beds and sleeper sofas and enjoy being oh-so close to nature. It’s just a two-minute walk to Coco Beach, but the 94-foot infinity pool steals the show.

Rates from $1,299/night for up to 16 guests, with a three-night minimum stay.

A pool next to a beach resort and the shore.
Pools or beach, you can’t make a wrong choice when it comes to rest and relaxation at Silversands. Silversands

Back when I was in the music industry, working festivals and performing as a DJ, travel became my passion. Visiting places like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Miami, and various destinations in Latin America was exciting—and certainly helped me overcome my fear of airplanes—but it wasn’t until I started visiting the Caribbean islands that I truly fell in love.

One particular getaway to Aruba unlocked something in me—a desire to transform and be my best. With all that we have been through over the last year, I can’t wait to get back out there and return to so many of my favorite hotels and resorts that I have visited.

I’m most eager to start booking again, and we hope you will, too. Hopefully this selection will inspire you and add a little sunshine to your future.

Silversands—Grenada

A life of luxury awaits on the mocha latte beach at Silversands. The 43 suites and hillside and beach villas at this beloved resort are enveloped in the marvelous smells of the bountiful frangipani flowers and the spices from which this island draws its nickname, “The Spice Island.” The 100-meter infinity pool holds the distinction of being the longest in the Caribbean, and it is ideal for early morning lounging or staring at the sunset’s reflection (Grenada’s sunsets are the closest thing to heaven).

More interesting and especially fascinating is how the hotel subtly integrates its spaces throughout the northern end of the Grand Anse area with local houses, all wrapped up in the rainforest. The result is a splendid atmosphere and a Caribbean getaway unlike most others.

The Cliff Hotel—Negril, Jamaica

A resort next to the ocean.
You don’t have to look into the distance to find the natural beauty here. The property is as stunning as its surroundings. The Cliff Hotel/June Pascocello

Chilling on your terrace, lounging in a hammock while sipping a Red Stripe, and enjoying the sounds of the waves charging the rocks—this is the life at the best all-suite hotel in Negril. In addition to a beautiful, expansive pool that is ideal for kicking back, catching some rays, and enjoying some frosty Marleys, The Cliff Hotel is also home to an incredible natural saltwater pool nestled in the rocky shore.

Galley Bay—Antigua

Aerial photo of a beach resort strung along the shores of a beautiful, blue/green crystal clear ocean.
Is your favorite color green or blue? It doesn’t matter, because Galley Bay has plenty of both, and it’s all so captivating. Galley Bay

Honed for romance, Galley Bay is the Caribbean getaway everybody needs. It is so quiet that even at full capacity (barely the case) you won’t realize you’re not the only guests. There’s a patch of sand for everyone, even Giorgio Armani—he owns a villa on Galley Bay Heights, so you’re practically neighbors.

As a tribute to the artist Paul Gauguin, the South Pacific influence of the hotel is evident, and well assumed. Every room sits right on the sand, providing the incomparable sounds and sensations of the waves washing the sand. To top it all off, the food is delicious and the crafted cocktails are addictive. That’s Galley Bay life.

Guana Island—British Virgin Islands

A pool and lounge chairs overlooking the bay of the ocean.
The three-bedroom Anegada villa includes a plunge pool with some of the best views on the island. Guana Island

What do you really need to say about a glorious private island experience set on more than 800 acres and boasting seven beaches? Probably that it only allows 35 guests, with just 18 rooms and villas, making it one of the Caribbean’s most exclusive experiences from beginning to end. This really is a tropical dream come true.

And while all dreams end, and everything washes away with the tides, these memories will forever remain with you just as your name remains in Guana Island guest book. Maybe in the very near future you will have the chance come back, or maybe not. But if you do, the courteous, friendly staff will be there, smiling, ready to make your dreams come true again.

Serenity at Coconut Bay—Saint Lucia

Two lounge chairs on the deck by a pool and resort condo.
The Premium Plunge Butler Suite is stylish and secluded—the epitome of Saint Lucian romance. Serenity at Coconut Bay

Your fellow passengers would be insanely jealous if they knew that while they’re circling Saint Lucia for an hour and a half, you’re already enjoying your private plunge pool after a five-minute direct transfer. At Serenity at Coconut Bay, the privacy is paramount and one of the resort’s primary rules.

Here, your backyard is your playground. Pack a light suitcase and bring your sexiest bikinis, because your principal activities will take place between your private beach cabana and your suite. And you will be spoiled—even your private butler will become your best friend.

Jumby Bay Island—Antigua

A pool and spa lounge surrounded by palm trees and is next to a beach.
With 14 villas and 22 private villas—not to mention incredible amenities—this resort is ideal for everything from romantic escapes to family getaways. Jumby Bay

What makes Jumby Bay Island so special is that it all belongs to the homeowners, and they have their own palaces hidden among the palm trees (for example, check out the magnificent Lost Puffin). They help preserve the natural beauty of the island and keep life simple, as the sheep roam free, along with the odd tortoise and ducks. Exotic fruits and plants grow everywhere. You can even dine at the farm, or, if visiting on a Wednesday, pedal your way to a West Indian hangout at the pool grille, where you’ll be accompanied by steel pan sounds.

We can feel Antigua’s old-school charm while enjoying the sophisticated dining options, refreshing bars, warm Caribbean service, and irresistible suites. Managed by the Oetker collection, Jumby Bay is inarguably one of the best in the Lesser Antilles.

Round Hill Hotel and Villas—Montego Bay, Jamaica

An outdoor breakfast nook under a pagoda with curtains
Talk about breakfast with a view. Round Hill Hotel and Villas

When the rooms are designed by Ralph Lauren, it tells you everything you need to know about where you’re dropping your suitcases, right? Deeply rooted in Jamaican culture, everything about the way Round Hill Hotel and Villas operates is authentic yet distinct, and the result is a vacation experience that caters to the individual attitude and style of each guest.

As far as accommodations, the Grand Pineapple Villa Suite delivers beyond expectations. Each villa suite is housed within one of the 27 spacious private villas that are tucked into the hillside and overlook Round Hill Bay. You could end up in a romantic villa on the edge of the hillside, or you might stay in a secret agent treehouse hanging on the cliff in the jungle. It goes without saying that there is no wrong choice.

Casa de Campo—La Romana, Dominican Republic

Aerial photo of a beach and beach resort.
It might be located in the Dominican Republic, but Casa de Campo is otherworldly. Casa de Campo

This legendary hotel is spread across a generous 7,000 acres and boasts three championship golf courses, including Teeth of the Dog, which is considered by many to be the best in the Caribbean. Plush rooms and suites, in addition to complete villas overlooking the sparkling Caribbean Sea, are available for rent.

There are phenomenal culinary experiences to try and so much to do on-site and in the surrounding region, so be ready to get the most of your golf cart. Minitas Beach Club and Restaurant is also the perfect spot for watching the sunset. Simply put, Casa de Campo has very little competition in the Dominican Republic. Just ask Jennifer Lopez.

Laluna—Grenada

A pool at a resort overlooking the ocean.
Laluna offers an array of activities, from daily yoga classes to sunset sailing, but it’ll be hard to top the time spent by the pool, basking in the Spice Isle’s glory. Laluna

No, you didn’t make a wrong turn and end up in Bali. With its carved trees, thatched roof pavilions, Umbul-umbuls, and tribal statues, Laluna feels like it is worlds away, which is great when your goal is an incredible romantic getaway.

Fronting a fabulous beach, the huts of different washed-out colors seem like they have been painted in faux-fini. This hotel is one of the most unique in the region, if not the Caribbean and beyond.

Eclipse at Half Moon—Jamaica

A string of resort buildings strung along a beach.
You don’t have to be James Bond to vacation like him. Eclipse at Half Moon

What could please your partner-in-crime more than staying at the place where 007 himself, Roger Moore, once set a snake on fire for that classic scene in Live and Let Die?

Perhaps the recent opening of Eclipse, a brand-new beachfront hotel with luxurious oceanfront accommodations boasting incredible décor and details, from the lovely white shutters to the outdoor showers. Not to mention the “Tulumish” Spice and Hammock bar with its swings and classic Jamaican cuisine. This place is a treat for everyone from lobster freaks and famous jerk festins to equestrians and nature lovers.

Eclipse is a pure fantasy escapade surrounded by Jamaica’s incomparable natural beauty.

Hammock Cove—Antigua

A luxurious pool, spa lounge deck by a pool and ocean.
When people ask what it is about Antigua that keeps travelers coming back year after year, we simply point to Hammock Cove. Hammock Cove

This hippest all-villa hotel in Antigua runs with 24-hour service and on-call rotating ambassadors. Each villa is equipped with outdoor patios, an infinity edge pool, and a wet bar with top shelf spirits, all curated by the in-house sommelier. Oh, and don’t forget the 500-count thread Egyptian linens in the beds. Guests might even discover turtles swimming and nesting nearby.

Michelin-starred Chef Marco Festini concocts tremendous Caribbean lobster and ravioli dishes at Lighthouse. Just ask your ambassador to put two on the side for you before you enjoy your favorite Reggae vinyl in the “secret lair” known as Chairman’s Lounge.

Nisbet Plantation Beach Club—Nevis

A pool next to the beach at sunset.
Nevis is regarded as one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets and it is because of charming resorts like this one. Nisbet Plantation Beach Club

Steeped in history, Nisbet Plantation Beach Club seemingly never gets old, instead becoming more beautiful with each visit. The island’s only plantation hotel located right on the beach, this property is so quiet that it feels like your own little slice of heaven.

While all three of the on-site dining options offer something different (and delicious), don’t miss out on the weekly celebrations at Coconuts, where the rum punch will certainly have you feeling the Caribbean rhythm.

Excellence Oyster Bay—Montego Bay, Jamaica

Aerial photo of a pool resort by the ocean.
Rarely does a resort exceed the expectations set by its own name, but that’s certainly the case with this Excellence property. Excellence Oyster Bay

Sometimes a name is just a name, but Excellence routinely strives to make guests expect the best of its resorts, from Playa Mujeres to this truly special property located in the heart of legendary Montego Bay. As soon as guests pass through the gates here, the modern style and attention to detail in the design become overwhelmingly evident.

With the festive layout of the resort’s amenities, restaurants, and lounges—not to mention the suites with their marble accents and private pools—there’s no denying Excellence Oyster Bay’s place among Jamaica’s finest. And believe us when we say that splurging for the Excellence Club is worth it, because the exclusivity makes it feel like you’re staying at a resort within a resort.

Still craving more? Rent one of the private villas directly on the sand and enjoy the best this island has to offer.

Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana—Dominican Republic

Pool spa lounges next to a pool by the ocean.
Grab a seat with an umbrella, order a signature cocktail, and enjoy paradise. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

On stunning Juanillo Beach, you can spend your days in any number of ways: lounging in a sprawling infinity pool, practicing yoga by the water, or simply working on your tan. (We prefer all of the above, of course.) With a funky style and truly unique accents throughout, the accommodations provide positive vibes and views for days, while the hotel’s on-site dining options, including flavors of Tahiti at Brando’s and Indian cuisine at Journeys, are a must-try.

Or, if you’re looking to get a little more from your dining experience, take one of Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana’s daily cooking classes. They pair nicely with dance and Spanish classes, too. All in all, this place is high on energy and color, and it’s so much fun that you might forget to apply sunscreen between drinks.

Hermitage Bay—Antigua

A single pool at a resort overlooking lush, tropical mountains and the ocean.
Everything you expect from a Caribbean escape—golden rays of sun, waves crashing, peaceful bliss—is found here, plus a little more. Hermitage Bay

Happiness is guaranteed for anyone who takes the dirt road leading to Hermitage Bay. Guests are rewarded upon arrival with fresh-squeezed mojitos, and the truly inspiring and original Bob Marley portraits signal your chill Caribbean break ahead.

With just 30 cottages, this resort has earned its reputation as a beacon of Antigua’s hospitality by enhancing every aspect of the guest experience. This is especially the case with the food.

Rosewood Little Dix Bay—Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

A resort surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery.
Where the ordinary traveler can stay and enjoy a truly extraordinary Caribbean experience. Rosewood Little Dix Bay

As you make your grandiose arrival aboard the hotel’s catamaran from Tortola through Little Dix Bay, your butler will be waiting to transfer your baggage to your suite. Opened in 1964 by the visionary Laurence Rockefeller, this resort is a wonderworld. And despite the destruction caused by Hurricane Irma in 2016, Rosewood used its magic wand to restore and even revamp this property to its full glory.

While visiting Rosewood Little Dix Bay, enjoy the “beach drops” to a variety of hard-to-reach local spots, but especially the rocky caverns of The Baths. And be sure to indulge in Pavilion’s Trinidadian seafood pot with a nice wine from the restaurant’s extensive list. On a sunny day, under the “hairy” palapas, swimming in the crescent-shaped saltwater bath is tough to beat.

Calabash Cove—Saint Lucia

A small cove of ocean water next to a resort.
Caption: Live music, fresh food, majestic surroundings—this is why Saint Lucia is a favorite destination for so many people. Calabash Cove

With enticing suites, dreamy ocean vistas, mahogany loungers, a swim-up bar, and plenty of Planter’s punch, you’ll definitely find your happy place at Calabash Cove. The infinity pool is a big selling point here and is, as they say, to die for. Factor in the beach and guests will wonder why they would stay anywhere else.

The Balinese-inspired waterfront cottages will make it difficult to leave them, but the amenities will snap you out of it. Especially the Windsong Restaurant, where you’ll feel as though you’re dining on the highest platform of a cruise ship with lights in distance.

Petit St. Vincent—St. Vincent and the Grenadines

A small bunaglow style beach resort.
Caption: An emphasis on privacy and touches of tropical sophistication make this resort truly one of the most unique in the region. Petit St. Vincent

Ready for your Pirates des Caraïbes vacation? Fly to Barbados, where you’ll be whisked aboard a private charter for a quick flight, ultimately boarding a boat that provides a blue watercolor spectacle until your arrival at this magical island.

White sand beaches, coral reefs, and lush greenery beckon visitors to Petit St. Vincent. One- or two-bedroom stone cottages are dispersed across various spots of the island, with some right on the beach, where guests will be greeted by bountiful marine life. Your mobile meditation app is not required for slowing your pace here, as you are always a mini-moke ride away from a Hawaiian lomi-lomi massage with four hands.

Spice Island Beach Resort—Grenada

A resort pool next to a beach shoreline.
A family-run property with a focus on individual happiness, Spice Island is a shining example of Caribbean hospitality. Spice Island

Dreaming of soaking up the sun at a family-run, Six-Star Diamond Award recipient in Grenada? Spice Island Beach Resort is set right on Grand Anse Beach, the most beautiful slice of paradise on this off-the-radar island. Here, refined suites rest along the sand, allowing guests instant access to the stunning water while enjoying unparalleled amenities, including especially creative gastronomy.

Also boasting one of the most devoted staffs in the Caribbean, this resort is well-known for exceeding expectations. Janelle Hopkin, president and managing director of Spice Island Beach Resort, recently recalled to us the legacy her late father established and how she will keep it going.

“Sir Royston, my father, was a giant of a man,” she explains. “The warmth and personal touches of his legacy will remain embedded in the DNA of our resort’s highly acclaimed sense of casual, Caribbean chic. He was renowned for being a leader, a trailblazer and an innovator but for also remaining grounded in Caribbean hospitality—’Quintessentially Caribbean.’ It’s upon this amazing foundation that I will continue to build with the management and team, embracing the modern conveniences of the 21st century and firmly securing our position as a premier resort destination in Grenada and the wider region, while retaining the charm and personality that has made it famous.”

It is a no-brainer why loyal guests from around the world are so impatient when it comes to arriving at Maurice Bishop International Airport again. Us, too.

Mandarin Oriental
A private stretch of sand on Godahl Beach is just the beginning of the incredible offerings at Mandarin Oriental in Canouan. Mandarin Oriental

When we get caught up in the amazing decadence and unparalleled luxury offered by private island resorts in truly exotic and tropical locations like the Maldives and Fiji, we tend to forget that the Caribbean has some hidden gems that often save us travel time and money. Even the busiest islands that are packed with tourist spots are home to unheralded “secret” hotels and resorts that the savvier travelers among us don’t want the rest of the world to discover.

Just like those bucket list properties located halfway across the world, these under-the-radar Caribbean resorts also boast incredible spas, fantastic pools, amazing beaches and even world class golf courses. And they’re also available for private buyouts, which means guests can have each resort all to themselves. Privacy won’t come cheap, but you’ll see that staying at these properties is worth every penny.

Mandarin Oriental, Canouan—St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Mandarin Oriental
Visiting Mandarin Oriental, Canouan, is already an amazing experience, but having free reign of the resort? Beyond our wildest dreams. Mandarin Oriental

Getting to Canouan isn’t easy, which is why this small island in the Grenadines is a slice of paradise typically reserved for celebrities or people who want to feel like stars. Even without a resort buyout, this is a destination that feels ultra-exclusive, from private jet transfers to wide-open, pristine beaches that have never known the crowds of the Caribbean’s most popular locations. At the heart of it all is Mandarin Oriental, Canouan, which sits on beautiful Godahl Beach and offers myriad amenities and adventures that make it a truly ideal Caribbean buyout experience.

With 26 suites and 13 villas, this resort—the only Mandarin Oriental property in the Caribbean—offers a buyout that is fit for an extended family gathering or ultimate dream destination wedding. Think about it: luxury accommodations for everyone, four restaurants and bars, full use of the spa and fitness center and a private stretch of sand that will fill an Instagram feed with jaw-dropping selfies for weeks after the trip is over. That’s usually enough for most people, but there’s also a world-class, Jim Fazio-designed 18-hole golf course, access to great reefs for snorkeling and diving and guided hikes of Mount Royal.

But the one feature that makes a buyout at Mandarin Oriental, Canouan, not only ideal for the social distancing era but so intimate and special for meaningful events is the Castaway experience, which takes guests away from the resort to a setting that will deliver the meal of a lifetime. Newlyweds can toast champagne on a boat for breakfast, or dad can celebrate his 70th birthday with a BBQ dinner and sunset for him and his closest loved ones. The concepts are creative, and the sky is the limit.

Royalton Antigua—Deep Bay, Antigua

Royalton Antigua
Overwater bungalows are a rarity in the Caribbean, but Royalton Antigua thoroughly captures the magic and luxury guests expect from the experience. Royalton Resorts

Set to reopen in November, Royalton Antigua brings the romance and style of the South Pacific and Indian Ocean to this haven for all-inclusive Caribbean luxury. Most notably, the Diamond Club’s Chairman Overwater Bungalows take a dream vacation concept and cut out the hard part of having to spend a day on an airplane, all while maximizing the aspects that make these accommodations so highly sought after. Private butler service, a swim-out infinity plunge pool, overwater hammock—this is the best way to experience Deep Bay.

Royalton Antigua’s buyout package is focused on exclusivity and extreme privacy, as guests will be pampered from the airport transfer and direct check-in to the very last moment of their stay. All the while, a personal concierge will be standing by to make sure every beautiful aspect of Deep Bay, from the nearby beach of the same name to Fort Barrington National Park, is enjoyed.

(Please refer to the Antigua and Barbuda travel advisory and Royalton Antigua’s Covid-19 policy before finalizing any plans.)

Caerula Mar Club—South Andros, Bahamas

If this lavish resort looks familiar, it is because it was featured on HGTV’s Renovation Island, which showcased the efforts of Bryan and Sarah Baemler in breathing new life into this previously abandoned property. Caerula Mar Club isn’t a sprawling resort, but it doesn’t skimp on the amenities that guests expect from a luxury property, and therefore the experience is as intimate as it is dynamic. A private buyout package allows guests to enjoy an extraordinary tropical dream vacation with all the convenience of a quick trip to the Bahamas.

Having originally opened in February, Caerula Mar Club will reopen for individual bookings on October 24, but buyouts are available now. Still new to Caribbean travelers, this resort has drawn quick praise for its simple excellence, and with 18 clubhouse suites and six villas, it can host as many as 56 guests for a thrilling affair. From bike tours of Andros and relaxing spa sessions to private helicopter tours and blue hole cave diving, all of the exclusive excitement will capped off by a nightly dinner menu that is never the same.

(Please refer to the latest travel advisories from the Bahamas as well as the Caerula Mar Club’s Covid-19 policy before finalizing any travel plans.)

Baoase Luxury Resort—Willemstad, Curaçao

Baoase Luxury Resort
If your group books a buyout package at this resort, make sure to call dibs on a room with a private plunge pool. Baoase Luxury Resort

Inspired by the Balinese but standing on its own as a truly distinct and breathtaking property, Baoase Luxury Resort is Curaçao’s only five-star resort, which means expectations should be high. A favorite destination for A-listers—you might recognize the resort from Gabrielle Union’s Instagram feed—this resort relies on the little details for delivering an unforgettable experience.

With 23 rooms, suites and villas, the buyout package offered here is as exclusive as it gets, with a three-night minimum and a price tag that’ll certainly widen the eyes. But, yes, it’s so worth it. Up to 78 guests can stay in the various tropical pool villas, beachfront pool suites and private pool villas, and making this an amazing choice for a destination wedding is the master villa; however, no guest will be displeased by any of the unique room styles.

Outside, an infinity pool offers mesmerizing views of the Caribbean Sea, while a nearby reef provides underwater adventure in between lounging on the private beach and being spoiled by private butlers.

(Please refer to the latest travel advisories from Curaçao and Baoase Luxury Resort’s Covid-19 policy before finalizing travel plans.)

Royalton CHIC Punta Cana—Dominican Republic

CHIC Mansion
The pool at the CHIC Mansion is a perfect private gathering spot on a small group getaway. Royalton Resorts

Reopening on October 1, Royalton CHIC Punta Cana is an all-inclusive resort that is all about style, but the buyout package here focuses on the property’s truly unique and massive CHIC Mansion. The name says it all, too, as this 11,500-sq. ft. accommodation is basically a resort within a resort, highlighted by six spacious suites and wide-open living spaces that are ideal for small group activities.

What makes the Mansion so great is that it already includes the most important elements of any trip, including round-trip private airport transfers, butler service, private chef, a fully stocked bar and a private pool cabana with an attendant, so guests never have to worry about mingling with crowds. Best of all, the affordable rates make this one of the best options for a quick weekend getaway or a week of exclusivity and convenient, private pampering.

Antigua
Green and blue, gorgeous and serene—Antigua is a Caribbean destination that visitors treat as a home away from home. Shutterstock

Antigua is one of the Caribbean’s most magical islands, and the resorts it is home to are equally magical. This island has a bit of everything, from affordable family-friendly picks to overwater bungalows perfect for honeymooners. Whatever your budget and travel style, Antigua delights.

Hodges Bay Resort

Opening its doors on Antigua’s north shore in November 2018, this upscale, sleek hotel stands out for its private beach, adults-only infinity pool overlooking the ocean—and neighboring Prickly Pear Island—as well as four restaurants, including an open-air tapas lounge. The 78 rooms mix clean, modern style with colorful, bohemian island decor.

We also like that the resort offers a wide variety of room categories, from one-bedroom suites to villas with private pools. Breakfast is included, taken either in your room or at the beachside White Sands restaurant.

Nonsuch Bay Resort

We love the name of this unpretentious getaway on the island’s eastern edge, tucked along the namesake Nonsuch Bay. Here, you’ll find three- and five-room villas, as well as six categories of suites, divided into a family- and an adults-only section. All suites, including the couples-only plunge pool suites, include white-and-natural styling throughout, including the kitchens, which allows guests to save money and time, freeing up more space in the itinerary for adventure.

Nonsuch Bay also has one of the island’s best watersports offerings, including a rental fleet of kayaks, snorkel gear, RS sailing dinghies and keelboats—as well as lessons in kitesurfing and sailing.

Galley Bay Resort and Spa

Galley Bay Resort, an all-inclusive found on Antigua’s northwest side, caters to travelers who love the quiet escapism of nature. This adults-only enclave stretches along a 1-mile beach that remains a nesting site for sea turtles, which is why the resort maintains a low-light restriction in the evening so the animals won’t confuse bright lights for the moon. To further protect marine life and the mellow vibe, no motorized watersports are allowed in the bay.

What is available: sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, tennis, yoga, volleyball, croquet and cooking demos. Come day’s end, retire to one of four room categories, including the premium beachfront suites with sliding doors opening right onto the beach—perfect for a moonlit dip.

Cocobay Resort

This adults-only all-inclusive on Antigua’s west coast is known for its charming pastel cottages, tucked along a hillside and surrounded with vegetation for added privacy. Rooms, available in four categories, feature an updated plantation style—with a hammock on the porch and netting over the beds.

Cocobay offers two restaurants and three bars, but what’s most fun and certainly Instagram-worthy are the floating meals, from breakfast to sushi, served in trays and boats that float in a special private pool available for booking.

The Admiral’s Inn

With the main building dating back to 1788, The Admiral’s Inn, set in Nelson’s Dockyard, offers more history and character than any other island property. Rooms at The Admiral’s Inn are updated and modern, with a mostly white color palette. Shuttered windows open to the harbor and hillside. Note that this hotel does not sit on a beach; rather, it has a pool with sea views.

Another perk: The poolside restaurant, dishing up consistently excellent meals, has a local following. Rates are extremely affordable, making this a solid choice for the traveler who wishes to explore the island and eat at a different restaurant every night.

Hawksbill Hotel

This 111-room, adults-only hotel on Antigua’s west side has a few claims to fame. One, its affordability and classic, timeless appeal. Second, it sits on 37 acres with tennis and watersports and four private beaches. That brings us to the third selling point: this hotel is home to the island’s only clothing-optional beach, which can be a fun bit of escapism for couples—especially honeymooners.

Royalton Antigua Resort and Spa

One of the only vertical hotels on island, the Royalton is unique in offering elevated views of the ocean. Moreover, this property is home to six Chairman overwater bungalows—the only overwater bungalows on the island of Antigua. We like the hammocks that sway over glass floors, allowing guests to fish watch while staying dry and relaxing.

Each unit also comes with its own infinity plunge pool. Best of all, guests can arrange private yoga sessions, cocktail hours, dinners and massages all at their overwater bungalows.

Siboney Beach Club

One of the most affordable picks on island, Siboney Beach Club is for the traveler who wants to explore the island and dine out rather than stay at an all-inclusive. Located on the beach on the northwest side of the island, this getaway offers 30 rooms—12 of which have kitchenettes, letting you save even more money by fixing a few meals in.

St. James Club

This all-inclusive is one of the best picks for families. This hotel sits on a peninsula, with one beach on the Atlantic and one on sheltered Mamora Bay, a cove free from waves. For kids, this means the choice between bigger waves and a calmer ocean experience where paddle boarding, sailing and other watersports are offered.

St. James Club also has its own on-site scuba center—convenient for travelers wanting to explore Antigua’s coral-covered underwater slopes.

Carlisle Bay Antigua

We love the vibe at this elegant, 87-suite all-inclusive property. Styled in whites and neutrals, Carlisle Bay keeps the focus on the natural beauty of the beach and estate. Likewise, the menu at East restaurant, dishing up Japanese, Thai and Indonesian fare, features dishes that let ingredients, like tuna and lemongrass, sing. Of course, Carlisle Bay offers yoga—along with tennis, sailing and other watersports.
