The resort’s views of the water are already spectacular, so why not use the element to make guests feel even better? Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa

A vacation in St. Barth always comes with those sapphire and turquoise Caribbean waters that serve as an instant mood-booster on an island that knows a thing or two about joie de vivre. And now Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa and sister brand Le Barth Villa Rental are offering a few extra ways to take the waters in the name of wellness on your next visit to the toniest island in the French Caribbean.

Janzu and Aquatic Tibetan Sound Healing, the two new healing experiences available to guests, riff on the hotel’s standing partnership with La Mer and its Nordic water therapy offerings by presenting these ancient modalities designed to promote deeper calm and self-connection.

And for all the wellness woo-woo already on the market in St. Barth, these treatments are the first healing practices specifically designed to utilize what’s considered the island’s most powerful element: water.

The Janzu treatment is a “therapeutic psychocorporal experience that embraces the concept of reunion with the water as our origin and essence of life” and is inspired by ancient Shamanic regression techniques. During the process, the body is engaged in guided rhythmic movement through the water that serves to let the mind “completely surrender and ultimately transform.”

Sound lofty? Even if that isn’t the final effect, the feeling of weightlessness and the support of the water will help guide guests toward a state of deepest relaxation. Sound complicated? Rest assured there’s a trained expert guiding people through the entire therapy, leaving them to relax, realign, and work on reharmonizing the mind, spirit, and body.

“This experience delivers a heightened sense of renewal, deeply rooted in presence to one’s self,” explained Grégoire Bosc, Janzu specialist at Le Barthélemy.

The Aquatic Tibetan Bowls by Marine Delfino experience at St. Barth’s Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa.
The Aquatic Tibetan Bowls experience uses sound to help the mind, body, and soul find peace. Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa

For the ultimate water healing experience, consider combining Janzu with the new Aquatic Tibetan Bowls by Marine Delfino experience, which has its origins in Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indian traditions that date back 5,000 years, when indigenous cultures practiced sound therapy.

Bowls are placed atop water surrounding the guest, and the sounds transmitted at deep vibrational frequencies are said to create a vibrational effect on the internal organs and energy systems. Delfino herself administers the practice, which can purportedly reduce anxiety and improve overall mental state.

“Feeling the powerful vibrations of 528 Hz. 660 Hz., for example, through the water allows participants to unlock a new dimension of relaxation that they most likely have never experienced before,” she says.

And the coolest thing about these treatments? The sense of place. When the ocean is calm enough, guests can experience both Janzu and Aquatic Tibetan Sound Healing right in front of the hotel in its Nature Reserve. Alternatively, visitors can partake in the treatments from their private pools, the infinity pool, or at any of the villas with a pool or access to water.

That’s a definitive oui from us.

If ever there was a time to finally book an overwater villa somewhere as amazing as Bora Bora, it’s Valentine’s Day. St. Regis Bora Bora

Can you put a price tag on love? Better yet, can you assign a monetary value to romantic experiences? The easy answer is yes, because many of us have strict travel budgets so everything needs to come at a bargain. But what if you had no limitations and could do anything and go anywhere to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year? That’s the kind of daydreaming that we love.

All you need now is some inspiration. Here are six hotels and resorts that have cultivated exceptionally romantic experiences for Valentine’s Day, but even if it’s too last-minute, keep an eye on these properties—they’re always up to something amazing.

Hotel Barriere Le Carl Gustaf, St. Barth

When I recently visited Hotel Barriere Le Carl Gustaf, I experienced quite a few “you have to be kidding me” moments, but none more than when I stepped through the doors of Villa Diane. With enough sleeping and living space to comfortably fit up to 10 people, it also has the advantage of seclusion through creative design, as anyone who needs a break from the family reunion or wedding festivities can still steal a moment of peace on a private terrace.

But what about two people? In that sense, Villa Diane is like a modern castle, set high above Gustavia with magnificent views of this A-lister’s paradise. Two or 10, there’s pampering to be enjoyed here, and the newest experience from this stunning property includes a private chef and personal butler, in-villa yoga and pilates classes, VIP service to and from the airport, a sunbed at the nearby Shellona Beach Club, and access to the rest of the hotel’s outstanding amenities.

The price? This romantic experience begins at $18,960 per night. If that shattered too many monocles, the hotel is also offering a Valentine’s Day package for stays of three nights or longer that starts at $13,000 and includes a stay in the Junior Suite Terrace Sea View (amazing views and a private plunge pool are included), dinner at Fouquet’s by three-star Michelin Chef Pierre Gagnaire, a 45-minute couples massage, guided hike to Petit Cul de Sac, a sunset catamaran tour of the island’s beautiful beaches, and a 30-minute helicopter “air baptism” over the Caribbean Sea, among other activities.

The St. Regis Bora Bora

Some people think it’s cliché to pop the question on Valentine’s Day, and that might be the case if you’re planning to do it over dessert in the crowded dining room at the local Macaroni Grill. But asking the ultimate question to that special someone with Bora Bora’s Mount Popoti as your backdrop? The only clichés will be the responses from your jealous friends.

Starting at $15,000, this proposal or vow renewal experience includes a five-night stay in a St. Regis Bora Bora overwater villa, a gourmet champagne picnic curated by Chef Nicolas Nguyen of Lagoon by Jean-George Restaurant, a private sunset sail on the Vitamin Sea catamaran (hopefully to celebrate the correct answer), a helicopter tour of this amazing destination, signature canoe breakfast, and a 24-carat gold al fresco couples massage overlooking the resort’s Lagoonarium and Mount Otemanu, among other perks.

I know what you’re thinking: “Who would ever want to leave after such a trip?” Don’t worry, extra nights can be added.

Lovango Resort and Beach Club, St. John

The view from a private glamping tent at Lovango Resort and Beach Club in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.
A private glamping experience allows guests to appreciate the natural beauty of this island. Lovango Resort and Beach Club

When owners Mark and Gwenn Snider first visited this beautiful destination in the U.S. Virgin Islands, they thought they’d found heaven. Now, with creative experiences and myriad fantastic amenities and activities, Lovango Resort and Beach Club is sharing that otherworldly feeling with guests, and all of February will feature a big emphasis on romance.

Couples can book stays of three nights or longer using the code LOVE and enjoy the unique luxury treehouses or glamping tents that will not only make them appreciate the natural beauty, but also add an extra element of seclusion to this private island getaway. Also included is a private cabana for one day, breakfast at the Treetops Lounge, a romantic picnic on Honeymoon Beach (so maybe bring that ring and rehearse a certain question), and a private beach dinner under the majestic clear night sky.

To top it all off, the resort’s mixologist will even craft a personalized cocktail with a couple’s favorite ingredients.

Soneva Jani, Maldives

Valentine’s Day isn’t always about the couple. It can be about the entire family, too. At Soneva Jani, this special day offers something special for travelers of all ages. The couple will, of course, enjoy the floating champagne breakfast in their private pool, but children will the cherish the chance to make special cards and crafts for their parents or friends and family back home. (Grandparents deserve Valentine’s Day treats, too!) Other perks include restorative massages at Soneva Soul and snorkeling the Noonu Atoll, but the dinner options are where things get really interesting and very romantic.

Head to So Engaging for the five-course “Loving Journey Around the World” dinner or indulge in a delicious seafood BBQ at So Primitive. A special Valentine’s Day menu is available at Director’s Cut, which offers guests views of the movie screen at Cinema Paradiso, or the night sky can be the entertainment during a meal at So Starstruck. Still not what you’re looking for? A dinner for two on a private island can be arranged.

VOMO Island Fiji

Valentine’s Day takes place on February 14, but at VOMO Island Fiji, guests will have two months to bask in the romance. Already a haven for couples who want to feel like the only people on Earth, this 225-acre destination is cranking the love up to 11 in February and March with a new offering that not only includes all the resort’s best activities—hiking Mt. Vomo, snorkeling, kayaking, dominating the Par 3 golf course—but three bonus concepts that are all about love.

The toughest part will be choosing between them. Should guests pick the half-day private island picnic on Vomo Lai Lai that is only available to one couple per day, or should they book the beachfront dinner for two at the resort’s legendary stretch of sand? What about the 60-minute couples massage at Kui Spa? All we know is the easiest choice is booking four nights or more, because guests will receive an extra night free.

The Jefferson DC, Washington DC

It’s not the Caribbean, French Polynesia, or the Maldives, but when travel time is a huge concern, you can’t go wrong by simply ditching the passports and heading to a destination that is still rich with history and one particularly creative hotel. The Jefferson DC’s romantic offering includes a stay in the amazing First Lady Suite, which offers top-floor views that’ll make any couple feel like visiting royalty. Especially when beating the cold weather by sitting in front of the fireplace.

In addition to strolls around the city and visiting the landmarks, a couple can enjoy delicious cocktails at Quill, undoubtedly one of the coolest bars in town, before taking a seat at The Bird’s Nest, which is so spectacular in design that people could spend a whole evening enjoying conversation before they realize how much time has passed.

Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf
Set above Gustavia, this hotel is already a crown jewel of St. Barth. Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf

Let’s be perfectly honest—Saint Barthélemy is not what the average traveler imagines when booking a Caribbean getaway. It’s easily the most intimidating destination in this region, at least in terms of reputation. After all, not long before I recently landed at Gustaf III Airport, some guy named Jeff Bezos pulled anchor on his megayacht after spending the holidays here, leaving the magnificently blue waters because they were a little too crowded with other floating palaces.

There are, of course, myriad reasons that St. Barth has long been a stomping ground for A-listers. Howard Hughes probably chose it for the privacy, just as the Kardashians have in recent years. The world’s biggest supermodels, like Chrissy Teigen and Miranda Kerr, undoubtedly dig it for the serenity, with the stunning natural beauty serving as a better backdrop than any Sports Illustrated or Victoria’s Secret photo shoot. Countless couples, from Beyoncé and Jay Z to Leonardo DiCaprio and whomever he’s dating this month, know that few places are as romantic. And Paulina Gretzky most recently proved that the island also knows how to party.

Factor in the armada of 9-figure floating mansions surrounding this 9-square-mile island, and it’s easy to see why John Q. Everyman might not think this is the right destination for his family. Yes, St. Barth is expensive, but that hardly means it is exclusive. And since this is supposedly the era of “Go Big, Spend Big,” there’s no reason this shouldn’t be the island people choose.

The decision on where to stay then boils down to where your family will most feel at home, and the answer is very simple: Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf.

Fall in Love with Diane

Villa Diane
For a family escape or the destination wedding of anyone’s dreams, Villa Diane is nothing short of spectacular. Islands

When it comes to visiting properties throughout the Caribbean, I always focus on the first impression. However, at this hotel, I’m beginning with the aspect that left the biggest impression: Villa Diane. There isn’t a bad accommodation at Le Carl; there isn’t even anything that checks in at less than astounding. But if I am planning the most unforgettable gathering in the entire history of my family tree, it will take place in Villa Diane.

Step out of the hotel’s lobby, glance across the street, and you’ll notice a rather unassuming structure of white walls and a red roof, like most buildings in the harborside town. Inside, however, it is unlike anything else on St. Barth. In fact, few places in the Caribbean will rival this three-story mansion. From the glamorous infinity pool to the subtle tropical wallpaper that frames the magnificent woodwork of the raised ceilings, there’s hardly a detail within the three suites that won’t elicit impressed and even jealous gasps.

The interior of Villa Diane boasts creative subtle décor that feels luxurious yet laidback. Islands

But it was in the spacious, open-floor dining and living area, with its impeccable staging, that I imagined my own family raising toasts to my niece’s high school graduation or in-laws’ 50th wedding anniversary. The kids splashing in the pool while the adults sip the resort’s signature cocktails on the sprawling deck, after we were all spoiled by a custom meal from a Le Carl chef, made entirely in Villa Diane’s private kitchen. If there’s a textbook definition of “the good life,” it will undoubtedly be rewritten after a week or two in this livable masterpiece.

The Outside Looking In

deck
Even on an island known for opulence and excess, this hotel keeps guests grounded by feeling like a home away from home. Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf

Planning for this visit, I secretly worried that I wouldn’t be accepted on St. Barth. That my casual style of Seavees and Linksoul would be scoffed at and even pooh-poohed by the regulars. That the two gentlemen smoking hand-rolled cigars and watching airplanes land as if they were vetting passengers would tell me, “Au revoir, monsieur, return from whence you came!” That even my pilot’s monocle would shatter as he turned us around to deliver me back to Princess Juliana International Airport on St. Maarten.

A bigger fool I could not be.

There’s an authentic friendliness to St. Barth that I can only describe as automatic. From the customs agent to the drivers waving pedestrians across the street from their Land Rover Defenders, there wasn’t a scowl, frown, or mildly pouty lip anywhere on the island. But even Hercule Poirot wouldn’t need more than a chapter to deduce that it’s because everyone here realizes how lucky he or she is to be living in such a small, idyllic paradise.

The best example is the impossibly happy Miguel Danet, a local who operates St. Barth Sailor, which offers full- or half-day trips, as well as a sunset catamaran tour that might as well be required by law. His smile was infectious and almost as bright as the sun’s glare off the calm waters we cruised through en route to snapping a few photos of Colombier Beach. Why so happy? Why not! It’s like an island-wide mantra, or maybe even a mandate.

Le Carl’s suite
Warm touches are abound in Le Carl’s suites, as the staff excels at spoiling guests. Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf

And that’s also evident as soon as you walk through the doors at Le Carl, where you’re greeted by a seemingly endless chain of people who are genuinely concerned with each guest’s happiness and satisfaction. Engage in conversation and you’re bound to hear a life story, or at least the tale of how that person ended up on St. Barth. (Who wouldn’t brag a little?) The feeling will be mutual, too, because the primary goal is to make it seem like each guest is the only guest.

A more difficult task is tough to imagine, but there’s a very good reason why this hotel’s staff makes it seem effortless.

The Hardest Job in St. Barth

Shell Beach
Shell Beach is so well-hidden that it shouldn’t surprise anyone to spot a yacht anchored there for privacy or a quick bite at Shellona. Islands

After watching Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf’s general manager Andrei Mocanu move from table to table in the phenomenal on-site restaurant Fouquet’s, greeting guests by name and catching up as if he’s an old friend, I asked if his job is as difficult as it seems. He laughed and instead suggested that he’s the luckiest person on St. Barth. Captain Obvious? Maybe. But his humble nature is matched only by his desire to deliver even more to those guests.

In a restaurant where cocktails are topped off with edible perfumes—a grapefruit fragrance pushes a simple paloma to new heights—and the chef’s seared seabass with coconut foam almost makes me forget about the previous night’s mouth-watering wagyu, I wondered aloud, “What could possibly be next?” Mocanu tells me he’d like to make the spa a little bigger, which elicits a chuckle from me, because only two hours earlier I felt like I’d melted in Spa Diane Barrière.

FOUQUET'S SAINT-BARTH
The only thing better than the amazing food is enjoying it while watching St. Barth’s epic sunset from the best seats on the island. Islands

The very idea of more at Le Carl should send shivers across the island. Gustavia’s best shops are already within walking distance, but electric bikes or even a Mini Cooper is available for those who want to explore in style. And on an island that doesn’t have many beaches, this hotel offers guests access to the tiny yet spectacular Shell Beach, just a short jaunt down the hill. If Fouquet’s hasn’t spoiled them enough, visitors will grab lunch—surf, turf, and some special treats—and afternoon cocktails at Shellona, which overlooks the water and (probably) several yachts that have anchored for the afternoon.

Whatever is next at this resort will undoubtedly exceed our wildest expectations, and that’s exactly what St. Barth’s best properties should do. Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf has seen a steady stream of guests checking in since opening its doors, and that’s impressive given the circumstances. Now that the island is back in full swing, it’s only a matter of time before it’s impossible for even Derek Jeter to book a room.

But no matter the guests, where they come from, or how they got there, this staff will be standing by to make every person feel at home. Not because they have to, but because they know just how special it is to be there.

Le Toiny
From the moment guests arrive, they will experience an incredible sense of calm and Caribbean bliss. Le Toiny

The hardest thing about choosing to stay at fabulous Le Toiny is probably pronouncing the name: Le Twa-knee. However, as soon as guests step foot inside this magnificent hilltop hotel, it’s a name they won’t soon forget. And with its recent reopening, travelers from all over the world should want to find out for themselves what makes this property so remarkable—all while rubbing elbows with return visitors who have known all along.

Set on 17 acres and overlooking the bay and beach from which it draws the moniker, Le Toiny is a stylish hideaway that is packed with spoils. First and foremost, guests will instantly find serenity and draw inspiration from the stunning views of the water and this charming island. But the hotel’s design and décor were also conceived to embrace the surrounding natural beauty and create a sense of Caribbean calm from the lobby to each of the 22 suites.

Duplex Spirit Suite
The second-floor bedroom of the Duplex Spirit Suite enhances the already remarkable views. Le Toiny

Each style of suite will entice certain types of travelers, but they all offer the same level of luxurious comfort, with ample living space, a private terrace, and heated pool. For example, at 600 sq. ft., the Junior Suite is an ideal setting for a couple seeking a simple escape for exploring the island and enjoying the romantic sunset, while the Duplex Spirit Suite boasts 1,033 sq. ft. spread across two floors. Simply put, there’s no such thing as a wrong choice.

Villa Nureyev
Villa Nureyev is a fascinating accommodation that blends luxurious seclusion with rich island history. Le Toiny

Of course, there’s also the option to go above and well beyond anyone’s wildest family vacation dreams. Built in 1970 by legendary Russian dancer Rudolph Nureyev, Villa Nureyev is located just two minutes from Le Toiny and offers arguably the most alluring setting on the island. Guests will enjoy more than 4,000 sq. ft. of interior space, which includes four bedrooms (two master suites), but most of the stay will undoubtedly be spent appreciating the 6,000 sq. ft. of exterior space that offers a phenomenal terrace, private pool, and jacuzzi.

Beach Club
Guests will undoubtedly spend entire days at the Beach Club. Le Toiny

If this hotel is known for one aspect that supersedes all others, it is the dining experience. Chef Brenton Styles has cultivated an exceptional culinary program at Le Toiny Restaurant, as guests will be treated to rotating menus that offer mouth-watering delights like Lobster Emulsion, the signature Truffle Risoni, and Snake River Wagyu Bavette. And only the setting changes when visitors head down to the Beach Club for a menu that boasts classic seaside fare that will likely rank this among the best lunches they’ve ever had.

Making things even easier on guests is the fact that a 7-night experience includes economy airfare from cities like New York City, Newark, Washington D.C., and Miami (other options are available), as well as transfers from St. Maarten. And anyone who has ever visited St. Barth knows that the excitement begins as soon as the airplane approaches Gustaf III Airport. It is simply maximized once the transportation arrives at Le Toiny.

Mango Mai Tai
Everyone loves to “discover” a creative cocktail like the Mango Mai Tai at Sandals Royal Bahamian. Sandals Royal Bahamian

If the last two years have shown us anything, it’s that a lot of travelers are going to be in for huge surprises when they return to their favorite Caribbean islands. So many properties and businesses have taken time and poured considerable resources into renovations and expansions, which means there are even more options for incredible vacations across every island.

And when it comes to food and drinks, many of these places don’t get the credit they deserve for their ingenuity in developing unique menus that are jam-packed with concoctions that are as fun to look at as they are to eat and sip. Best of all, local culture, history, and ingredients play a huge role in all of this, so it can be as educational as it is delicious.

Need some help loading your itineraries? Here are nine Caribbean bars that are already the talk of the town. Some we have recently visited, and some, well, we might just be sitting on the bar stool next to you, trying our first treat. Either way, it’s time to be excited.

Mr. B’s Bar, Sandals Royal Bahamian

Guava Bubbles
The benefit of ordering a drink as pretty as the Guava Bubbles is it looks nice in every photo. Sandals Royal Bahamian

Speaking of major renovations, Sandals Royal Bahamian is ready to show off the astounding results of a $55 million makeover, and while it’s not the main draw, the new Mr. B’s Bar is going to mean a lot to this brand’s immensely loyal guests. Mr. B is, of course, the late Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the visionary who turned two run-down Jamaican hotels into an all-inclusive empire built on surpassing a guest’s every expectation.

Adorned with old photos of Stewart, this modern yet unmistakably Caribbean hangout showcases a variety of incredible new cocktails with delightful names, from the Guava Bubbles (above) to the Banana Bread Old Fashioned. But no visit will be complete without Mr. B’s Old Fashioned, which is infused with local coffee bitters. It’s perfect for toasting the man, the myth, and the legend.

And for cocktails with a view, venture outdoors to Sandals Royal Bahamian’s new Bar at Coconut Grove, serving up cocktails as colorful as they are tropical, like the Dragon in the Coconut and Mango Mai Tai (top).

Zala Gastro Lounge, Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort

zala cocktail
Colorful, creative cocktails like the Par’i Mondi make this lobby bar a very popular spot. Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort

To say that Curaçao’s culinary scene is booming would be an understatement—the food here has always been amazing. Between the spectacular Truk’i Pans, the swaggerific restaurants popping up throughout downtown Willemstad, and even the iguana soup at Immanuel Place, a visitor could spend weeks enjoying the best meals without repeating venues. So, it says a lot that Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort’s Zala Gastro Lounge is viewed by visitors and locals as a place to be.

If the purpose for swinging by is simply to enjoy a few cocktails before hitting the town, people will be thrilled by the delicious simplicity of the Fresku and Par’i Mondi cocktails—and they’ll also love the showmanship that comes with ordering a Smokey Jack or Den Numbia. But don’t sleep on the food. This an island that needs to be visited with a healthy appetite, because the Pollo Mechada Arepitas and Crispy Brussel Sprouts are the kinds of bar snacks that’ll change a person’s expectations of appetizers forever.

Bklyn, Curaçao

Brooklyn Rumble
No sleep til Brooklyn and don’t sleep on this Bklyn, where guests can sip a Brooklyn Rumble while admiring the stellar wall art. Islands

Downtown Willemstad’s restaurant scene deserves its own feature story (and will have it very soon) because the efforts and creations of the island’s brightest young minds cannot be overstated, especially as they persevered through multiple lockdowns. One shining example is the uber-hip Bkyln, for which the owner draws inspiration from New York City’s hip-hop and rap culture in everything from the cocktails to the wallpaper (designed by Mike D of the Beastie Boys and available on Flavor Paper).

Every cocktail on this menu should be tried, but for visitors who love the culture vibes, the obvious choices are the Brooklyn Rumble and especially the Lil’ Kim. Don’t let the name of the latter fool you—just like the pint-sized rapper, this cocktail packs a mean punch. And it pairs oh-so-well with the magnificent bao buns and pan ku patu.

Shellona, St. Barth

skirt steak
Beware the Captain Barbosa cocktail, as this bourbon and cucumber delight is deceptively refreshing. Islands

There isn’t an amenity, experience, or square inch of Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf that disappoints, and that certainly includes Fouquet’s, the on-site restaurant and bar, which is one of the best places for a cocktail on an island that constantly redefines extravagance. If it’s not the view or the amazing food, it’s the edible perfume that is sprayed on top of the drink for an extra special flavor enhancer.

But the other spot that must be visited is a short walk down the hill, right beside the intimate Shell Beach. In fact, Shellona is named for its ideal location, and it is also where hotel guests can stop in for arguably the most creative cocktails on St. Barth. Bold flavors highlight the signature selections on this awesome menu, and each drink pairs oh so well with everything from the mini mahi mahi tacos to the mouth-watering chimichurri steak.

Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, St. Maarten

Dutch Blonde
Enjoy a round of the Caribbean’s best beer while enjoying a beach breeze or trying to solve the clues to bring about a mobster’s demise. Islands

Cocktails aren’t for everyone, and sometimes a weary traveler just wants a delicious beer with views for days. In that case, Dutch Blonde Beach Bar is not only located on stunning Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg, but it also serves the best beer in the Caribbean. Dutch Blonde Ale earned that distinction when it was awarded a silver medal at the 2021 London Beer Competition, besting all other entries from this tropical region. But if you need our expert opinion: it is absolutely delicious.

The food is also fantastic, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg here. Owner and founder Sunil Vaswani is one of the island’s most enthusiastic and optimistic creators, so he doesn’t just want to serve great beer—he wants to provide experiences. Right now, that includes St. Maarten’s first and only escape room (at which I hold the record time) that will soon expand with new themes, and it’ll eventually be joined by a speakeasy. Big things are happening here.

Caribar, Caribe Hilton Puerto Rico

caribar
The birthplace of the piña colada should be on every cocktail lover’s travel wish list. Caribe Hilton

Almost 70 years ago, a bartender named Ramón “Monchito” Marrero messed with some cocktail ingredients and inadvertently became a hospitality G.O.A.T. His new welcome beverage for the Caribe Hilton was non-alcoholic, but it was the foundation of what would become one of the most beloved cocktails ever made: the piña colada. Naturally, the history of the drink alone makes the hotel’s Caribar one of the island’s must-visit establishments.

Obviously, there are other drinks to enjoy here, but anyone who loves to experience local culture and history will appreciate the chance to taste the evolution of the piña colada. And it’s not just at this hotel. The great location means it’s just minutes from some of Old San Juan’s best bars and restaurants, where bright young minds are also serving up new twists on the classic cocktail.

Monkey Business, Resorts World Bimini

cocktails and seafood
Cold cocktails and fresh seafood is everyone’s favorite form of monkeying around. Resorts World Bimini

Between establishments like Stuart’s (a go-to for conch and lobster) and Edith’s Pizza (where lobster is an amazing pie topping), Bimini is one of the more underrated spots for Bahamian cuisine. That makes Resorts World Bimini an ideal base for exploring and appreciating the regional perks, but don’t forget to enjoy one of the best spots at this sprawling property: the Monkey Business rooftop bar.

Of course, it’s impossible to skip when it’s located right next to the rooftop infinity pool, which boasts phenomenal panoramic views of Bimini Bay. This is best done while enjoying the bar’s signature cocktail, the rum-and-fruit-juice Shark Tooth, and a big plate of loaded jerk chicken fries.

Tiki and Co., Bonaire

tiki and co
Step inside for a lesson in local culture and incredibly creative cocktails. Elliott Howell

Fun fact: Bonaire isn’t just for cruise ships and divers. Like its neighbor Curaçao, Bonaire is also experiencing a culinary renaissance, and the coolest spot on the island might just be Tiki and Co. The tropical glassware alone makes it worth the visit, as travelers don’t find too many opportunities to drink from skulls of various sizes and artistic stylings.

Sir Eddy Trenidad returned home to Bonaire to open this bar and make it a cultural institution, teaching guests about his island as they enjoy epic cocktails like the Pandan Banana Colada, Stairway to Ku, and Oaxacan ‘n Talking. And if all goes to plan, his bar will crack the list of the 100 best in the world, proving to everyone that Bonaire is the real deal.

Sky Bar, Sandals Royal Barbados

Guests won’t want to leave the infinity pool for long, but it’s worth it. Sandals Royal Barbados

One more round for Mr. B! Not only does this new Sky Bar at Sandals Royal Barbados offer the best views of the St. Lawrence Gap, but it is also a fantastic place to enjoy Sandals’ new 40th anniversary cocktail list. A new twist on a classic drink is nothing mind blowing, but everyone will love having the chance to sip the old and new, side by side, to see just how far we’ve come in terms of creativity.

Nevis
A smaller Caribbean island like Nevis feels like a kingdom when visitors stay in villas. Four Seasons Resort Nevis

Whether you’re looking to escape for a relaxing week with friends or much-needed fun in the sun with your family, a spacious private villa is an ideal way to connect with those you love as you enjoy the Caribbean. Better yet, what if that villa offered access to resort amenities, such as on-site restaurants, spas and watersports?

Resort-based villas throughout the Caribbean range from pocketbook-friendly to five-star luxurious and feature amenities many independent, stand-alone villas do not. Here are a dozen top resort-based villa accommodations on eight popular islands.

ACOYA Curacao Resort, Villas and Spa

ACOYA resort
The ability to retreat to your own villa after a day of exploring is an understated joy. ACOYA Curacao Resort, Villas and Spa

Conveniently located just 10 minutes from Willemstad’s photogenic Queen Emma Bridge but surrounded by lush landscaping and built around a lake, ACOYA Curaçao Resort, Villas and Spa offers upscale seclusion in a relaxed village-like setting with a mix of hotel rooms and spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom villas.

Each is set amid tropical garden and features a patio, full kitchen and an option to book an all-inclusive package (three meals a day plus snacks). Some villas also have a private plunge pool. On-site amenities at the family-friendly resort include three restaurants, a large pool with dedicated pool bar, a full-service spa and salon, and a water sports and dive center.

Delfins Beach Resort, Bonaire

Delfins Beach Resort
Modern style meets classic Caribbean natural beauty. Delfins Beach Resort

Bonaire has always been a top dive spot, but with the debut of 13 contemporary luxury villas set on a golden-sand beach, newcomer Delfins Beach Resort offers appealing options for a family or group vacation. Each villa—with either three or four bedrooms, all with their own bathroom—is edged with lush green gardens and palm trees and features a modern kitchen and airy beach-chic décor. Some also have a private pool.

Villa guests are welcome to enjoy amenities at the resort (which also offers 148 apartments), including an expansive pool, a five-star dive center and the property’s al fresco restaurant, Brass Boer, whose owner, Jonnie Boer, is a renowned Michelin-starred chef.

Coral Beach Club, St. Maarten

Coral Beach Club
St. Maarten is the kind of place that already makes travelers feel like they’re home, so a villa is a great bonus. Coral Beach Club

The colorful Dutch island of St. Maarten is a convenient spot for a friends getaway or family reunion and Coral Beach Club, located next to its sister property, Oyster Bay Beach Resort, and directly across from the Oyster Pond marina, offers 24 condo-style beachfront villas and townhomes with two-, three- or four-bedrooms—allowing for a budget-friendly stay with plenty of privacy.

The villas’ backyards are steps from white-sand Oyster Beach and it’s just a 10-minute drive to the capital, Phillipsburg, where duty-free shopping and eclectic dining await. The villas all have private pools, full-size kitchens (both indoor and outdoor) and complete access to the neighboring Oyster Bay Beach Resort’s amenities, which include an infinity pool, spa, fitness center, restaurant and bar.

Villas at Simpson Bay Resort, St. Maarten

Simpson Bay Resort
For secluded group adventures, a private beach is always a nice touch. Simpson Bay Resort

There are 83 condo-style villas set amid the landscaped grounds of St. Maarten’s Simpson Bay Resort, Marina & Spa, which also has 272 resort suites. The Villas at Simpson Bay, all renovated in 2020 and accommodating two to six guests in suite and one- or two-bedroom floor plans, offer access to a sheltered private beach and an extensive pool area, creating a tranquil and lush waterfront setting for relaxing and socializing.

The sprawling Simpson Bay Resort is home to six restaurants, a spa, a fitness center, numerous shops, AquaMania Adventures (a water excursion provider), Thrifty Car Rental, a casino and more.

Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Jamaica

Round Hill Hotel and Villas
These villas have been occupied by some extremely famous people, so why not follow in their footsteps? Round Hill Hotel and Villas

Welcoming Jamaica-loving sun-seekers since 1953, 110-acre Round Hill Resort and Villas in Montego Bay is known for its 26 private villas, most located on a lushly landscaped hillside overlooking the sea and each featuring its own Caribbean-style design with a blend of retro-romantic and modern elements. Some come with storied histories (JFK and Jackie stayed in Villa 10, Noel Coward and Errol Flynn in Villa 3, and designer Ralph Lauren, who decorated the resort’s 36 Pineapple House guestrooms, currently owns a villa here).

They range from two to six bedrooms (the exclusive Estate Villa can accommodate up to 14 guests), and feature private pools, spectacular views and dedicated staff. Villa guests can enjoy their privacy or the entire atmospheric resort, with amenities that include two restaurants, bars, a spa and infinity pool.

Private Pool Villas at Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel, Anguilla

Cap Juluca
It’s quite obvious to see why this property is extremely popular. Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel

Set on one of the most photogenic white-sand beaches in the Caribbean, Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel, has long lured travelers seeking an escape that combines five-star service and amenities with ultimate privacy. The property’s distinctive white Moorish-style architecture is amplified in its villa accommodations, which range from 1,700 to 5,500 square feet and from Beachfront Plunge Pool Two-Bedroom Casitas to Beachfront Three- or Five-Bedroom Pool Villas—all featuring distinctive interior design, spacious indoor-outdoor bathrooms, private kitchens, direct beach access and a 24-hour villa host.

The resort also has four restaurants, plus private dining options, a spa, tennis courts and watersports.

Villas at Hotel Le Toiny, St. Barth

Hotel Le Toiny
St. Barth is undoubtedly a destination for sophisticated travelers, and these villas fit the bill. Hotel Le Toiny

New at Hotel Le Toiny, the chic hillside boutique hotel on St. Barth, Villa Over the Ocean is a 7,000-square-foot, four-bedroom accommodation that features a 900-square-foot heated pool with an adjacent bar area and gazebo offering splendid views. To be closer to the vivid blue sea, guests can book the unique, four-bedroom Villa Nureyev, constructed in 1970 by the famed Russian dancer with a floating deck surrounded by the ocean. It is located right on the sand near the resort’s Beach Club.

Like guests in the 22 smaller Villa Suites, clustered on a hillside, those staying in both larger villas have access to the property’s award-winning restaurant, stunning infinity pool, private beach club, fitness center and spa.

Altamer’s Blue Diamond Villa, Anguilla

Blue Diamond Villa
When the entire family desires a sense of tropical royalty, this Diamond does it all. Altamer

Altamer’s palatial, 13,000-square-foot Blue Diamond Villa recently celebrated its grand reopening after a renovation that updated its interiors, including the appliances in the chef’s kitchen. Up to 11 guests can sleep in the five-bedroom, seven bath villa and enjoy a beachfront pool and hot tub, an entertainment area, movie theater and private fitness center along with 30 pieces of contemporary art.

While not located within a resort complex, Altamer’s five-star amenities include complimentary beer, wine and select spirits, daily continental breakfast, butler service, laundry and turndown, watersports equipment and tennis and basketball courts.

Villas at Palm Island Resort, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Palm Island Resort
When travelers simply want to wake up and put their toes in the sand, this is the place to do it. Palm Island Resort

For that private-island experience that truly feels private, Palm Island Resort has two villas located away from the main resort area, each overlooking the sea on either side of the 135-acre island, and a new two-bedroom villa set to open in the spring. Sea Feathers is set right on the sand and features three bedrooms with airy contemporary décor, while Southern Cross is a two-bedroom villa elevated atop scenic cliffs with an infinity pool and access to a nearby beach.

Both come with a golf cart for easy transport to the resort’s beachfront social heart with its restaurant and watersports. Palm Island, which welcomes guests ages 16 and older, is priced on an all-inclusive basis.

Villas at Four Seasons Resort Nevis

Four Seasons Resort Nevis cabana
Take a stroll from the villa here and keep the privacy going with a picturesque beach cabana. Four Seasons Resort Nevis

Gorgeous golf greens and playful green vervet monkeys are two of the atmospheric perks of a villa stay at the 350-acre, family-friendly Four Seasons Resort Nevis. The property’s family-friendly villas all feature private pools and are most are located on the verdant slopes of Nevis Peak while a few are close to the beach. There are two Plunge Pool Studios, each a one-bedroom cottage nestled amid greenery on the lower slopes, and four Sunset Hill Villas with two-to-five bedrooms, located at higher elevations.

Two Pinney’s Beach Villas feature three and four bedrooms and are a short walk from the beach, while eight Palm Grove Villas have two to six bedrooms and are set around the golf course. Four Seasons Resort Nevis also has four showpiece Estate Homes, ranging from 2,905 to 7,025 square feet—the largest sleeps 10 adults and eight children.

Azzurra Castle at Mount Cinnamon Hotel and Beach Club, Grenada

Mount Cinnamon Hotel
One of the largest accommodations anywhere in the Caribbean, calling this anything but a castle would be misleading. Mount Cinnamon Hotel and Beach Club

And now for something entirely different. Azzurra Castle at Mount Cinnamon Hotel and Beach Club is easily one of the most unique and charming accommodations you’ll find anywhere in the Caribbean. As spacious as it is colorful, it will have guests spending hours after check-in, taking pictures of every nook and cranny, as each room is more fascinating and creative than the next.

At more than 25,000 square feet, guests can get lost in this castle. Up to a dozen friends or family members can stay in the six bedrooms, and they’ll enjoy incredible meals from the on-site cook in two dining areas before retiring to the cinema room for movie night or the small beach for fun under the stars.

Villa Diane, Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf, St. Barth

Floating breakfast
Floating breakfast in the infinity pool is just one of many spoils here. Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf

This newer and extremely popular hotel already sits above Gustavia like a miniature kingdom, and that would make Villa Diane the magnificent castle. This property is already extremely proud of its insanely great views of the island and her surrounding waters, but until a guest has ascended the winding stairs to the top floor’s stylish, spacious living area, no one can truly understand just how picture perfect an experience can be in this unparalleled accommodation.

With five rooms—three of which are suites—this is an ideal situation for the destination wedding of a couple’s dreams. As many as 12 guests will sleep and relax comfortably, with the sprawling patios begging everyone to enjoy the St. Barth sun until it sets, which is another beautiful perk. A hidden kitchen is where one of the resort’s talented chefs will create amazing meals, all while the party lounges in the cherry on top infinity pool.

Grand Fond Beach
St. Barth’s natural pools of Grand Fond Beach must be visited and getting there is half the fun. Jeanine Barone

Sure, the Caribbean conjures peaceful images of gentle breezes that rustle palm fronds and golden beaches where umbrella drinks are ubiquitous. But a Caribbean getaway that involves hiking may not be quite so laid-back. After all, given that the topography of so many of these idyllic islands is shaped by volcanic activity, it’s no wonder that the trails lacing the rugged landscape might require grabbing onto vines, or snagging exposed roots just to remain upright.

These sorts of adventures might satisfy thrill seekers, but here are seven picturesque paths for those who prefer an experience that’s as chill as the calm Caribbean vibe.

Golden Rock Nature Trail—Nevis

nevis golden rock
There’s a lot to see and learn about on this hike, so having a guide is very helpful. Jeanine Barone

Beginning on the property of a former sugar cane plantation, now the upscale Golden Rock Inn, this short track enwraps hikers in an abundance of foliage. You might want to book a guide (Sunrise Tours), who can point out and discuss the common usage of numerous fruit trees, herbs and other plants, such as bitter orange (used to make marmalade) and soursop (it’s a treatment for fever).

Overhead, vervet monkeys dart among the tree branches, and, along the way, two wee villages (Malli Ban and Stonyhill) are populated with simple chattel dwellings. Through openings in the foliage, you might spot the island’s signature sight, Nevis Peak, that towers over 3,000 feet, though it is often shrouded in clouds. Once you enter the rainforest, the flora grows denser, with aerial roots dangling like a fine curtain.

Katouche Valley Hiking Trail—Anguilla

Anguilla
Anguilla’s natural beauty is on full display throughout this journey. Jeanine Barone

Set on a private estate—and requiring visitors to sign up for a trek with Katouche Tours—this 1.5-mile flat trail is believed to have been created either by the indigenous peoples or the slaves who worked at the old plantation. The dense forest is rich in a variety of plant species, from white cedar, Anguilla’s national tree, to delicate tree orchids.

One captivating sight is Cavannagh Cave, a spacious, 30-foot-high cavern with an immense fig tree puncturing the roof, and where fruit- and insect-eating bats can be observed (and heard). Hikers will delight in the colorful butterflies fluttering about as well as the green throated Caribbean hummingbirds and other birds found along this path that terminates on the pristine sands of Katouche Bay Beach.

Signal Hill Hike—Antigua

Signal Hill
The view from Signal Hill is always breathtaking, especially when the neighboring islands are visible. Jeanine Barone

This two-hour, round-trip hike from Wallings Dam isn’t flat, but the mostly gentle climb to the island’s second highest point (1,200 feet) is worth the effort for the panoramic views. The route takes its name from the time (during the British occupation) when flags in different locations would signal to Fort James and Fort George, two major defensive outposts, if an enemy ship entered the harbor.

The route alternates between rainforest where tall mahogany, cedar and other trees shade your way, and sunny stretches with lemongrass blanketing the undulating landscape. A low stone wall beckons you to sit awhile and relish in the refreshing breezes and the views of protected Cades Reef. On a clear day, from the summit, you’ll be able to gaze at the neighboring islands, including St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, and Montserrat.

Natural Pools of Grand Fond Hike—St. Barth

St. Barth
At only nine square miles, St. Barth is an explorer’s delight, and this spot is a crown jewel attraction. Jeanine Barone

A narrow, sun-drenched, sandy path weaves along the cliff edge for barely a mile from Grand Fond Beach. But you’ll want to stop often, snapping dramatic photos of the wild sea from your elevated perch. Mountain goats traipse along the hillside, nibbling on the dry shrubbery. The shore below is a magnet for local surfers and body boarders who come to ride the tremendous waves at a spot aptly named the Washing Machine.

Farther along, you’ll spot a pair of clear teal green tidal pools below the trail. The salt waters are calm, protected from the roiling seas by a ring of volcanic rocks. Though they make for an attractive destination for a dip, you’ll have to scramble down (and back up) a rugged slope to get there.

Vatable Forest—Martinique

martinique
Pack a lunch for a picnic and turn exploring these trails into a day of adventure. Jeanine Barone

Populated with teak, Caribbean pine, palms and other trees, this stretch of woodland is networked with easy trails that come off a main path, crisscrossing this coastal expanse. (The scenery is so bucolic that getting pleasantly lost is something to look forward to.) This destination is especially popular with families who come to picnic. Those who stroll parallel to the water will enjoy lovely views of a small uninhabited island, Les Gros Ilet, and the placid Bay of Fort-de-France.

A few benches scattered about offer the opportunity to be mindful of the sights and sounds of the forest. You can also saunter along a boardwalk for close-ups of the mangrove forest, an ecosystem that’s vital to the health of the coast, as well as the life cycle of fish.

Central Forest Reserve National Park—St. Kitts

The trails in the Central Forest Reserve National Park were carved so visitors can enjoy multiple adventures. Jeanine Barone

In the rear of the Wingfield Estate, a former sugar plantation dating to the mid-17th century, a series of loop trails course through a thick rainforest that’s part of the Central Forest Reserve National Park. Hiking guide O’Neil Mulraine cleared these paths himself, creating a trail system that’s a bit more than three miles in length, with lots of options (many are fairly chill).

Because these trails are unsigned, it’s best to sign up for a trek with Mulraine (oneilmulraine@hotmail.com), who will point out the myriad botanical curiosities, from the sandbox tree with its spine laden trunk to the quill fern that resembles a feather. Paralleling the Wingfield River, you’ll hear the gurgling of water tumbling over boulders. Under the dense shade canopy, a small, serene pool makes for a picture-perfect spot to cool off.

Salt Rocks Nature Trail—Little Cayman

Follow in the footsteps of locals on this adventure and keep an eye out for the curious wildlife. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands

Just over a mile in length one way, this flat but at times limestone rock strewn trail originated in the 1840s as a path that locals would walk from Blossom Village to the Salt Rocks Dock on the north coast of Little Cayman, the smallest of the three Cayman Islands. Visitors who are keen on spotting flora and fauna will not be disappointed with this trek, starting at the airport in Blossom Village.

You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for reptiles, such as Sister Islands Rock iguanas and green anoles, as well as vitelline warblers, bananaquits and other bird species. The plant life varies greatly along your route and includes an array of cacti, from branched varieties to pillar shaped ones, as well as the pink blossomed whitewood tree, and banana orchids, the Caymans national flower.

St. Barth
St. Barth is inarguably one of the Caribbean’s best destinations for travelers seeking culinary excellence. Comit du Tourisme de Saint Barthélemy

With all the big annual events and beloved festivals that have been canceled throughout the Caribbean since early 2020, it’s no surprise that many islands are returning with a bang. Especially when it comes to the region’s most anticipated culinary celebrations. While virtual parties and Facebook Live streams helped travelers celebrate in some capacity, nothing beats the sights, sounds, and most certainly the flavors, and that’s undoubtedly the case with the St. Barth Gourmet Food Festival.

Launched in 2014, this annual four-day showcase pairs the island’s best chefs and rising culinary geniuses with Michelin-starred chefs from all over the world, and the spotlight for the 2021 affair will unsurprisingly be on French gastronomy. And while it’s hard to imagine anything much better than that, St. Barth also uses the best hotels, resorts, and restaurants as the venues for each pairing, allowing travelers to also experience everything that makes these properties so amazing.

For a resort like Hotel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf the celebration is twofold. The property will have a massive spotlight on it as it welcomes Chef Pierre Gagnaire from the Pierre Gagnaire Restaurant in Paris, but this is also an opportunity for a second grand opening. Originally slated to open in early 2020, the hotel’s big debut was pushed back following the island’s closure, so this festival will provide a huge opportunity to finally showcase the intimate luxury visitors have been so excited to try.

Saint-Jean
Aside from the amazing food, visitors will also be spoiled by St. Barth’s incredible beaches, like Saint-Jean. Comit du Tourisme de Saint Barthélemy

Other pairings include Chef Eric Frechon of Paris’s Hotel Le Bristol at La Petite Plage; Chef Arnaud Lallement of L’Assiette Champenoise in Tinqueux at Hotel Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth; Chef Jean-Remi Caillon of Le Kintessence Le K2 Palace in Courchevel at Le Tamarin; Chef Nicolas Beaumann of Maison Rostang in Paris at Nikki Beach Saint Barth; Chef Dimitri Droisneau of La Villa Madie in Cassis at Restaurant L’Esprit Saline; Chef Sébastien Vauxion of Le Sarkara at Le K2 Palace in Courchevel at Hotel Christopher; Chef Marcel Ravin of Blue Bay at Monte-Carlo Bay Hôtel & Resort in Monaco at Hotel Manapany; owner and Chef Juan Arbelaez of Yaya, Vida, Plantxa, and Levain in Paris at Hotel Le Sereno; Chef Matthias Marc of Substance et Liquide in Paris at Zion Saint Barth; and Chef Jean Imbert of Cheval Blanc St Barth Isle de France.

Each chef will prepare a multi-course dinner for guests, while a variety of additional activities and entertainment will be announced as the event nears.

Before booking flights or stays at any St. Barth hotels and resorts, travelers should be aware of and adhere to the island’s health and safety protocols.

Originally home to the famous lovers of the 1960s—Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton—the property is unofficially dubbed “the legendary love nest.” Here, you can expect romantic bliss (such as a soak in the pink marble heart-shaped tub) during your stay at this lavish romantic getaway. (Trivia buffs: All suites are named after Taylor’s films, such as the Cleopatra and Velvet.)

This nine-suite hotel delivers an indulgent level of privacy, with spacious rooms, top-notch service, and amorous touches. Book a couple’s massage or a private Jacuzzi soak in the spacious treatment suites designed for a romantic experience. Enjoy dinner for two on a private terrace or at the open-air restaurant and tequila bar, The Iguana, which overlooks Banderas Bay and the city of Puerto Vallarta.
