The Strawberry Basilita margarita from the lobby bar at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa.
Strawberry and basil make for a refreshing combo, no matter the type of drink. JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

The quest to find the world’s greatest margarita is quite Sisyphean—I’m not sure it can ever be completed. Every time a resort’s mixologist tells me he has the best version I’ll ever taste, I sip one the following week that makes me forget the rest. There’s so much creativity and brilliance being cultivated throughout Mexico, the Caribbean, and well beyond—even Turkey is making awesome margs—that I’d have to live hundreds of years to try them all.

But if your goal is to just sample several of the best margaritas on the planet, there’s no better place to start than the legendary lobby bar at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa, where the menu boasts an unbelievable 150 versions of this classic cocktail. How do you choose from that many margs? Let’s start simple with this generous sampling of three recipes for National Margarita Day.

Strawberry Basilita

Ingredients:

  • 3 strawberries
  • 4 leaves of basil
  • 1 oz Controy or Cointreau
  • 1 oz Lime juice
  • 1 oz Simple syrup
  • 1.5 oz tequila El Gran Jurado Blanco

How to Make It:
In a mixing glass, muddle the strawberries and the basil. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass rimmed.

Prosecco Margarita

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Casa Dragones Blanco (recommended)
  • 2.5 oz Prosecco
  • 1 oz Grand Marnier
  • 0.5 oz Lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz Simple syrup

How to Make It:
Pour all ingredients in a shaker glass, except chilled Prosecco. Add ice and shake. Pour ingredients into a glass. Top with Prosecco. Garnish with lime slice.

Mezcalita

The Mazcalita cocktail from the lobby bar at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa.
Want something a little bolder? Go with mezcal. JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz tequila (preferably Tierra Noble Reposado)
  • 1 oz Cointreau
  • 1 oz mezcal
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 0.75 oz lemon juice
  • Tajin seasoning for rim

How to Make It:
Pour all ingredients in a shaker glass and muddle together. Add ice and shake. Line the glass rim with Tajin seasoning (if available). Pour ingredients into the glass, and garnish with an orange slice.

Wander rooftop bar and pool
Perks like the Wander rooftop bar and pool make this hotel a fun new choice in Cancun. Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

I’m lucky to travel frequently to Cancun and Riviera Maya, but I always stay at a hotel or resort situated squarely by the sea. So, when my transport pulled into the driveway of the Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla, I couldn’t help but feel just a little FOMO for the guests at the properties across the street located mere steps from the sand. However, over the next few days I discovered that I was able to get a whole different view of the city during my stay by the bay.

Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla is located 20 minutes from the airport in the city’s Hotel Zone. It is adjacent to the La Isla shopping and entertainment complex, which houses local and international shops, restaurants, museums, and a multiplex movie theater. The hotel is a block from the oceanfront—though the walk to the closest public beach is a bit longer—and flanked on the other side by Nichupté Bay. (In case you’re wondering, swimming is off limits here because of crocodiles, and the lagoon is surrounded by a metal fence.)

If you are exploring the area on foot and can’t find your way back to the hotel, just look for the Sky Wheel, the giant Ferris wheel that’s right next door.

Canopy by Hilton Cancun lobby
From the moment they enter, guests will experience a design and concept that is deeply rooted in local culture. Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

Hilton’s Canopy brand encourages guests to experience a destination like a local. To that end, properties are designed to feel like an extension of the neighborhood, with local elements and a sophisticated, trend-forward yet approachable vibe. This Cancun property was designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates using scenes created by local muralists and textile artisans. The sprawling lobby spans the entire depth of the hotel, spilling into Azulinda Café & Bar, one of two dining concepts, with a striking lobby bar on the right-side stocking Mexican and international spirits.

The high ceiling is adorned with a wooden trellis from which hang brightly colored corded poms, tables and chairs join more cozy, conversational couch seating with textured pillows, and rotating pieces from local artists (available for purchase) are displayed on easels and shelves.

Because Canopy properties are meant to be a bit modern and unexpected, the front desk has been rebranded to “Canopy Central.” Up a level, the Transfer Lounge is a thoughtful touch for travelers arriving before their rooms are ready or those who want to stay and play after check-out, with showers, changing areas, bathrooms, and lockers. A comfortable co-working area has the digital nomad in mind, and there is a boardroom for meetings and a stylish private event space that opens onto a terrace. You’ll find touches of Canopy’s signature bright orange hue throughout.

Canopy room
The rooms are ideal for many types of travelers, from solo adventurers to professionals on workation. Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

The 174 rooms total include 153 deluxe rooms and 5 suites with better water views. All rooms will have a view of the rising sun over the Caribbean Sea or the setting sun over the bay. I stayed in a Panoramic View One Bedroom King Suite overlooking the Sky Wheel and the bay, with a glimpse of the east sun from the living room.

That space is outfitted with a sectional sofa, 50-inch HDTV, and four-person dining table; there is also a powder room in case guests entertain. The main bathroom has a huge walk-in shower with pocket doors separating it from the rest of the room, double sinks and vanities and ample closet storage. The king-size bed is topped with a wooden canopy—a nod to the name and brand slogan of “we got you covered.” A cute sofa nook by the windows in the bedroom is perfect for reading or working.

I also swayed in the hanging hammock chair while keeping watch for the hourly performers partaking in the Danza de los Voladores. In this ancient Mesoamerican ritual, five or so participants climb a 98-foot pole (with the aid of ropes) and play the flute and drum before jumping off and swinging around like a human merry-go-round. It’s quite the scene.

Wander
Wander offers great food and cocktails, as well as some of the best views in the region. Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

Wander, the Canopy’s rooftop pool and bar, is truly the focal point of this property—and where you’ll find guests lounging in the afternoon soaking in the sun and the pumping beat of the resident DJ. Overlooking the bay, the space has a long narrow infinity pool and jacuzzi, along with table and patio seating both on the main deck and half a level down directly in front of the water. You can also rent shaded upholstered Thai beds for more room to spread out for that midafternoon siesta.

Open from 10 am until 11 pm for drinks and all-day dining, Wander specializes in refreshing agave spirit tipples. Try the Baal Chi’ Ibal, with mezcal, agave, cucumber, pineapple, lime, and mineral water, or the Sáastal, with Tequila, chili liqueur, tamarind, and orange juice. If you’re more of a gin fan like me, the Yalk’u combines it with agave liqueur, lime, coconut, and pineapple. This is also the perfect place to catch the sunset, so make sure to charge your phone.

Drinks
The property’s mixologists will not only make a delicious cocktail, like the ancho chile margarita (left), but they’ll also teach guests how to make their own. Kelly Magyarics

In addition to drinks at Wander, there is a selection of tostadas with octopus, shrimp, fish, or portobello mushrooms, as well as grilled entrees including flank steak, chicken, and an Angus burger. A can’t-miss combo for a light, fresh dinner is meaty grilled shrimp with a huge platter of grilled peppers, onions, and zucchini.

Downstairs, Azulinda Café & Bar is also open all day, starting with a breakfast buffet. Choose from a variety of freshly baked goods including flaky and addictive chocolate croissants, as well as fresh fruits and juices and American and Mexican dishes. You can also make your own chilaquiles, with freshly made tortilla chips, cotija, red onions, and salsa roja or verde; tote your plate to the omelet station to be topped with two over-easy eggs.

Like many hotels these days, both Azulinda and Wander have the same menu options for lunch, dinner, or that mid-afternoon nosh to tide you over. Bar snacks like guacamole (in traditional and vegan formats with vegan cheese) and hummus are joined by soups, burgers, tacos, pizza, and entrees. The lime soup with roasted chicken, tomato, smoked pepper, and roasted onion is a zesty, tangy surprise, and staff did well to recommend the skirt steak tacos, which are sauteed with pepper and onion and topped with pico de gallo and pickled onions. Wine and beer selections include those from local producers, and cocktails are a bit more classic and technique-driven then those on the rooftop. Save room for tres leches cake with coconut cream or a cajeta-stuffed crepe.

During my stay, I sampled some of the dishes that the culinary team is currently developing for a menu refresh, including a sushi menu at Wander that will be rolled out soon. In the meantime, guests can enjoy sushi at the weekly Dominical Brunch that takes place every Sunday at Azulinda.

Canopy Hotel interior
The current offerings and amenities are just the beginning for this creative hotel. Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

The hotel plans to expand some of the programming previously only offered to groups. During a DIY sushi class, we made tuna-topped rolls and salmon-stuffed rice balls under the watchful eye of a resort chef, then tucked into our creations. Seated on a stool at a cocktail class at Azulinda’s handsome lobby bar, I sampled a Bacon Old Fashioned and a libation using the ubiquitous-in-Mexico Licor 43. For the third round, I circled my favorite fruit and herbal ingredients on a bingo card, from citrus and cucumber to basil and rosemary, which were incorporated into a gin and tonic using my choice of gin and garnishes.

The hotel hopes to open a dedicated spa with several treatment rooms and a relaxation area. Right now, guests can book a massage that takes place in a repurposed hotel suite. You can also request one in your own room.

In addition to the daily DJ at the rooftop pool, the hotel frequently invites local comedians for weekend evening shows. (The acts are obviously in Spanish, a good opportunity to brush up on your language skills.) During the new weekly wine and cheese night in the lobby, staff sets out an impressive display of cheeses, toasted bread, olive oil, nuts, and dried fruit. Make a platter, order a glass of El Cielo Chardonnay from Baja California or Vino Tinto from Valle de Guadalupe, and listen to a set from the acoustic guitarist.

As mentioned, the beach is not accessible directly from this hotel. Since the oceanfront properties in this area are gated, you’ll need to walk about 10 to 15 minutes south to find the beach access. (You can borrow towels at the front desk.) While the stretch of beach is pretty, with white sand and none of the sargassum seaweed that plagues other Mexican beaches, there is major construction happening at one or two resorts, so you might need to walk a bit farther to find a quieter spot.

If you want to go off-property but not too far, you can stroll the designer boutiques and shops of La Isla. Consider a ride on the Ferris wheel, especially during the day, as it offers a killer view of the area. You can purchase a ticket for just the wheel or bundle it with admission to other attractions including Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum and wax museum, maze, chocolate factory, and tequila museum. (These are a bit cheesy, so manage your expectations.) You can also borrow one of the bright orange bikes set up in front of the hotel which are free for guests to use, and there is a fitness center on the rooftop.

One thing to note about this location is that it might be difficult to find nightlife within walking distance. Amma Club is very close and is one of the best clubs in the city, but it’s only open on Friday evenings. Walking around on a Saturday evening, a friend and I were hard-pressed to find a place to grab a drink. If you want to hit the clubs, you’ll need to take a taxi to the center of the Hotel Zone where there is a concentration of bars and nightclubs.

Canopy pool
Sometimes you just want to drop everything and head to a great pool. Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla

Throughout my stay I kept trying to figure out for what kind of traveler this Canopy is best suited. Staff told me that visitors who had been staying at an all-inclusive hotel come here for a night or two on the back end of their trip to see a different side of the city. That makes sense, since you aren’t beholden to a place where you’ve already prepaid for drinks and meals and have the option to dine on property, offsite, or both. It also lends more of a laidback vibe that can feel refreshing after the fight-for-a-lounge-chair-by-the-pool challenge of an AI.

The hotel welcomes children, but since the pool is more appropriate for standing and chatting with a Margarita in hand than splashing and frolicking, and there is no kids club or designated activities, it is a more fitting destination for couples and groups of friends. In general, this hotel caters to those who like a pretty poolscape to while away the day rather than those who prefer to sit with their toes in the sand.

During my stay I noticed several groups of flight crews from different airlines checking in and out, which I interpreted as a good sign. After all, if these savvy, in-the-know travel professionals who have seen it all decide this is a comfortable, convivial place for a Cancun layover, that’s a testament to the Canopy’s overarching philosophy of providing an “energizing experience with a positive stay.”

Gold Mine Margarita
The Gold Mine Margarita redefines the concept of a signature cocktail. Garza Blanca Resort and Spa Cancun

Signature cocktails sometimes tell us everything we need to know about a resort. A simple recipe might mean humble, minimalist luxury and comfort, while elaborate lists of ingredients and a spectacle of mixology at the lobby bar suggests guests are in for a heck of a stay. If anything, it is a sample of the creativity we will experience elsewhere in the property during a stay, and that’s especially the case at Garza Blanca Resort and Spa Cancun.

This staple of modern all-inclusive luxury has already wowed travelers with the elaborate three- and four-bedroom penthouses and thrilling amenities, but it is the debut of the Gold Mine Margarita at the adults-only rooftop bar that is sure to be the talk of Cancun. Developed by the property’s Master Mixologists, this cocktail was conceived as a delicious tribute to Mayan culture, as the recipe calls for 24 karat gold flakes.

Truly a marg destined for Instagram glory.

In addition to the gold and crucial top-shelf tequila, guests will be treated to a room-stopping presentation, sort of like when someone in your crew orders fajitas and all heads turn. Except this is way cooler and ends with the name of the person who ordered the marg being immortalized on a plaque for The Gold Mine Margarita Club. An honor like that is truly hard to come by anywhere else, which is why the price tag is $200.

Garza Blanca Resort and Spa Cancun spoils guests with variety at restaurants like Blanca Blue, DAO, and Bocados Steak House, and there are many more cocktails to be enjoyed at the beachside Food Truck. They just won’t land your name on a plaque.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach
Your friends could do much worse than heading to Cabo for draft day next year. Quivira Los Cabos

We keep hearing (and writing) that “travel is back,” and the popular themes are wellness, workations, and especially long overdue, rescheduled destination weddings. For some people, the reason never matters, but others occasionally need a little nudge like, “It’s National Margarita Day, so don’t you deserve a few days at the JW Marriott Cancun’s lobby bar?” If anything, it helps us treat every vacation like a holiday.

This came up earlier this summer in a conversation with 11 old friends as we debated dates for our fantasy football draft. As we enter year 21 of our league, I pointed out that we hadn’t had a real, in-person draft party in quite some time, so wouldn’t it be fun if we picked a cool destination so we can all catch up?

Turns out that’s a little tougher than we’d have thought. After all, most of us have families and careers, so it’s difficult to plan these kinds of trips for just a one- or two-day escape. “So, let’s make a thing of it,” I insisted. Eyebrows were raised and more questions followed. “Let’s pick a resort in the Caribbean so spouses or entire families can come, fun can be had, and vacation days can be used. Let’s put the party back in draft party!”

Well, it’s still a work in progress. This year’s draft was yet another Zoom call, but if I could head somewhere tropical to waste the 10th overall pick on Alvin Kamara, these are the resorts I’d highly recommend.

Sandals Royal Curaçao

Sandals Royal Curaçao
There’s plenty of ground to cover here, which means guests will always work up an appetite while exploring. Sandals Royal Curaçao

The freshest resort in my mind, the newest property on Curaçao is a great choice for all the best reasons. For starters, the all-inclusive Sandals Royal Curaçao feels like it was designed to entertain groups (adults-only, sorry kids), with dining options and amenities that encourage variety and ensure the word boredom has no meaning.

Want to go big and have a draft that will possibly go viral but certainly be unforgettable? Book multiple Awa Seaside Butler Bungalows and make your selections in one of the private pools as the waves crash nearby. Or grab a few of the tables at the food truck pavilion so everyone can enjoy a variety of food options and the must-have mango margaritas while you laugh at that one guy who always picks the injured player.

And perhaps best of all, Old Quarry’s first hole tee box is just steps from those trucks, so everyone can grab a rental set and keep the fun going on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful (and challenging) courses.

(Bonus idea: Draft off-site at Bklyn, a bar inspired by New York City’s rap and hip hop culture that also serves some awesome cocktails and snacks—just don’t be loud or you’ll miss the great music.)

W Punta de Mita

E-wow
This eclectic suite definitely puts the wow in E-wow. W Punta de Mita

We all know that villas are immensely popular right now because they allow families and small groups to feel like they’re staying in a home away from home. (Also, they’re typically just flat out cool.) Now, if we’re talking about 10-14 adults, chances are it’s going to be tough to find something that large at a resort. Instead, I’d suggest finding the coolest villa from which to draft, and perhaps allowing the league champion to stay there. (That will probably earn some boos.)

A perfect example is the Extreme Wow (or E-wow) Oceanfront Oasis Suite at W Punta de Mita. This two-bedroom suite is one of the coolest accommodations in this popular Mexican destination, with a plunge pool and jacuzzi, as well as large windows that open to make this feel like a wide-open palace. It is truly fit for royalty… or at least a trophy holder.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort
This resort is the place to be for travelers of all ages who never want the fun to end. Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa

When friends ask me for Caribbean travel recommendations right now, my first pick is St. Maarten. Often overlooked as “that place you land” when visiting her neighboring islands, this Dutch slice of paradise has overcome serious adversity in recent years and deserves a spotlight for its emerging creativity. And with its size, style, and family-friendly atmosphere, Sonesta Maho Beach Resort makes for an ideal base camp, especially if kids are coming.

That’s because the Aqua Park, with its three slides, is simply awesome, but adults will also be thrilled with the resort’s massive Oasis pool, which will be the best place to relax the brain before all those difficult decisions are made. The draft, however, would take place off property at the Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, home of the Caribbean’s best beer

Leagues that draw draft order on the night of the event could even use this bar’s escape rooms, with the fastest times earning the earliest picks.

The Buccaneer

Aerial view of The Buccaneer golf course.
Between its incredible views and generous fairways, this is a course any golfer can appreciate. The Buccaneer

Perhaps most recognizable to fans of The Bachelor, this resort is a St. Croix institution. Arriving here feels like you’re checking in to a really fun summer camp, as the spacious property includes a variety of outdoor amenities and activities that will make any group entirely pleased with the choice.

What makes The Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort (now a part of the Trademark Collection by Wyndham) so enticing is easy—the beaches. Want to relax and catch some rays? Grotto Beach. Want to grab a snorkel or kayak and explore the water? Mermaid Beach. Want nothing but seclusion? That’s Whistle Beach, which is also home to the thing that makes this resort such a good choice: The Beach House. This six-bedroom accommodation is as cool as it gets in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the pool is simply begging to be a draft party location.

After the last pick is made, everyone can tee off from the 18-hole course that boasts magnificent ocean views, and also has some very forgiving holes that will make players of all experience levels feel great about their games.

Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino

Aruba Marriott Resort
Location is everything and this resort is right in the heart of Aruba’s best activities. Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

Those of us who have played fantasy football for a long time tend to think about it a lot. Like, sometimes more than anything else. That’s why it wasn’t that unusual that as I enjoyed the incredible Atardi beach dining experience at Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino, I found myself thinking, “Man, this would be quite a draft spot.” To be fair, though, that goes for a lot of spots on this property, which is why it’s such a good choice.

But, again, if this is the destination, I’m tempted to take the draft festivities off-property, because once you’ve had the Passion-Rita and Long Island-Rita at The West Deck, you’re going to want to live there. That’s not to say the food and drink aren’t terrific at Aruba Marriott—definitely among the best on the island—but it’s fun to explore and find those special places.

Plus, once the shuttle arrives back at the resort, the entire crew can hit the casino for some post-draft gaming.

Marriott Cancun Resort

Marriott Cancun
The food at this beach shack is outstanding, but the mezcal cocktails will keep guests coming back for more. Marriott Cancun

I know a lot of people just want to keep things simple and head to a sports bar for wings and beers while they roast their buddies who chose Kamara over Saquon Barkley and Davante Adams, but you can still do that in a resort setting. Case in point: Marriott Cancun Resort’s Champions Sports Bar, which has TVs in the bar and dining area—ideal for those players who need hints from sports shows while everyone enjoys wings and burgers.

And the bonus is that you’re in Mexico, at one of the most entertaining resorts, so when you’re not drafting, the whole league can eat some of the best quesadillas and guacamole I’ve ever had at the SacBé Beach Shack, or everyone can meet up the final evening for a truly informative and delicious mezcal tasting.

(Yet another bonus is that this hotel is connected to the JW Marriott Cancun, which is home to the lobby bar with 150 margaritas. Even the guy who always finishes in last place can’t complain about that.)

Quivira Los Cabos

A rocky cliffside next to the Quivira Golf Club.
The views here will make everyone forget about their worst draft picks. Quivira Golf Club

If your league mates are bringing families and/or golf clubs, you’ll want to head to the Pacific coast of Mexico and a resort community that is getting better and more exciting by the day. Not only is Quivira Los Cabos home to a course that recently landed on the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses—it should be top 10, in my opinion—but it boasts an ideal range of accommodations and phenomenal dining options.

Couples who leave the kids at home will want to book rooms at the adults-only Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, which looks like a luxurious sandcastle built on one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. Step it up and stay at the Towers at Pacifica, where adults are spoiled with 24-hour butler service—the only drawback is the constant noise of other couples celebrating the fact that they’re in paradise with no kids.

That’s not to say this isn’t a place for children. Quite the opposite, as families will love the space and amenities offered at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. And if you’re in that villa mindset, Pueblo Bonito Montecristo Estates offers three-bedroom units with private infinity pools. There’s not a bad choice to be made here.

As far as drafting, I have two ideas: head to The After at Quivira, a truly fulfilling sports bar setting, or stay outside and enjoy the Cabo evening while grabbing snacks and treats at La Choya Wandering Kitchen. Then celebrate a decent draft with a round at the epic Quivira Golf Club, for which Jack Nicklaus truly outdid himself.

Reynolds Lake Oconee

clay shooting
Groups can even have private lessons from the property’s coaches. Reynolds Lake Oconee

All this talk about golf makes me think of only one U.S. resort community: Reynolds Lake Oconee. With five courses that guests can play (the sixth is private), it’s already one of the best getaway choices for families and small groups, but there’s an entirely different amenity here that would make for the best fantasy draft setting imaginable. Of course, I mean the Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, which offers a variety of exciting outdoor activities, including archery, fishing, and an off-road course with awesome Land Rovers.

But the reason I’ve included everyone’s favorite southern vacation destination is the sporting clays—aka “Golf with a Shotgun”—which could make for the best draft pick lottery your league has ever considered. Each team manager could meet at the five-stand, which is a compact clay course, and the best scores dictate the draft order. An especially clever league member might even slip resident shooting champion Jasper Copelan a few bucks to make it a little easier.

As for accommodations, the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Lake Oconee exists as one of the most luxurious lodges in the country, but families will definitely enjoy the various cottages in the National Club and The Landing, if they’re available.

Sure, we like the fact that it’s an eco-resort: a sustainable property featuring solar-powered guestrooms, a windmill and onsite composting. But it’s the 957-room resort’s surroundings — jungle, lagoons, a zoo, ancient Mayan temples within walking distance — that truly underscore the property’s preserved, natural vibe.

burger on the beach
There’s nothing quite like a good hamburger while enjoying the views of the nearest ocean. Shutterstock

For as many resorts as we visit, it’s hard to keep track of the things we love the most. Stunning infinity pools, classic white sand beaches, and amazing spas… oh yeah, those spas. But the one thing that never fails to get people talking, from strangers on social media to our closest friends and family, is the food. It doesn’t take long after a return or review for someone to ask, “What was the best thing you ate?”

I’ve always thought that the only thing that would make Guy Fieri’s job better would be if he visited the Caribbean (his Hawaii episodes are basically work research for me at this point). In fact, I often (half) joke that my quest in life is eating my way from the Bahamas to Aruba, which does a number on the beach bod, but, boy, is it worth it.

All jokes aside, restaurants and resorts from the U.S. to Costa Rica have worked so hard over the years to create better culinary experiences for visitors and regulars, and great food goes a long way in how we feel about our vacations. To get a better idea of which joints are serving up the best dishes in our favorite locations, we shined our hamburger spotlight into the night sky. The result is an inspirational appetizer for burgers we can’t wait to eat the next time we visit these popular destinations.

The Doughburger

Doughburger
Seventy-five years of satisfied customers will tell you that the Doughburger is a Mississippi icon. Johnnie’s Drive In

The Restaurant: Johnnie’s Drive In

The Location: Tupelo, Mississippi

Speaking of diners, drive-ins and dives, let’s start with a classic hamburger at a restaurant that makes for a perfect pit stop on the great American road trip. You don’t have to be a geography major to know that Tupelo isn’t an island, but if you’re driving south to escape the cold and enjoy an extended weekend of adventure on Cat Island or Ship Island, then you’ll want to make sure this Mississippi institution is marked on your GPS.

The Doughburger from Johnnie’s Drive In also comes with a great story. A favorite of Elvis Presley, this burger dates back to 1945 and is anything but ordinary, as the patties are made by mixing ground beef with other ingredients like potato flakes and breadcrumbs. The recipe was created from a need to conserve meat, but a funny thing happened: people loved it. And, so, a Magnolia State legend was born.

The Royalton Cheeseburger

Royalton Cheese
Doesn’t get much better than burgers and brews. Royalton Suites Cancun

The Restaurant: SCORE Sports Bar

The Resort: Royalton Suites Cancun

The Location: Cancun

When it comes to dining at resorts, we’re allowed to be snobby. We’re allowed to expect a little more from traditional menu items, like cheeseburgers, but we also don’t want them to be too crazy. The Royalton Cheese from the SCORE Sports Bar at Royalton Suites Cancun is a perfect example of this concept, because it is still very much a cheeseburger, but with some bonus frills.

For starters, it aces the eyeball test with all the right toppings and a fun red Solo cup full of fries on the side. But it also treats you with herbed goat cheese as an option, and if you haven’t tried that, you need to. Pairs very well with a strawberry margarita on the rocks.

The Umami Truffle

Umami Burger
Who among us isn’t a sucker for globs of melted truffle cheese? Umami Burger

The Restaurant: Umami Burger

The Resort: Baha Mar

The Location: The Bahamas

One of the first travel lessons I ever learned when I was young was you don’t fly halfway around the world just to eat American fast food. Now, Umami Burger should never be compared to the Golden Arches, but when you visit a place like the Bahamas, you’re still not really thinking about eating at a beloved Los Angeles burger joint. That is, unless you know just how good Umami Burger really is.

We’ve highlighted the Umami Truffle because it is as simple as it is extravagant— truffle aioli, truffle cheese and truffle glaze—and you can practically taste this one just by looking at it. But first-timers should probably start with the Umami Classic, which features a burger patty, parmesan frico, shiitake mushroom, roasted tomato, caramelized onions and ketchup. Or, as some resorts and restaurants throughout the Caribbean have realized, beef might not be your preference. Umami Burger’s Original Impossible Burger, with two veggie patties, has gained “cult” status, not just for being a great vegetarian option, but for being an all-around incredible burger that you can take right from Baha Mar’s charming food trucks right to the beach.

Beach House’s Citrus BBQ Burger

citrus BBQ burger
Nobody needs to reinvent the wheel, but adding a delicious citrus twist never hurt. Beach Deck

The Restaurant: Beach Deck

The Resort: Beach House

The Location: Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

We typically expect a few things from Caribbean dining. For starters, a good view. Sunrise, sunset, a gorgeous beach and crystal waters—they all pair well with a meal. Also, we expect freshness and a little dash of creativity. These are things we’ve certainly come to expect from resorts and restaurants on Turks and Caicos.

The citrus BBQ burger at Beach House’s Beach Deck restaurant in Providenciales checks all the boxes, from the wonderful view of Grace Bay (there’s hardly a bad view of Grace Bay in general) to the in-house sauce for which this burger is named. And if you’re in the mood for a little extra Caribbean flavor, the pineapple slaw should do the trick.

Williwood’s Kabritu (Goat) Burger

goat burger
Is this burger, dare we say, the GOAT? Williwood

The Restaurant: Williwood

The Location: St. Willibrordus (AKA Williwood), Curaçao

One of the reasons Curaçao has rocketed to the top of our must-visit list for the Caribbean is the island’s amazing sense of community. Local businesses and restaurants are relying on charm and innovation to turn the C in the ABC islands into an A+ destination. That’s especially the case for the village of St. Willibrordus Curaçao, which is better known these days as Williwood. It even has its own version of the Hollywood sign.

Visitors who flock to the island’s cove beaches will want to plan for lunch at the Williwood Terras, where the food is wild and the Williburgers are next level. Case in point: the Kabritu Burger, or spicy goat burger. Traditionally a stew, the goat meat was combined with a variety of seasonings and topped with creamy goat cheese to become one of the most unique and presumably delicious burgers in the Caribbean.

Morgan’s Veggie Burger

Morgan's veggie burger
If there’s one man you can trust to make a delicious burger, it’s Guy Fieri. Planet Hollywood Costa Rica

The Restaurant: Guy’s Burger Joint

The Resort: Planet Hollywood Beach Resort

The Location: Guanacaste, Costa Rica

For almost 10 years, tropical travelers have enjoyed Guy Fieri’s signature smash burgers as a staple of Carnival Cruises. Land lovers and beach bums, however, had to wait until 2018 to grab one of his Flavortown specials in a resort setting, when Guy’s Burger Joint opened at Planet Hollywood Beach Resort Costa Rica. Authentic regional cuisine it might not be, but Fieri’s dishes are typically otherworldly, and that goes triple for Morgan’s Veggie Burger.

Named for his sister, this vegetarian option is a guest favorite and it’s easy to see why. An all-natural vegetable patty is comprised of three types of beans and topped with Siracha mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles, all stacked atop a toasted whole-wheat bun. You might want to cut it in half.

The Bomber Burger

bomber burger
Insert a GIF of Homer Simpson drooling here. The Bay Restaurant

The Restaurant: The Bay Restaurant

The Location: Santa Rosa Beach, FL

Tucked away in Florida’s panhandle, surrounded by several beautiful state parks, Santa Rosa Beach is the kind of white-sand spot that locals don’t want people to know about. Well, tough luck. Once people learn about this incredible hamburger from The Bay Restaurant, people will be marking the Hwy. 331 bridge on Google Maps and setting course for Choctawhatchee Bay.

A truly amazing burger can be described like this: “Just look at that thing.” The Bomber Burger has achieved that status. Dripping with sauces of the super and street variety, the 8-oz. patty is topped with roasted tomato, caramelized onions and an asiago cheese crisp. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go buy a new keyboard because this one is covered with drool.

Trapper Burger

trapper burger
A Grand Hotel should serve a truly grand burger. The Grand Hotel

The Restaurant: The Gate House

The Resort: The Grand Hotel

The Location: Mackinac Island, MI

At a place like The Grand Hotel, where visitors to Michigan’s beloved Mackinac Island are kept busy with a wide variety of activities, a really good burger is a necessity, if not for refueling then simply complementing the area’s sophistication and Americana charm. Fortunately, the Gate House restaurant offers a variety of incredible burgers that are perfect for everyone from golfers who just wrapped up 18 holes at The Jewel to dads who love a good beef-fueled mid-afternoon nap.

Burger snobs might prefer the American Wagyu Beef Burger, which is topped with pancetta bacon, Roquefort cheese and truffle mayo, but locals and visitors alike all agree that the signature Trapper Burger does the trick. A classic bacon cheeseburger topped with BBQ sauce, the Trapper is a great choice for celebrating a pickleball victory.

Goddess Burger

Goddess burger
A burger made for deities. Or people who just really appreciate a great burger. Charbar Co.

The Restaurant: Charbar Co.

The Location: Hilton Head Island, SC

If you’re the type of burger-loving traveler who has a tough time making decisions, Charbar Co. in Hilton Head Island might make things harder. That’s because this exemplary burger joint’s menu is downright unfair to those of us who want to try it all but only have so many days of vacation time. After all, there are two World Burger Championship Top 20 finishers on this menu, and the Dirty South Burger’s pimento cheese and smoked pork belly have me filling up my gas tank for a southern road trip right now.

So, if you need a starting point, the Goddess Burger should do the trick, despite looking too good to eat. The signature beef patty is topped with Brie cheese, harissa tomato jam, arugula, tomato, crispy prosciutto and the green goddess dressing. Don’t worry, you can have the Wine Jam Wagyu Burger tomorrow.

The Bagger Burger

ryder cup bar burger
Remember to remove your golf gloves first. Kiawah Island Golf Resort

The Restaurant: The Ryder Cup Bar at the Ocean Course Clubhouse

The Resort: Kiawah Island Golf Resort

The Location: Kiawah Island, SC

Golfers shouldn’t need to be told about Kiawah Island, but it is a barrier island that boasts beautiful beaches and, of course, incredible golf courses. Specifically, Kiawah Island Golf Resort is home to five courses, including the Ocean Course, which hosted the Ryder Cup in 1991 and will host the 2021 PGA Championship. It was also featured in The Legend of Bagger Vance, and that’s why the Ryder Cup Bar’s signature burger is named the Bagger Burger.

Located inside the Ocean Course Clubhouse, where you’ll undoubtedly want to purchase extra balls before your round, the bar features a menu cultivated by executive chef John Ondo, who, as a native South Carolinian, puts his own spin on local cuisine, like the signature Crispy Shrimp. As for the burger, the black angus patty is topped with smoked cheddar and peppered bacon, and it’s all enough to make you forget about the 95 you just shot.

Baby Back Burger

one-hot-mama
Bring a bib, because this could get messy. One Hot Mama’s

The Restaurant: One Hot Mama’s

The Location: Hilton Head Island, SC

The great thing about hamburger creativity is that when a burger is so over-the-top that it looks like a piece of culinary art, we don’t feel as bad about it being too much. And since vacations are all about letting go and enjoying everything to the extreme, a meal like the Baby Back Burger at One Hot Mama’s in Hilton Head Island is the epitome of a let loose, undo your belt buckle vacation meal.

A former Food Network Star finalist, Chef Orchid’s menu features a variety of burgers and “super” sandwiches, but this burger combines the best of two worlds. An American cheeseburger by itself is great, but slap a 1/3 rack of boneless baby back ribs, red onion, coleslaw and pickles on the patty, and you will know why this restaurant is part of the Official South Carolina BBQ Trail.

The Carpet Bagger Burger

carpet-bagger-burger
Fried oysters on a burger? Yes, please. B&B Butchers & Restaurant

The Restaurant: B&B Butchers & Restaurant

The Location: Houston, TX

We’re cheating again here, because Houston is clearly not an island, but if you’re road-tripping to Galveston Island and need a quick burger fix, little birdies tell us the Carpet Bagger Burger at B&B Butchers & Restaurant is a mindblower. This burger, which showcases proprietor Benjamin Berg’s ability to blend his New York City culinary style with everything we expect from a Texas meat joint, is a wonderful mess of epic proportions.

The thick patty is part filet mignon and part sirloin and is topped with bacon, which is always a good start. But then come the fried oysters, which are smothered in blue cheese crumbles and the homemade hot sauce. So, even if you’re not planning a road trip to Galveston Island, this might be the inspiration you need.

The Los Ranchos Four-Chile Burger

Steel Bender burger
Who among us doesn’t love to tell people we ate an award-winning burger? Steel Bender Brewyard

The Restaurant: Steel Bender Brewyard

The Location: Albuquerque, NM

There’s no island near Albuquerque, so the only thing we have to justify including this burger is how good it looks. After all, when you’re the winner of the 2019 Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown People’s Choice Awards, well, that’s as big as the Oscars to us hamburger aficionados. The Los Ranchos Four-Chile Burger at the Steel Bender Brewyard looks and sounds so amazing that we will just let the description speak for itself:

A local house-ground patty made with Native American Tribal Land brisket topped with a heaping portion of chopped Bueno Green Chile and Tucumcari cheddar with a house made aioli featuring Thunderhead Farms Paprika, Padron and Bird Chile peppers, local organic tomato, and locally-sourced arugula tossed in house made truffle-onion vinaigrette made from onions sourced from Loose Leaf Farms. Served on a Pastian’s Bakery bun with a side of hand-cut fries.

Looks like our next Mexico trip might be rerouted through Albuquerque.

Paradisus Cancun
Paradisus Cancun already offers one of the most unique settings in this popular destination, and the SUDA collaboration incorporates the natural beauty into a powerful new experience. Paradisus Cancun

It’s 9 a.m., and I’ve taken a shavasana pose on a bamboo mat at the bottom of a Mexican cenote. At least that’s what it feels like.

The Yoga Connection that’s about to begin is the kick-off to a five-day collaboration between new Ibiza-based experiential wellness company SUDA and Mélia Hotels. It’s taking place in the Reserve tower of the all-inclusive resort Paradisus Cancun, the building reserved for guests who crave a more luxe experience, where they can indulge with a private beach, pool, cabanas, lounge, and a dedicated restaurant—not to mention a personal butler to fill in the blanks.

Designed by architect Álvaro Sans, who brought an open-air feel and incorporated nature-influenced elements, the space most definitely feels like one of the underground rivers that are part of the Yucatan’s unique geological formations. Our mats are set up underneath huge round faceted skylights letting in the sun, while vines and other greenery trail the eight or so stories to the bottom, and water features meander under wooden walkways and through the all-day lounge and individualized check-in and check-out areas. The effect is stunningly beautiful—this is not the setting for your run-of-the-mill hotel activity. And that’s exactly the point.

While a yoga class held in, say, a hotel gym or fitness studio is functional, it lacks an organic connection with its setting, which could be part of the natural world or even a historical landmark or a place of cultural significance, SUDA CEO and co-founder Lighuen Desanto told me. These events aim to make the location an integral part of the experience, rather than merely a backdrop.

Even indoors, the experience can make guests feel like they’re immersed in Mexico’s immense natural beauty. Mélia Hotels

SUDA was founded in 2020 by Desanto, Flor Daneu, Nahuel Desanto, and Mariana Limeres, a group of artists, choreographers, creative directors, and movement trainers with 10 years of investigation of movement under their belts. When the pandemic put the entire world on pause, they used the time to retreat to Ibiza to create an original wellness concept.

Their core philosophy is “we move, then we exist”—a play on Descartes’ belief that “I think, therefore I am.” Lighuen explained to me that movement—to be born, to find food, to grow—is the primary action of survival and existence for all living things. But rather than just encompassing physicality, movement is also about evolving emotionally and overcoming mental blockages, stagnations and challenges. “We apply this philosophy so that our guests understand movement from an organic, necessary and functional place,” he said. “That they understand physical and mental movement as a tool for life in general.”

After Melia’s expert in luxury and lifestyle brand experience Cesar Alvarez saw SUDA’s potential for creating sophisticated, innovative mind/body offerings, the hotel group collaborated with them on events at two of their Spanish properties—Meliá Salinas in Lanzarote and Hacienda del Conde, a member of Meliá Collection in Tenerife. There, bootcamps were joined by an exclusive Signature Wellness Program. That followed with the Mind & Body Holistic Bootcamp Week – SUDA x Paradisus by Meliá, a week of immersive holistic experiences (they prefer that term to “class”) offered at Paradisus properties in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and San José del Cabo. The end goal is to incorporate SUDA into inspired wellness programming for guests at Paradisus resorts in Mexico.

Primal Movement Training
Primal Movement Training combines the best of several popular fitness and wellness concepts. Mélia Hotels

“Ours is a very natural fit, there is a deep connection in our philosophy and vision,” explained Carmen Benitez, Melia Hotels marketing manager for Mexico. “SUDA invites us to ‘awaken your inner power’ and connects with our brand slogan ‘Embrace Your Nature.’” There is a double-entendre in that tagline, referring both to the resorts’ natural settings and an organic approach to being true to yourself.

I attended five experiences the week of my stay, and while each was a bit different, they all shared some similar elements. Mats were always set up in a circular formation—we were encouraged to draw energy from the rest of the group. Each session concluded with us donning wireless headphones for a seated meditation featuring ethereal music and soothing affirmation and directions from our instructor. Guests could leave the designer workout wear and sneakers at home—any comfy clothing sufficed, and we were invited to go barefoot.

The day after that faux-cenote-set yoga class taught by Daneu, we convened on a manicured lawn near the ocean at sunset for Primal Movement Training, a combination of boot camp, power and flow yoga, and guided relaxation led by Nahue. Lunges, planking, vinyasas, asanas, and lunges were followed by an instruction to close our eyes and use instinctive movement to act out like whatever animal we chose. It felt a tad self-conscious at first to stretch, repose and walk like a cat, but I gained a little more nerve after I peeked for a second and saw everyone else literally going with the flow.

Meditation
Who says restaurants are only for dining? Mélia Hotels

The following morning it was off for Guided Meditation at Lemon Fish, the resort’s new Japanese restaurant located in the center of the main building where sushi is served at tables set in teak “cabins”. It was another gorgeous space, where Daneu sat in-the-round amid singing bowls and macrame-clad candles and during a practice of gentle yoga and mindfulness encouragingly reminded us “you are stronger than you think.” Indeed.

We convened on the beach later that day for Ecstatic Dance, during which we rubbed our palms together, then placed them in front of our hearts, faces and next to our neighbor’s palms to feel the heat and energy generated. In between downward dogs, cobra and child’s poses, we practiced learning how to fall down and get up with the least amount of effort—a bit more difficult than it sounds.

SUDA experiences are designed for those with a range of skill level and ability and beginners are welcome—even if you don’t know your Baddha Konasana from your Tadasana. But it does help to be somewhat physically fit. As I had just started a daily yoga practice a few months prior, I found them to be doable and a decent workout for my day (especially when lunging or a bit of cardio were involved.)

The name SUDA stems from the Spanish word “sudar,” meaning “to sweat”—a physical response whose purported therapeutic benefits range from detoxification, disease prevention and healthy weight maintenance to improving your mood and promoting more restful sleep. “We sweat what we no longer need, to let it go,” Lighuen told me. “So, it is something that is connected with the 360º mind and body training that our experience proposes.”

Ecstatic Dance
Guests are encouraged to simply “let go” of their negative baggage in experiences like Ecstatic Dance. Mélia Hotels

That concept of “letting go” was a mantra woven into the week. During the aforementioned Ecstatic Dance we were encouraged to “let go of whatever we don’t need,” whether it be a toxic relationship, unfulfilling job, or negative talk and self-doubt. At the time of my trip, I had been undergoing a personal transition, so I found this message to be liberating and validating.

In between our activities, I found plenty of ways to spend my days at the upscale resort–including ones that aligned with the wellness theme. Early mornings I often headed to the beach for solo sun salutations, guided meditations or walks by the surf. Because my room was located in The Reserve, my stay included several days at a comfy poolside cabana, where I journaled while sipping a breakfast smoothie (okay, it was a Pina Colada). One afternoon I escaped to Yhi Spa for an Oriental Twerk treatment, which combined the toxic-removing benefits of deep tissue massage with the full-body stretching that’s a hallmark of Thai massage. (My therapist was amazing and even did some massage on my jaw as requested to help with my stress-induced teeth grinding and clenching.)

Dining highlights included Santé, the beachfront Mediterranean restaurant that’s exclusive to guests of the Reserve, where I started the day with shakshuka and ordered beef tenderloin skewers and a perfect Greek salad for lunch. The snapper ceviche and coconut shrimp at Aqua Marina went well with a crisp glass of rosé and people watching by the main pool. And Lemon Fish served up super fresh nigiri from tuna to salmon skin, fun rolls like crab tempura and tuna with black garlic, mayo and black sesame, and skewers seared on the izakaya.

On our last afternoon we boarded a catamaran to Isla Mujeres for the final experience. Once on this quirky island, where golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation and the vibe is decidedly more laid-back than on Cancun, we spent an afternoon that combined Mayan culture with transformative wellness. On the southern tip of the island at Punta Sur we toured the ruins of the Temple Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, where Mayan girls used to be taken for a primer on their transformation to womanhood. It’s also the spot where the sun first rises in Mexico. But we were on the island for an experience that would conclude as the day ended.

tree pose
The author practicing what the SUDA program preaches. Mélia Hotels

On the sand at a beach club overlooking the rocky shore, we took to our mats one last time for a little bit of everything we had done all week along with some interactive group work in the middle of the circle. During that hour, we were all living out what Lighuen believes to be SUDA’s ultimate purpose: allowing ourselves to play, dance, jump, laugh, move without prejudice or self-consciousness, unblock emotions, breathe. And above all, be grateful to be alive to enjoy this practice of movement.

As we finished our practice, we were instructed to turn around to see the sun just dipping below the horizon. I recalled how the main objective for boot camp attendees was to undergo an experience of personal transformation, to find a balance between body and mind. Whether that means simply returning home to a less-stressed version of yourself, setting a goal to embark on a new career path, or ending a relationship that no longer serves you, the takeaway is the same: change is good.

Paradisus by Melia is already incorporating the SUDA experience at its Mexico properties, including yoga, guided meditation, functional training, acroyoga (at Paradisus Los Cabos) and Silk (at Paradisus Cancun). They are also considering other related additions to their immersive wellness program.

Inspired by local artisans and the surrounding nature, the resort’s accommodations offer modern and unique guest rooms with furnished balconies, infinite ocean views, dining and living room spaces, and even private swim-up patios. Hilton Cancun also accommodates large groups via private chef’s kitchens and larger dining areas in expansive presidential suites and apartments.

Twelve unique dining options provide guests with a wide array of international cuisines and culinary experiences, all without ever having to leave the resort. At Maxal, guests can enjoy the rich time-honored dishes of Mexican cuisine, and the resort’s La Luce Restaurant offers Mediterranean classics and carafes of wine centered around a wood-fired pizza oven. Auma, the resort’s experiential steakhouse restaurant, serves prime cuts and house specialties with guests intimately close to dazzling, open-flame preparation. Sunan rounds out the resort’s dining options with southeast Asian dishes. Guests can also lounge all day long at Vela, a hip lounge influenced by the colors, sounds, and energy of southern Mexico. And for mid-day desserts and quick bites, the resort features an ice cream and churro shop and taqueria with a mezcal and tequila bar.

Splash pool
Travelers love all-inclusive resorts because they offer a little (or even a lot) of everything, and that’s especially the case for kids. Hilton Cancun

Upon arrival, visitors can jump right into the resort’s wide-ranging entertainment offerings. The Splash Pool features fun slides, beach games, and water toys and lounge chairs surrounded by palm trees and easy access to drinks and signature dishes. There are two more oceanfront pools with private cabanas, one for families and one for guests seeking serenity and escape, and the beach’s golden sand and pristine blue water is only steps away. For families, the kids’ club and teen zone promises hours of entertainment including a climbing wall and arts and crafts. Finally, concerts and shows are often presented at the hotel’s amphitheater.

In addition to the resort’s wellness programming and state-of-the-art fitness center, guests have access to the signature Waldorf Astoria Spa, set to open in late 2022. Paying tribute to Mayan holistic healing practices, the spa will include a salon, indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, and a private pool.

Mexico
Mexico’s best beach towns feature some incredible Airbnb rentals that make for great vacation settings, like this luxurious property geared toward larger groups. Airbnb

Endless sun, tacos at every meal, jungles to explore, and mountains framing epic sunset views are just the beginning of Mexico’s endless appeal—and we can never get enough. Looking for a little more privacy and exclusivity? Head off the beaten path a bit on your next trip and book an Airbnb rental.

Most on our list come with their own private pools and some even include private chefs, but all of them guarantee an amazing time. From Cancun to Puerto Vallarta, here are our picks on where to relax and recharge on your next Mexico escape.

Surfer Style—Sayulita

Sayulita
This is a great spot if your goal is to hang ten without sharing waves with too many people. Airbnb

Surf chic located steps from the water, Casa Playa—a three-bedroom bungalow in Sayulita on Mexico’s Pacific Coast—is barefoot luxury at its finest. Accordion glass doors open to connect the bedrooms and living areas to the outdoors, ushering in the sounds and smell of the sea.

We especially love that this home offers room service from of the nearby Don Pedros Restaurant, which boasts a varied menu that includes a mix of flavor, including octopus carpaccio, spicy tuna sashimi tostadas, and Mexican pizza with chorizo, chiles, and black beans.

Castle on the Beach—Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres
Everyone wants to live like royalty on vacation, so why not stay in your own castle? Airbnb

We love Casa Alkimia, a four-bedroom castle on Isla Mujeres, which is a 15-minute ferry ride from Cancun. The towering home has a Moroccan vibe, with bright white walls and lots of curves; inside, the style leans toward nature and neutrals, with basket lamps and raw wood railings. We’re especially taken with the rooftop lounge where you can take in 360-degree views while soaking in the private plunge pool.

Art Lover’s Dream—Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta
Style takes on a new meaning in this spectacular Puerto Vallarta rental. Airbnb

Mexican artist Sergio Bustamente created the paintings and sculptures in this three-bedroom sprawling retreat in Puerto Vallarta on the west coast. Book this home for the delights and surprises, including the palapa-covered outdoor living area, the wall of tiny sculptures catching dreams above one of the beds, and the balcony opening to a jungle of palm trees leading to the water.

Rooftop Pad—Tulum

Tulum
Enjoy views for days from this rooftop setting that will make you wish you were staying for weeks. Airbnb

It’s almost a shame that the interior of this Tulum gem is so lovely—including the raw-edge dining room table for eight in the open-floor plan modern main level—because you’ll likely spend most of your time on the rooftop hangout space. Surrounded by palm trees and rainforest, this space has a private, hidden gem feel.

Up on the roof level, there’s plenty of room to spread out on the day bed, outdoor dining table, and the pool. What’s more, the host works with a concierge team that includes a chef and driver for a truly five-star, pampered experience. Also of note: We like that this three-bedroom home is in a gated community.

Treehouse Charmer—Puerto Vallarta

tree house resort
As kids we dream of having an amazing tree house, and adults we dream of vacation luxury. This is the best of both worlds. Airbnb

Open-air living meets modern vibes in this Puerto Vallarta four-bedroom hideaway. While there aren’t ocean views, this home does boast a sweeping deck set higher up, making the whole place feel like a treehouse. Plus, that deck sports a pool and a collection of sun loungers with partial shade thanks to the gumbo limbo tree anchoring the space.

Inside, find pops of character and color, from the bright, bold paintings to the collection of carved wooden masks.

Big Group Luxury—Isla Mujeres

Casa Isla Bajo villa
The more the merrier at this spacious property that feels like a miniature resort. Airbnb

The six-bedroom Casa Isla Bajo villa on Isla Mujeres caters to groups—literally. The in-house chef reaches out weeks ahead of your stay to plan menus based on your preferences, whether those be for light fare like just-caught fish or Mexican comfort foods like enchiladas. With meals taken care of, guests have more time to enjoy the pool, set steps from the water; take a plunge with a margarita while enjoying sea views.

Open Air Relaxation—Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo
Take a deep breath and appreciate the connection with nature here. Airbnb

We love how seamlessly the hacienda-style Villa Noche transitions to the outdoor living space—and right onto the beach. Part of the Las Palmas Luxury Villas boutique hotel, this villa has access to extra amenities, including several pools, a restaurant and a spread of lounge chairs and day beds on the sand.

Jungle Mansion—Cozumel

Cozumel
Spend the day exploring all that Cozumel has to offer, and then wind down at night in the pool or jacuzzi. Airbnb

This 5-bedroom private villa gets rave reviews for its lush outdoor patio—with pool and Jacuzzi—where curling vines, palms and planters pack the space with tropical greenery. Inside, the vibe is boho-eclectic, mixing Frida Kahlo murals with street signs, candelabras, chandeliers, oversize paintings and more for a collected, maximalist feel.

Modern and Simple—Todos Santos

Todos Santos
No, there’s no such thing as too many selfies and Instagram Reels at this fascinating concrete beach home. Airbnb

A departure from most beach homes, this modern, concrete two-bedroom space boasts a clean, minimalist design, lots of light, and thoughtful touches. It’s set in the town of Todos Santos on the Baja Peninsula, located about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas with a beach popular as much for surfing as it is sea turtle nests.

5 Tropical Resorts that are Perfect for a Quick Golf Getaway https://www.islands.com/story/resorts/tropical-resorts-perfect-for-quick-golf-getaway/ Tue, 20 Jul 2021 22:34:36 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=40794 Adding 18 holes to your vacation in paradise is always recommended. Especially if you’re visiting one of these destinations.

The Divi and Tamarjin Aruba Resort.
When the all-inclusive resort is renowned for spoiling guests, you shouldn’t be surprised that the course is a hidden delight. Divi and Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives

There’s nothing quite like a round of golf on a Caribbean course. The clear skies, light breezes, and warm sun always make for a perfect morning or afternoon of 18 or even nine holes, but the views really make the experience better than anything we’ll find back home. Listening to waves crash, deftly maneuvering between sun-bathing lizards, grabbing quick selfies on greens with breathtaking views—these are the perks offered on golf courses in paradise.

Of course, amazing golf courses aren’t just a Caribbean thing. If you’re looking to plan your next quick vacation around the links, we have some great Caribbean spots, sure, but we also have two others that are equally amazing. Now it’s just a matter of choosing.

Divi and Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives

A lot of people say that Aruba isn’t a golf destination, but I strongly disagree. The island only has two golf courses, sure, but this is a place that is perfect for a three-day weekend, and the nine-hole The Links at Divi Aruba is the kind of course you can play and enjoy two or three times without missing out on everything else this wonderful island has to offer.

The Summer Golf Package currently being offered by Divi and Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives is only available for booking through July 31, but it’s good for travel through October 31, which is great for those of us who cherish an endless summer season. Guests will enjoy 35 percent savings on rates plus a 15 percent discount on golf and club rentals, so there’s no need to lug those giant bags to the airport.

Best of all, a discount for lessons at the Feel Golf school is included. Here, you’ll meet Donald Ross, one of the best golf teachers I’ve ever met—he fixed my flaws in a matter of minutes and helped me fall in love with golf again—so don’t pass on the opportunity to meet this quirky Scottish swing doctor. Oh, and be mindful of the iguanas on the cart path.

The Buccaneer, St. Croix

Aerial view of The Buccaneer golf course.
Between its incredible views and generous fairways, this is a course any golfer can appreciate. The Buccaneer

Having recently had the immense pleasure of staying at The Buccaneer, St. Croix’s flagship resort, I was thrilled to experience so much of this under-the-radar USVI gem, but it was golf that sat at the top of my to-do list. I’d heard so many great things about this course, mostly that it’s wide open and designed to be very forgiving for those of us with the occasional monster slice. In fact, thanks to the broad fairways and my aforementioned Aruban lessons, I shot an 88 on my first round, so that should be all the convincing anyone needs.

What makes this Bob Joyce-designed course truly magical, though, is the layout. For starters, I was incredibly lucky no one was playing behind me as I stepped into the tee box on Hole 3, because the view here made my jaw drop. An 8-iron and short wedge shot later, I was on the green and once again captivated by the 360-degree spectacle before me. It’s so nice that golfers will have to be patient with the resort’s non-golfing guests who make the trek just for a selfie or two (I happily paused between holes to help a family with photos).

With 13 holes offering an ocean view, the toughest part isn’t the hike to your ball when you inevitably blast your drive a mile from the cart path. It’s fighting the urge to walk away from Hole 14 and find a spot on the sand just a few steps from the tee box.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort

Aerial view of the Ocean Course golf course at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico resort.
The 16th hole on the Ocean Course is considered by many people to be one of the best and most beautiful in the entire Caribbean. Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort

Why settle for one course when you can stay at a resort that offers two world-class courses? Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort’s Inclusive Package includes a bevy of perks, including daily meals, beverages, and discounts, but if your clubs are your most important travel partner, then it’s the comped green fee (one round per room) that’ll put some extra pop in your drive. And the unlimited use of the driving range will at least help you get loose before you make the ultimate decision: “Which course will I play first?”

Designed by Tom and George Fazio, the Ocean Course is highlighted by the natural beauty of both the Atlantic Ocean and the El Yunque Mountains, but when it comes to signature holes that every golfer should dream of playing, you won’t find many better than the 16th, which is bordered by the gorgeous golden sand.

With its wide fairways, the River Course is beneficial for building confidence in golfers of all ages and skill levels. And while everyone knows that you never turn down the chance to play a Greg Norman course, this one really takes the cake (bizcocho mojadito, if you prefer). The Shark designed this one to highlight the majesty of the Mameyes River, so try not to be too distracted.

Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

The golf course at the Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa
El Tinto was developed using Platinum Paspalum, AKA the “Cadillac of grass,” so remember to replace your divots. Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

We’re cheating a little here, because the celebrated El Tinto Golf Club isn’t actually part of Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa, but it’s close enough and no one said we can’t appreciate a great golf deal. And when it comes to a Nice Price course, there’s no way a golfer of any experience level should miss a shot to play here. Certainly not if the green fees are included in the resort rates.

All guests will receive a free round, but those who stay in the Serenity Club Suites for at least three nights will enjoy complimentary golf cart use as well, but why stop there? And why stay for only three days? Anyone booking four to seven nights will get to play two rounds, in addition to some other perks, so it shouldn’t take “Fluff” Cowan to know this is the right play.

As for the course, Price designed El Tinto to be challenging enough for the best golfers among us, but also fun for those of us who don’t mind losing a few sleeves in the five lakes.

Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort

The Santa Maria Hotel golf course.
We love beaches and forests, but there’s nothing wrong with a spectacular urban setting, too. Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort

Even if you’re a casual golfer with a handicap as high as the afternoon temperature, you should never pass on the chance to play on vacation—even if for the Instagram clout. The most average courses in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America are still better than the cookie cutter links you play back home, so imagine what it’s like to play the amazing Santa Maria Golf and Country Club at The Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort in Panama City.

If Panama isn’t already on your travel wish list, it needs to be—mainly because of this celebrated resort that offers access to the best of this bustling destination. Looking for luxury? It’s here. Romance? Oh yeah. Incredible food? Bring an appetite. But this is all about golf, and this course is as beautiful as it gets. The Stay and Play experience includes accommodations and daily breakfast, as well as one round per night, so if your hands blister easily be sure to bring enough tape for at least 54 holes.
