A street in Reykjavík, Iceland
From the city life to the lagoons, this destination offers so much beauty and culture. Jessica Kelly

When planning and booking your trip to Iceland, the first step is getting there. One of the best tips we can offer is to leave JFK’s crowds behind and fly directly to Iceland out of Stewart International Airport with PLAY. The company started in 2019 and offers travelers a variety of flights between North America and Europe, and that includes the always magical and popular Land of Ice and Fire.

What makes PLAY such a good choice is how the company recognizes the needs of its customers. Passengers can choose an à la cart deal where they can pay for an upgraded experience with plenty of amenities and snacks, or they can fly to Iceland on a budget, which leaves extra cash for more adventures. Beyond the tickets, travelers can enjoy an elevated experience, adding checked bags, an inflight food and beverage credit, and a seat with extra leg room—all definitely worth it.

In addition to PLAY providing a pleasant travel experience, the company values sustainability by reducing fuel consumption, making efforts to cut back on waste, and offset carbon emissions. That allows for an even more peaceful flight.

Where to Stay

Once you arrive in Reykjavík, Iceland, check into the Grandi by Center Hotels. The property is in a great location and boasts an industrial, stylish feel. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, with plenty of modern touches. The hotel has strong WiFi and breakfast for travelers on the go. Best of all, the friendly staff at the front desk is always willing to offer suggestions and advice on how to use public transportation, where to eat, and what to do.

Where to Eat

A hot dog from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur in Iceland
Who goes all the way to Iceland for a hot dog? Everyone should. Jessica Kelly

For starters, the restaurant at the Grandi by Center Hotels, Héðinn Kitchen & Bar, is a great option, especially for the night that you arrive, so you don’t have to worry about getting around town. You can just settle in and enjoy delicious dishes like the ribeye with fresh herb butter and grilled padron pepper, a side dish of potatoes with cheese foam and Jerusalem artichokes, and a cocktail like the Lúpina with lavender gin, blanc vermouth, and Creme de Violette.

The ambiance at Monkeys Reykjavik is stunning with beautiful floral patterns, striking furniture, art decorating the walls, and unique light fixtures. The food is as impressive as the décor. The wagyu nigiri with foie gras and garlic melts in your mouth with the even marbling of fat. The rack of lamb with pepper polenta, roasted corn salsa, and miso hollandaise sauce was perfectly cooked and the fresh scallops and foie gras with crispy chicken skin was the perfect blend of textures. Save room for the Monkeys mandarin, their famous dessert.

Fish Company (Fiskfélagið) is a wonderful option for trying some local dishes, like the sherry marinated reindeer carpaccio with cepes purée, crispy oyster mushrooms, foie gras, hazelnut, and parmigiano. The fresh salad with deep fried langoustine and seared tiger prawns in a creamy garlic dressing (with salty mixed olives, cherry tomatoes, and parmigiano reggiano) and creamy lobster soup (with langoustine and chestnut paste, apples, and marinated celery) are two delicious dishes that let the Icelandic lobster, langoustines, shine.

With all the delicious food to try in Iceland, a hot dog might not be first on your list, but a visit to Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur should be. The dogs in Iceland aren’t what you may think, as they are primarily made up of lamb with a little high-quality beef and pork. The famous stand dates to the 1930s, and these well-known dogs are doctored with raw onions, crispy fried onions, and ketchup on the roll, and after tucking the dog into the bun, it’s then topped with a remoulade and mustard sauce.

Íslenski barinn is a great place to stop if you want to try some truly unique Icelandic cuisine, including Viking-inspired foods like fermented shark and dried fish with butter. There are dishes like puffin on Icelandic crumpet with berries, remoulade, fried onions, pickled red onions, and chili peppers and fin whale on Icelandic crumpet with langreud, pickles, remoulade, onion rings, and parsley.

For dessert or a sweet snack, Baka Baka has a wide selection of donuts and treats that can’t be missed. The raspberry donuts filled with a raspberry cream were phenomenal, the perfect pairing for a latte on the go.

What to Do

Puffins in Iceland
Visitors can be entertained for hours by these delightful birds. Jessica Kelly

The Puffin Express Tour is barely a 10-minute walk from the hotel in Reykjavik, and it will take visitors on a boat trip to puffin island (aka Akurey). It doesn’t take long to get to the site, where you will see so many puffins floating in the water, flying at speeds of nearly 55 mph, and settling in, nesting on the rocks along the water. It’s such a special experience, and worth every penny. If you want to fill your itinerary with wildlife encounters, they also offer a Whale Watching Excursion, on which guests voyage in search of humpbacks in the wild.

When you’re visiting Iceland for the first time, you have to make time for a Golden Circle Express Tour. This special bus trip takes guests to famous sites along the circle, like the geothermal Geysir to see activity at Strokkur, Thingvellir National Park, and Gullfoss with an opportunity to hike into the mist of the powerful falls. The café inside the visiting center at the Geysir has some delicious fish stew, loaded with huge, tender pieces of cod, perfect for a quick bite before jumping on the bus.

A waterfall in Iceland
The waterfalls are breathtaking and make phenomenal selfie spots. Jessica Kelly

There’s a lot to see in Iceland and it’s difficult to fit it all in, but I can’t recommend the South Shore Excursion enough. You hit sites and destinations while enjoying the ride, taking in the stunning landscapes and visiting multiple Foss waterfalls. You’ll also ride through Vík, a small village boasting boulders and cliffs. Stop along the way at sites like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss to hike around the waterfalls, legendary Eyjafjallajökull, and the black sand of Reynisfjara (just be cautious of the sneaker waves that give the beach it’s dangerous reputation) where many photos will be taken of the Reynisdrangar rock formations.

A black sand beach in Iceland
There aren’t many black sand beaches in the world, so this is a must-visit location. Jessica Kelly

A relaxing spa has been added to the industrial area near Kópavogur, and Sky Lagoon begs to be explored and enjoyed. The geothermal spa has an infinity pool with a waterfall and a seven-step ritual involving steam rooms, a cold plunge, body exfoliator, sauna, mist, and hot showers. The experience leaves your skin silky smooth as you head back to relax in the warm water with a drink in your hand.

Blue Lagoon in Iceland
Blue Lagoon’s water isn’t just beautiful—it might be magical. Jessica Kelly

When you’re in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon is also an absolute must. This natural body of water is located in a lava field and has a soft, baby blue hue to it from the minerals, leaving your skin feeling radiant. Apply the face mask and grab a drink from the bar, as you can be healthy and order a green juice or treat yourself to a beer, before walking around and exploring the lagoon.

And don’t forget to explore Reykjavík. Set aside time to walk around the city and you’ll encounter coffee shops, local boutiques, restaurants, and exciting landmarks like public murals, the Sun Voyager, the Hallgrímskirkja Church, and Rainbow Street. Stop into a local cafe to try a ponnukokur, an Icelandic pancake similar to a crepe.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing the Eternal City from this luxurious property. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

When the 2023 Ryder Cup begins on September 29, golf fans across the world will undoubtedly take one look at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club and decide that Rome needs to be on the travel wish list. Obviously, thanks to The White Lotus and the general awesomeness of the Amalfi Coast, Italy has already been one of the hottest tourism destinations in the world over the last year, but at the very least it is about to become a haven for golfers who crave the most beautiful courses as well.

You don’t need to be a scienziato missilistico, though, to know that golf will only fill a few hours on what should be the itinerary of your dreams. That’s why Marco Simone will need to share the spotlight with a majestic property set in the heart of the Eternal City—especially one that already excels at creating an authentic, educational experience that will make guests feel like they’re in their home away from home.

That property is Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

As the Old Saying Goes

A view of Rome from a deck at Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, in Italy.
With so much to explore and appreciate, guests likely won’t know from where to begin. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

If St. Ambrose had a nickel for every time someone used some form of the phrase, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” his descendants would never work a day in their lives. But first-time visitors probably don’t know what it is that Romans actually do, so that’s why this spectacular hotel goes the distance in offering “La Dolce Vita.”

Not only can guests experience Rome from the seats of a classic Italian automobile, but unlike the Clark Griswolds of the world, they’ll have only the best local guides explaining the importance of each sight and landmark while also serving as chauffeur. (If you haven’t seen Nick Kroll’s latest Netflix special, he has a great bit about not being able to drive stick in Italy, and it’ll only reassure your desire to sit back and let an expert do the work.)

Don’t spread out too much, though, because guests will also be joined by a private photographer, who will be capturing epic photos in front of those landmarks so they can come home in a special photo album. That’s way better than keeping it all on a memory card in your Insta360.

Make It an Imperial Affair

Come for the VIP experience and stay in a setting that redefines comfort. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

There’s no wrong choice when it comes to booking accommodations here, but guests who want the VIP feeling and the ability to bypass the hustle and bustle of the main lobby should join the Imperial Club. With a private floor and myriad spoils, this exclusive option is highlighted by the Imperial Rome View rooms that offer balconies with arguably the best views in the city. In fact, some might feel like the only things missing are a toga and gold laurel.

But Let’s Not Forget the Golf

Hole 8 of the Marco Simone golf course in Italy.
This course is highlighted by the stunning array of colors. Marco Simone

What’s great about a course hosting an event as big and important as the Ryder Cup is that Marco Simone has never looked better. The fairways and greens are practically glowing ahead of September’s big showdown, and this will also be the home of the next Italian Open as well. Naturally, it’s going to be tough to get a tee time here during certain stretches.

The good news is the hotel is offering a special golf experience ahead of the huge event, so anyone bringing their clubs to Rome’s most spectacular property will have the chance to see just how well they’d hang with the world’s best. At the very least, they’ll have some spectacular selfies in front of Marco Simone castle and St. Peter’s Dome to share while the pros are handling their business.

This Might Be the Most Incredible James Bond Travel Experience Yet https://www.islands.com/europe-mediterranean/james-bond-black-tomato-filming-locations/ Tue, 11 Apr 2023 21:48:29 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=46805 Black Tomato has teamed with Eon Productions to create incredible, in-depth itineraries for fans of the world’s greatest super spy.

Who knows when we’ll see James Bond on the big screen again? With Daniel Craig having hanged up his tuxedo for the final time following the very permanent ending of No Time to Die, we’re still no closer to learning which actor will fill his form-fitting tactical shirts than we were several years ago when oddsmakers were giving the role to Idris Elba and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, as well as the Toms, both Hiddleston and Hardy. And with Warner Bros. giving Henry Cavill a little extra free time, a lot of people are praying he trades his cape for an Aston Martin.

There’s always another alternative to watching the movies, though, and that is living the James Bond experience. After all, the film franchise has taken 007 all over the world, to some of the most beautiful destinations, and we should be thrilled to follow in his footsteps. However, planning such trips takes a lot of effort, so we’d need some experts to step in and make it a little more convenient.

Enter: Black Tomato. The luxury travel concept has partnered with Eon Productions to create the most authentic 007 experiences—of course without the whole saving the world aspect. Instead, fans can book itineraries that will not only take them to some of the most memorable, luxurious filming locations, but also allow them to safely participate in their own action scenes.

For example, travelers who want to get their pulses racing can spend time learning moves from Daniel Craig’s stunt double, racing an Aston Martin at Casino Royale filming location Millbrook Proving Ground, and hitting the Thames on a Sunseeker Superhawk 34, which was featured in the opening of The World is Not Enough.

Experiences include making the one and only Vesper Martini and exploring the River Thames by speed boat. Rick Barrett/Hugo Sousa

Anyone who’d rather drink like Bond will be especially excited to do the impossible: drink the legendary Vesper Martini. This has been an impossible feat considering the key ingredient, Kina Lillet, was discontinued long ago. Sure, there have been replacements and substitutions, but for the real thing, this opportunity to take a martini masterclass means guests will be among the last people to ever try the real deal Vesper. They’ll also tour the Champagne Bollinger Chateau and Estate, sampling Bond’s preferred La Grand Année vintage in the process, and top it all off with a candlelit dinner in a Murano glass factory, where keen observers will spot the Coppa Barovier from Moonraker.

Obviously, style also plays a huge role in the Bond experience, so a bespoke suit fitting will take place in St. James, before fans head to Lake Como to tour some private villas and then Venice’s Torre dell’Orologio clocktower, which was also featured in Moonraker. Finally, the accommodations speak for themselves, as travelers will be staying at Das CentralVilla PassalacquaBelmond Hotel Cipriani, and The Corinthia.

This is but a taste of the Black Tomato Bond experience, as fans can book any number of experiences. There’s even a chance to meet Bond Girl and actress Carole Ashby, who will share her personal, behind-the-scenes stories from Octopussy and A View to a Kill.

When it comes to the chaotic obsessions of sports fandom, the more irrational among us will travel all over the world to cheer on our favorite teams. But just how far are we willing to go for a team that doesn’t actually exist? That’s what fans of Apple TV+’s hit series Ted Lasso will spend the next week asking themselves, as AFC Richmond faithful everywhere wait patiently for Airbnb’s coolest listing to go live.

On Tuesday, March 21, at 1 PM ET, booking will open for travelers to stay at the Crown and Anchor Pub, the favorite hangout of Greyhound fans. In reality, this establishment is known as The Prince’s Head, but for the three dates available—October 23, 24, and 25—it will be transformed once more into the show’s pub, and guests will be virtually greeted by the lovable Mae, played by Annette Badland.

Once checked in, AFC Richmond’s best fans will then enjoy a variety of Ted Lasso-inspired fun, including:

 • Enjoying pub fare while discussing their favorite moments from the show.
 • Cheering on the beloved local Richmond sports teams, decked out in AFC Richmond gear, of course.
 • Taking part in a competitive round of darts—whether left- or right-handed—or aiming for the highest score on the pinball machine.
 • Taking a seat at Ted’s favorite table in the pub and challenging their fellow guests to a round of chess.
 • Showing off their karaoke skills with a rendition of their favorite song.
 • Trying those biscuits and enjoying them over some English tea (or as Ted calls it “hot brown water”).

The most important thing for potential guests to understand before booking is that this is not a contest. All aspects of travel must be handled by the visitors, just as they would with any Airbnb booking. Also, this thing is going to book in light speed, so have those refresh-clicking fingers ready.

The pub boasts two bedrooms with two beds and one bathroom, accommodating as many as four guests. With a prime location in Richmond, it is within walking distance to plenty of retail stores, and Coach Lasso’s apartment on the Richmond Green is also nearby. That makes an excellent selfie opportunity if guests can find the building.

No pets or parties are allowed, lest visitors wish to earn a red card. Other than that, it’s Richmond til we die when season three kicks off this week.

Four Incredible Sicilian Villas for Living Your Own ‘White Lotus’ Experience https://www.islands.com/europe-mediterranean/italy-sicily-white-lotus-luxury-villas/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 18:57:11 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=46276 When privacy is the most important vacation element, luxury doesn’t have to take a backseat.

An aerial view of Rocca delle Tre Contrade, a luxurious 12-bedroom villa located in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
There’s so much more to Taormina than just ‘The White Lotus’—all you need is the right villa. The Thinking Traveller

Let’s state the obvious: The White Lotus is an absolute smash hit. Thanks to the success of the first season, guests have been flocking to Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, at least a little more than usual. Season two was just as entertaining and inspiring, because it will be a while before any of us can get a room at the spectacular San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel. And if you’re up to date on the rumors, then you know now might be the time to book a stay at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto.

But let’s not give up on that dream trip to Sicily just yet. While rooms at the Four Seasons or some of the other beautiful resorts and hotels in and around Taormina are in high-demand, The Thinking Traveller has a pretty great alternative: luxury villas. Specifically, there are four properties that are ideal for any kind of getaway, from a romantic escape to the dream family vacation. Just try to keep all the drama to the actors, okay?

Rocca delle Tre Contrade

The private pool at Rocca delle Tre Contrade, a luxurious 12-bedroom villa located in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Guests can lounge by the pool and enjoy the spectacular views of Taormina without having to deal with resort crowds. The Thinking Traveller

Let’s start big and bold with an aristocratic estate that screams the destination wedding of your dreams. With a dozen bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the option to be fully serviced, this villa basically becomes a resort, taking luxury to new heights—and I’m not talking about the views offered by this elevated setting. But the scenery is phenomenal here, as guests will undoubtedly fall in love with the breathtaking looks at the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.

From the infinity pool to the wine room, the amenities in this villa are astounding. There’s even a gym for getting in a morning workout, but most guests will probably want to break a sweat exploring the magnificent grounds.

Don Arcangelo all’Olmo

The pool at Don Arcangelo all'Olmo, a luxurious 12-bedroom villa in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Surrounded by beautiful gardens, this villa puts an emphasis on seclusion. The Thinking Traveller

Want something that feels even more secluded? This 12-bedroom villa is equally majestic and also capable of being fully serviced, but guests will especially love how this property seems to be built into its gorgeous, lush surroundings. Friends and family can argue over who gets which room, but the bulk of the vacation time will be spent celebrating in the common spaces, especially outdoors.

Arguably the best aspect, at least for anyone visiting Italy for the incredible food, is having a chef on-site to prepare meals each day, if requested. There isn’t much better than authentic cuisine with views of the sea.

La Prora

The outdoor, poolside dining area at La Prora, a seven-bedroom luxury villa in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Smaller groups will enjoy plenty of spaces for intimate moments at this villa. The Thinking Traveller

Sleeping up to 14 guests in seven bedrooms, this villa has been upgraded to blend its historic elements with modern luxuries. Guests will probably want to call dibs on the ground floor rooms since they all open onto a shaded terrace with all the furnishings required for a lazy day of simply enjoying life. However, that would cut into pool time, so plan accordingly.

Between the stylish design and décor and, again, the stunning views, this villa is almost guaranteed to cause multiple people in your party to attempt to stay forever.

Villa Carmine

The pool and outdoor space at the three-bedroom Villa Carmine in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Guests who want to be near the action in Taormina will appreciate this stylish villa. The Thinking Traveller

Owned by the same family for decades, this three-bedroom villa is as authentic as it is luxurious. Smaller groups or families who want to explore as much as relax will appreciate the setting, as it is located right in the heart of Taormina. Everything is within walking distance, from the landmarks to the city’s best restaurants, and some of the region’s oldest cities and nearby heritage sites make for memorable day trips.

But little will top waking up each morning and staring out into the city, as it will be all the inspiration everyone needs to start a new adventure.

10 Great Reasons to Island Hop in Malta https://www.islands.com/story/europe-mediterranean/10-great-reasons-to-island-hop-in-malta/ Tue, 22 Nov 2022 15:33:56 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=43486 This Mediterranean paradise is packed with adventure, history, and incredible food. But the key is knowing where and when to go.

The post 10 Great Reasons to Island Hop in Malta appeared first on Islands.

]]>
Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is one of the main reasons why people love visiting Malta, but there’s so much more to this remarkable destination. Visit Malta

Looking to check a few more islands off your list? How about Malta, Gozo, and Comino? Malta is the best known of the three, while its sister islands are definitely under-the-radar—but they shouldn’t be. Because the Mediterranean can be enjoyed year-round, this trio of intriguing isles, part of the Maltese archipelago, has much to offer, whether you visit in November, April, or August or are interested in history, architecture, sailing, or food and wine.

They can easily be enjoyed over four or five days, with the main island of Malta as your base and easy day trips by boat to neighboring Gozo and Comino, but the capital Valletta is also a popular cruise port if you primarily want to experience the 121-square-mile main island’s cities and harbors.

Here are 10 great reasons to island hop in Malta.

The arid, honey-hued landscape

Gozo
Adventure awaits in Gozo, where a day tour can include quad biking followed by a visit to the refreshing water. Visit Malta

The name Malta is actually derived from the Greek word “melite” (honey) because as far as the eye can see this archipelago’s land mass is a warm honey-beige color—at least for nine months of the year. The islands—there are seven, but only Malta, Gozo, and Comino are inhabited—get more than 300 days of sunshine each year and daytime temperatures range from the low-to-mid 90s in July, August, and September to the low 60s in the Mediterranean’s quiet winter season. Rain during the winter months imbues the landscape with a vibrant green hue just in time for a spring visit.

But by July, the entire island is golden, interspersed with ubiquitous prickly pear cacti, large twisted and sculptural bushes with fruit that ripens to hues of tangerine, orange, and red. The Maltese put some of this natural bounty to use by enjoying the ripened fruit raw and making it into a potent liqueur known as bajtra. The dry, rocky landscape is also ideal for quad biking and rentals or tours are a popular way to explore both Malta and Gozo—just pack a hat and plenty of sunscreen.

The incredibly blue water

It’s not an exaggeration to say that the aquamarine and azure-hued bays in this region of the Mediterranean will have you at hello. There are swimming spots galore, from golden sand beaches on the north shore of Malta, such as Paradise Bay and Little Armier, to the secluded blue-green depths of Peter’s Pool near Marsaxlokk Bay.

But the reason many people visit Malta is a vibrant saltwater paradise known as the Blue Lagoon. Located in the channel between Comino (population: 2) and uninhabited Cominotto, this vivid yet soothing oasis is the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely swim as you snap photos that will make your water-loving Instagram followers envious. Half-day and day tours are available from both Malta and Gozo and a dip here is especially refreshing in the heat of Maltese summer.

The views of Valletta Harbour

Valletta
Sightseers will instantly fall madly in love with Valletta. Visit Malta

When visiting by cruise ship—Celebrity, Princess, Oceania, Azamara, Norwegian, Viking, and others offer itineraries that call on Valletta in 2022—prepare to be seduced as you arrive and depart. And while in port you’ll be surrounded by the unique architectural beauty of one of world’s largest natural harbors.

Valletta is built around it, with its historic heart just steps away and sweeping views of the water and golden limestone buildings of the old fortified city of Birgu and Fort Ricasoli available from the ramparts of the Barrakka Gardens. If enjoying a land visit, land and water continually converge as you explore the historic district.

Game of Thrones (and more) filming locations

Whether you’re a fan of the machinations in Game of Thrones or the fantastical muscles of Popeye (the ones sported by Robin Williams in the 1980 feature film), much of the action happened right here in Malta. The former was filmed in Mdina, Rabat, Fort Riscoli, and on the island of Gozo, while the latter shot scenes in seaside Sweethaven Village constructed just for the movie.

Also shot here: 2004′s Troy, starring Brad Pitt, and 2000′s Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe.

The elaborate churches and cathedrals

Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta
St. John’s Co-Cathedral was designed by Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, who was also responsible for the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta. Visit Malta

Malta is a devoutly Catholic island nation and everywhere you turn, there’s a church dome or steeple in view—one for almost every day of the year. Malta was ruled by the Knights of Malta (also known as the Order of St. John and the Knights Hospitalier) from 1530 to 1798 and the Catholic military order had a lasting influence on the island’s religious history.

A must-see in Valletta is the impressively gilded Baroque-style Co-Cathedral of St. John, built between 1572 and 1577 and home to works by Caravaggio. Another church on Malta that’s worth a peek is the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, commonly known as the Rotunda of Mosta. It’s a striking structure with a massive dome and columned portico where on April 9, 1942, a German bomb fell during mass and landed inside—but didn’t explode. And on Gozo, the Ta’ Pinu Basilica in Gharb is an architectural beauty built in the early 20th century as a national shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.

The fresh local bread, cheese, honey, and olive oil

Enjoying a Mediterranean diet when in the Med is the way to go, and on Malta the arid climate means locally grown delicacies include tomatoes and olives, which complement locally harvested honey and fresh jams, locally made cheese, and crusty Maltese sourdough bread (the traditional version is known as ftira) and an abundance of fresh seafood.

Menus around the islands also include traditional pastizzi, a flaky filo-style pastry filled with either sweet ricotta or mashed peas.

The Megalithic Temples

Ġgantija
The two temples of Ġgantija are believed to have been constructed between 3600 and 2500 BC. Visit Malta

Malta is home to something quite rare: seven unique megalithic temples (Ġgantija, Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, Skorba, Ta’ Ħaġrat, and Tarxien) some of which date back 5,600 years and are among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth (yes, older than the Great Pyramids and Stonehenge). Together, they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most are located on Malta and can be visited individually by car or bus or on half-day prehistoric Malta tours.

On Gozo, the temple at Ggantija (the oldest with some giant stones weighing more than 50 tons) has a small museum containing excellent examples of pottery, statues, and jewelry and can be enjoyed during a day tour from Malta or overnight stay on Gozo.

The towering limestone cliffs

Gozo
Travelers with adventurous souls will find thrills and challenges on the cliffs of Gozo. Visit Malta

The geology of Malta, Gozo, and Comino offers plenty of nature-made drama, too. All three islands are known for their millions-of-years-old limestone cliffs, especially the photogenic cliffs at Xlendi Bay on Malta and those located along the southern side of Gozo. The latter tower almost 400 feet above the sea and are best enjoyed on a morning or afternoon sailing trip (most of these excursions also stop for swim time at the Blue Lagoon).

For a bit more adventure, visitors can also experience the cliffs on a hiking, rock-climbing, or abseiling excursion on Malta, Gozo, or Comino.

The ancient capital of Mdina

Mdina
Known today as the “Silent City,” Mdina only has a few hundred residents, but she welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Visit Malta

If the bustle of Valletta gets to be too much, escape for a few hours to the island’s original capital, the walled hilltop city of Mdina, located about 20 minutes away. Here, you’ll wander narrow medieval lanes and enjoy 18th-century Baroque architecture (you’ll enter through the splendid circa-1724 Vilhena Gate) in this now sparsely populated ancient city. Brightly painted blue, red, and green doors pop against champagne-hued limestone walls and the ornate St. Paul’s Cathedral is the city’s heart.

The unique cultural mix

Given its strategic location, Malta has for thousands of years been coveted by conquering invaders and colonists, first the Greeks and Phoenicians, then the Romans and the Knights of St. John, and later Napoleon and the British Empire. Both English and Maltese (which developed from a dialect of Arabic and is the only form of Arabic to be written in the Latin alphabet) are official languages and this island nation that declared its independence from Great Britain in 1964 is truly a one-of-a-kind mix of European, Arabic, and British influences—with something to capture every visitor’s imagination.

Where to Stay: Malta offers a wide range of accommodations. For an upscale stay in Valletta, consider the five-star boutique property Rosselli—AX Privilege or the landmark The Phoenicia Malta. Travelers will also find familiar brands offering waterfront options in the popular St. Julians resort area: the Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa, the Westin Dragonara Resort, and the Hyatt Regency Malta.

Mykonos
Mykonos is a place oozing with style, and even the rental properties look the part. Airbnb

From the hillsides aglow with lights after sunset to the sprawling beaches offering neat rows of chaise lounges, the Greek Islands offer a perfectly magical summer escape. Plus, with 227 islands to choose from, there is a destination to match every vacation whim, from the clubs and packed social scene of Mykonos to the low-key vibe and unspoiled nature of Naxos.

Here are 10 of our favorite Airbnb rentals to book in the Greek Islands.

Six-Bedroom Stunner in Mykonos

The infinity pool is all “WOW” factor at this Mykonos six-bedroom villa (above). Facing west, it’s the perfect spot for Champagne at sunset before taxiing the seven minutes into Mykonos, home of most of the island’s nightclubs. The inside, sprawling more than 3,700 sq. ft., brings in Cycladic style, including white ceiling beams and rounded archways.

As a bonus, three of the six bedrooms offer king beds. Cute as the interior is, you’ll spend most of your time outside, soaking in the pool or dipping into mezze at the 10-person outdoor dining table. Yes, a beach is close by—Agios Stefanos is a little over a mile away.

Luxe Villa Steps from Ftelia Beach

beach house
Guests will fall in love with the views—and the poolside bean bag chairs. Airbnb

It’s easy to assume Mykonos is nothing more than a nightclub hotspot, but it’s also rich in history, dating back to 1000 B.C. when the Ionians called it home. At this upscale, six-bedroom villa, the stone-wall backdrop encircling the pool—with sea views—of course doesn’t date that far back, but nods nonetheless to the destination’s undeniably storied past. As for the location, this home is 30 strides from Ftelia Beach, a relaxing spot favored by local windsurfers that is also said to be the burial site of Iliad hero Ajax the Locrian.

When you’re not exploring the island, enjoy the elemental touches in the home, from the grown-up bean bag chaise loungers at poolside to the wooden pergola outdoor dining area. Upgrade and relax further with the services of a private chef, butler, yoga instructor, private driver, and/or a helicopter pilot taking you on an island tour.

Blue Windmill Villa in Santorini

windmill
In this villa, the charm is only outdone by the views of the sunsets. Airbnb

Tucked away from the hustle of Santorini, this unique stay in the town of Oia—famous for its fiery sunsets—offers sanctuary with a twist. You’re sleeping inside a windmill where ample windows showcase sea views (and, yes, this style of dwelling may hold extra appeal for fans of the Bachelorette franchise and Hannah Brown’s season).

The interior also holds a bit of storybook cottage appeal, from the countryside-style kitchen to the makeup table set against a blush-colored wall. We’re also taken with the outside, with its bean-shaped swimming pool, hammock, and built-in dining nook.

Sleek and Modern Cavo Dago Villa

Cavo dago
Step out of bed and right into the infinity pool. Airbnb

A departure from Greek style, this six-bedroom luxury stay offers indoor-outdoor living flowing toward the infinity pool overlooking the town of Chania, Crete. All six bedrooms feature king beds and en-suite baths, so if traveling in a group, there’s no need to establish a pecking-order hierarchy—everyone experiences the utmost in luxury. What’s more, glass sliding panels in the bedrooms open to the pool deck, allowing for easy access and greater flow.

As an Airbnb Luxe offering, this villa gives you more, from the sauna to the espresso machine. Concierge service and daily housekeeping are included; a private chef, massage therapist, grocery delivery, island excursions, and airport transfers can all be added for a fee.

Aelia Private Cave Villa

pool
Romance awaits in this stylish one-bedroom villa. Airbnb

Built into the steep hillside of Vourvoulos on the island of Santorini, this one-bedroom villa merges chic style with the unique experience of sleeping in a cave. The rounded, white-walled interior offers a cozy hideaway, opening to a patio with a Jacuzzi, sunbeds, and views of the Aegean Sea.

Five-Bedroom Villa in Aliki

villa
Greece just became a family getaway with this larger property. Airbnb

This modern five-bedroom villa delivers clean lines and minimalist style—with just a few quirky touches, including hanging wire lights that are but an outline of a lamp, to the Greek evil eye pillows. Accommodating 10 guests, this property remains a standout on the island of Paros for its style, as its pool overlooks the hillside and its attentive host.

The island itself is one of the lesser touristed of the Greek Islands, yet still offers charming villages, uncrowded beaches, and diversions such as scuba diving and windsurfing.

Perfect Jacuzzi View of Santorini

jacuzzi
Be sure to pick up a few bottles of champagne for enjoying these views. Airbnb

Set along the hillside of Thira, this three-bedroom gem grants epic views of the Aegean Sea as well as the nearby city—a perfectly magical combination come sunset and beyond. The heated jacuzzi sits at the patio’s edge, letting you enjoy your champagne along with some more bubbles.

We love that daily breakfast is included so you can sleep in without rushing off to find coffee and nourishment before setting off to tour for the day.

New in Naxos

naxos
This new home was designed to still feel like it has been there for decades. Airbnb

This new construction four-bedroom villa, set on the island of Naxos, feels like it’s been long part of the local scenery thanks to thoughtful design that blends seamlessly with local aesthetics. The pool and patio serve as a property standout, with day beds and sunshade sails the color of sand, creating a neutral, calming palette against the arid Mediterranean landscape.

Plus, the home is a two-minute walk from Plaka Beach, a golden-sand paradise that’s never crowded, yet offers a handful of mom-and-pop eateries. Take Nikos and Maria’s, for example, which serves cold beer plus fresh fare like chicken-and-vegetable kebabs and arugula salads topped with prosciutto.

Tiny and Sweet in Crete

minimalist home
When all you need is the company of someone special… and, still, the amazing views. Airbnb

Set inland, this minimalist tiny home brings together modern design with the relaxation and escapism of the Greek countryside—think olive, cyprus, juniper, and oleander trees. The well-thought-out, one-bedroom space packs everything you’d need for a stay in any season on the island of Crete, from the canvas sun lounge chairs on the deck to the compact wood-burning stove inside.

Room-darkening shades help you sleep soundly, and the full kitchen lets you wake to make coffee and breakfast before venturing out for the day.

Sea Views and Simplicity

Airbnb

For those traveling solo or with another couple, this two-bedroom Cycladic home on Paros is a smart choice, setting you up with sweeping sea views, a generous shaded patio and a bright, airy interior heavy on charm. We love the softer touches, from the hanging chair in the living room to the macrame bedside lamps—all at a highly affordable rate.

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon vs Sky Lagoon—How Do They Compare? https://www.islands.com/europe-mediterranean/iceland-blue-lagoon-sky-lagoon/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 17:27:32 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=45467 One is iconic and the other brand new, but both offer a geothermal spa experience that can be enjoyed during a visit to Reykjavik. Here’s what to expect at both.

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon
Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is the stuff of social media legends, but there are great reasons why millions of people have visited this refreshing landmark. Blue Lagoon

There are certain things you just have to do when in Iceland—and soaking in the Blue Lagoon, the otherworldly geothermal playground that ranks among the country’s top tourist attractions, is one of them. But now there’s another steaming, soothing and, yes, scenic spa option that’s closer to Reykjavik, Sky Lagoon.

If you’re planning to visit this island nation, which is nicknamed “The Land of Fire and Ice” and is home to 600 natural hot springs, should you head to the warm, silky waters of Blue Lagoon or give the modern and stylized Sky Lagoon a try? We’ve been to both and here’s what you can expect.

Blue Lagoon

You’ve probably seen photos of the Blue Lagoon on social media and thought, “I definitely need to do that!” Millions of other travelers have decided the same thing, making this visually stunning geothermal spa so popular that advance reservations are absolutely necessary. Bookings are for a one-hour arrival window and the Blue Lagoon is open 365 days a year. It’s a fun option for a family adventure and children as young as 2 years are welcome, although kids ages 8 and younger must wear floaties.

Location: Blue Lagoon is a rather remote oasis on the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is also home to Iceland’s international gateway, Keflavik Airport. It’s about a 50-minute drive from downtown Reykjavik or 20 minutes from Keflavik. What is unrivaled is the sheer drama of the surrounding black-lava landscape, formed by centuries of volcanic eruptions.

Blue Lagoon
Guests will enjoy a variety of amenities and experiences, including the In-Water Mask Bar and float therapy. Blue Lagoon

History and Facts: Slip into the Blue Lagoon and you’ll float in 2.4 million gallons of geothermal seawater with a temperature averaging 98 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s as hot or even hotter than a whirlpool or jacuzzi. The water is sourced from deep underground and was first enjoyed decades ago when, in 1974, a lagoon unexpectedly formed in the Svartsengi lava field next to a geothermal power plant.

Scientists began to study the beneficial properties of the mineral-rich water and the original reservoir continued to attract wellness-focused Icelanders until 1999 when the Blue Lagoon was relocated to its present location. It was enlarged in 2016 and now covers 93,646 sq. ft. In 2018, the award-winning Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland, a luxury resort with a 62-room hotel, subterranean spa, and the panoramic fine-dining Moss restaurant, opened.

The Experience: Once you’ve showered and changed into your swimsuit in the locker room, follow signs to the steaming lagoon, which is set amid a dramatic volcanic landscape and ringed by wooden boardwalks. The water is a surreal milky blue hue and is naturally enriched with silica, algae, and minerals. Stepping into it for the first time is like nothing else on Earth—a soothing cocoon of warmth set against a backdrop straight out of a sci-fi movie. Water depths range from about 2.6 feet at the edges of the lagoon to 4.7 feet towards the center. The only caveat is the water’s distinct sulphur smell, but after a few minutes it’s likely that you’ll hardly notice it.

Aside from soaking while enjoying the stunning setting, there are several in-lagoon experiences to try. The most Instagram-worthy is the In-Water Mask Bar, where you can grab handfuls of goopy white silica mud and apply it to your face and body for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off. To quench your thirst as you soak, you can swim or wade over to the In-Water Bar for a selection of juices, water, beer, and wine; there’s a limit of three alcoholic drinks per person and you’ll wear an electronic bracelet that records your purchases and acts as a key to your locker. You can also choose to stand beneath a geothermal cascade at the Lagoon Waterfall or enjoy the soothing warmth of dry or moist heat in a sauna or an earthen Steam Cave.

Lava restaurant
Step out of the water and into Lava, a restaurant offering fresh Icelandic culinary staples. Blue Lagoon

The Amenities and Souvenirs: You can add onto your Blue Lagoon immersion with optional experiences such as Float Therapy (from $178 for 45 minutes) that combines meditative weightlessness with gentle body work/light massage or an actual In-Water Massage (30 minutes from $112). There’s also a Blue Lagoon Skincare line that can be purchased.

If you can’t get enough of the landscape but your skin’s starting to prune, you can head to Lava, a restaurant with large windows overlooking the lagoon, to dine on fresh, local Icelandic cuisine (in-robe dining is allowed until 4:00 p.m. daily). There’s also a café serving snacks and offering indoor dining.

The Cost: Rates start at $60 per person for the most basic soak, including a silica mud mask, towel and one drink; for $78 per person, you get two additional masks of your choice, a bathrobe to use, and a glass of sparkling wine if dining at Lava restaurant.

Sky Lagoon

Sky Lagoon
Just as beautiful in its own ways, Sky Lagoon offers the convenience of proximity to Reykjavik. Sky Lagoon

Since its March 2021 debut, Sky Lagoon has become a convenient alternative to the Blue Lagoon for relaxation-seekers wanting to enjoy a soothing soak that’s just minutes from central Reykjavik amid an ambience that, while not adults-only (kids age 12 and older are allowed if accompanied by someone age 18 and older), is decidedly less frenetic. In fact, Sky Lagoon’s vibe is closer to an oceanfront luxury resort pool and spa area than a tourist attraction, and while its artifice doesn’t detract from its soothing vibe and panoramic sea views, it doesn’t deliver the instantaneous wow factor of its world-famous competitor.

Location: Sky Lagoon overlooks the northern Atlantic within the Skerjaforour fjord at Karsnes Harbour, which is just a 15-minute drive from downtown Reykjavik. Its 230-foot-wide infinity-edged geothermal pool is naturally heated to about 100-104 Fahrenheit and offers sweeping views of the ocean along with Iceland’s unique volcanic landscape, including cone-shaped Mt. Keilir, on either side. The view is especially stunning at sunset, notably during summer when the sun skims the horizon but never truly sets. Opening hours vary by season, but Sky Lagoon is open 365 days a year.

History and Facts: Sky Lagoon may be modern, but its design took inspiration from ancient turf houses built by settlers to withstand the North Atlantic region’s harsh weather. The eye-catching building that houses the reception area, changing rooms, and a café rises from street level like a gentle hill, but it is actually constructed with tiles cut from swampy turf that have been stacked in a beautiful herringbone pattern. Both the lagoon and spa area were constructed with sustainability in mind and no single-use plastics are used.

infinity edge
The infinity edge makes for dazzling photography, in addition to the soothing experience. Sky Lagoon

The Experience: Once you enter through the striking reception area, head to the locker rooms; Sky Lagoon is wheelchair accessible (there’s a chairlift for entering the water) and also offers private changing facilities for guests who identify as non-binary or transsexual. A plastic wristband locks your locker (no robes or slippers are provided) and it’s just a short walk through the shower area (where you must shower) to a wade-in area with a gentle slope.

As you make your way through the canyon-like entry, you’ll be surrounded by man-made faux volcanic rock walls that are nonetheless realistic and totally photogenic. You will, however, notice that Sky Lagoon’s water (4.9 feet in depth at its deepest) is a darker, and ironically more down-to-Earth shade of blue-green because it lacks the reflective silica and other suspended minerals that give the Blue Lagoon its surreal hue. Still, the water’s soothing warmth and superb coastal scenery are a divine combination.

The entire infinity-edge lagoon is dotted with boulders and there’s a refreshing waterfall that makes a great photo-op. The most popular spot is the Lagoon Bar tucked into a cove and serving a selection of beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages, all at an additional cost of about $2.50 for a soft drink, $10 for a beer and $10-$20 for a glass of wine or champagne. There’s a limit of three alcoholic drinks per person and purchases are stored on your wristband and paid for when you exit the locker room.

With a Pure Pass admission (see pricing below), you can also enjoy the traditional and immersive 7-Step Sky Ritual. Emerging from the lagoon, you can opt to do a stimulating cold plunge (it’s icy!) before entering the spa area, where you’ll rewarm for about 10 minutes in a sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows offering sea views. Then it’s time to walk through a cold mist before applying a fragrant, tingle-inducing salt scrub all over your body and entering a steam room.

The final step is to shower off—and marvel at how incredibly soft and smooth your skin feels. Sky Lagoon’s credo is that taking time to relax and destress by nourishing your senses is a classic Icelandic tradition in keeping with the belief that “everything works out in the end.”

sky lagoon sauna
Following an icy plunge in the 7-Step Sky Ritual, guests will warm up and relax in the sauna, which features more phenomenal views. Sky Lagoon

The Amenities and Souvenirs: Once you change and exit the locker room, there’s a choice of two dining options: The Sky Café serves soups, sandwiches, and other Icelandic treats, while Smakk Bar offers five unique and seasonal Iceland tasting plates. Sky Lagoon also features a retail area that sells its signature body scrub, body lotion, and other products.

The Cost: To just enjoy a soak in Sky Lagoon, you can book a Pure Lite Pass for $57, but if you want to try the 7-Step Sky Ritual, you’ll need a Pure Pass that costs $71. Private changing facilities cost extra and can be enjoyed with the Sky Pass (at $99) and couples or platonic pairs can book Sky Lagoon for Two Sky Passes ($257 for two) that includes the lagoon, the 7-Step Ritual, a private changing area, one glass of wine or beer per person, and a Sky Platter from Smakk Bar.

Bottom Line: If you’ve never experienced the Blue Lagoon, a visit there should be a top priority. But if you’ve been there/done that and you’d love to try a geothermal journey that’s just minutes from Reykjavik, give Sky Lagoon a try. They each offer soothing submersion in two very different but incredibly scenic settings. And, if you have time, you can always book a soak at both.

Italy
Imagine eight amazing nights spent traveling throughout some of Italy’s most beautiful cities. Yes, please. Win VIP Holidays

The idea of winning a beautiful, luxurious villa in majestic Southern Italy is the stuff of dreams, but some of us just aren’t ready for the whole owning property overseas thing. Honestly, as amazing as it would be to win, it just sounds like a lot of extra work (spoken like a person who is admittedly still mad he didn’t win). But what about a magnificent 8-night getaway to Italy at an unbelievable fraction of the actual cost?

Now you’re speaking our language.

The same generous geniuses behind the “Win Houses in Italy” concept, which previously awarded one lucky so and so a renovated townhome in Pizzo Calabro, have launched the “Win VIP Holidays” effort with the same goal of making someone’s vacation dreams come true while generously benefitting The Children’s Society. And first on the docket is another Italian escape, just far less permanent.

For only $12, would-be travelers have a shot to win a getaway valued at approximately $36,000—I hope you didn’t just spit espresso all over your screen. Included in this epic experience is eight nights at various luxury hotels located in settings from “Florence to Lucca to Pisa, then Porto Venere to Santa Margherita and finally to Portofino.” Come si dice, “Yowzers”?

The winner will also receive €2,500 in spending money, a personal driver with executive car, return business class flights to Florence, and fully guided personal excursions, among other perks. If it seems too good to be true, just know that making it as unbelievable as possible is one of the goals, because a lot of people deserve an extraordinary gift right now.

“Millions of us always wonder what it is like to experience what the rich and famous do on holiday whether that’s staying in 5-star accommodation, being driven around by your own chauffeur or flying at the front of the plane in Business Class, now they can with this fantastic prize draw competition,” explained Jon Nurse, the founder of these creative brands. “COVID-19 has caused massive disruption for everyone these past couple of years and that has meant many haven’t enjoyed a vacation. Now, with the restrictions and rules being relaxed around the world, we’ve created Win VIP Holidays to give people the chance to win a holiday in places they’ve only ever dreamed about and to enjoy a break away.”

And, of course, the other goal is to give back to children in need, as The Children’s Society seeks to give kids the happiness they deserve. So, don’t be afraid to buy a couple extra tickets. The contest ends on August 29, 2022, so act fast.
